[Antibiotic therapy in ophthalmology].

Eye drops containing antibiotics are more and more numerous, we prescribe them more and more frequently. We found it interesting first to gather in six lists all antibiotics used locally in ophthalmology and to study for everyone its bacterial spectrum. After that we see which bacteria are most frequently met by ophthalmologists and when (presurgery examination, conjunctivitis, blepharitis, chalazion, meibomianitis, sty, corneal ulcer, lens infection). All this helps the ophthalmologist to choose the antibiotic he prescribes before the bacteriological specimen, with high confidence. At last, w

[Neisseria gonorrhoeae: an infrequent causal agent of periorbital cellulitis in a child].

Periorbital cellulitis is a very common disease in pediatric population, it describes an infection involving the adjacent soft tissues anterior to the orbital septum. Pathogens involved are generally Gram-positive cocci after introduction of Haemophilus influenzae vaccine. We report a case of Neisseria gonorrhoeae periorbital cellulitis associated with bacterial conjunctivitis in a child. There are few cases reported in the literature with this microorganism as the causal agent. With this case, we would like to emphasize the importance to do a culture of the ocular secretion (if it exists) bec

A pediculid case: autosensitization dermatitis caused by pediculosis capitis.

Pediculosis capitis is a worldwide infestation caused by Pediculus humanus capitis ectoparasite that only lives on the hairs of the scalp. As a result of severe itching excoriation, secondary bacterial infection, cervical and occipital lymphadenopathy are seen frequently where, sometimes bite reaction, viral exanthema mimicking hypersensitivity eruption and conjunctivitis may occur. Hereby, with the presentation of a quite rarely seen pediculid case, characterized with common autosensitization dermatitis as an -id reaction to pediculosis capitis, the importance of exploring the source of the i

[Corneal manifestations of measles in the unvaccinated adult: two typical cases during an epidemic].

Measles is a disease due to morbillivirus, which belongs to the paramyxoviridae subfamily. It affects mostly young patients, and evolves through four phases: incubation, invasion, eruption and desquamation. Ophthalmic manifestations may occur during the invasive and eruptive phases. Conjunctivitis is the most common ophthalmologic manifestation and is often asymptomatic. Measles keratitis is the most concerning manifestation, with possible corneal ulcer, bacterial superinfection and corneal perforation. We report two cases of acute keratitis occurring during the eruptive phase of measles in tw

Gentian violet keratoconjunctivitis.

A case of bilateral keratoconjunctivitis caused by self-instillation of a 1% aqueous solution of gentian violet was complicated by a secondary uveitis and gram-negative conjunctivitis. The patient was treated with cycloplegics and specific antibiotics and after resolution of the bacterial infection, a mild topical corticosteroid was used. After six months the patient had completely recovered from the keratitis, but bilateral corneal vascularization, had unilateral posterior synechiae, corneal scarring, and cataract formation were present. Cationic dyes such as gentian violet appear to be toxic

[Chlamydia trachomatis infection in the first year of life].

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (C. trachomatis) is the most frequent bacterial sexual infection in women. Pregnant women screening is controversial, with asymptomatic colonization occurring in 2-20%, and 40-70% newborns can be infected. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work is to characterise C. trachomatis infections in children under 12 months. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective study was carried out from January 1997 to December 2009 (13 years), on Chlamydia infections, diagnosed by immunofluorescence of ocular scraping or serum immunoglobulin M (IgM). Demographic, clinical features, imagi

A Case Report of Severe Corneal Toxicity following 0.5% Topical Moxifloxacin Use.

Moxifloxacin is a widely used topical antibiotic in various bacterial infections of the eye. Its safety and efficacy have been proved by many studies. We report a case of a rare adverse effect following its use. A 10-year-old female who had presented with acute bacterial conjunctivitis in both eyes with no corneal involvement was started on preservative-free 0.5% topical moxifloxacin four times a day. The child developed a severe form of corneal toxicity in both eyes with circumcorneal congestion and corneal edema following its use. The child's visual acuity had dropped from 20/20 to 20/400 in

Inadequately treated wastewater as a source of human enteric viruses in the environment.

Human enteric viruses are causative agents in both developed and developing countries of many non-bacterial gastrointestinal tract infections, respiratory tract infections, conjunctivitis, hepatitis and other more serious infections with high morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised individuals such as meningitis, encephalitis and paralysis. Human enteric viruses infect and replicate in the gastrointestinal tract of their hosts and are released in large quantities in the stools of infected individuals. The discharge of inadequately treated sewage effluents is the most common source of ente

CHANGES IN TISSUE TROPISM OF MYCOPLASMA GALLISEPTICUM FOLLOWING HOST JUMP.

Mycoplasma gallisepticum, a pathogen of worldwide economic importance in poultry, is recovered in chickens, especially from the respiratory tract. Some strains, however, are specialized to other tissues and because it jumps from poultry to wild birds, the new strains also cause severe conjunctivitis in new hosts. Nevertheless, most studies of M. gallisepticum in wild birds use choanal swabs or combine choanal and conjunctival swabs to quantify bacterial load. Because the clinical signs associated with M. gallisepticum infection differ markedly between poultry and House Finches (Haemorhous mexi

Feline chlamydia and calicivirus infections.

Feline conjunctivitis is common and often presents a clinical challenge to the veterinarian. Chlamydia psittaci is an important pathogen and should always be considered when evaluating cats with conjunctivitis. FCV is an infrequent cause of conjunctivitis and only causes the disease in conjunction with other clinical signs of this infection, such as oral mucosal ulcers and upper respiratory tract disease.

Small molecule control of bacterial biofilms.

Bacterial biofilms are defined as a surface attached community of bacteria embedded in a matrix of extracellular polymeric substances that they have produced. When in the biofilm state, bacteria are more resistant to antibiotics and the host immune response than are their planktonic counterparts. Biofilms are increasingly recognized as being significant in human disease, accounting for 80% of bacterial infections in the body and diseases associated with bacterial biofilms include: lung infections of cystic fibrosis patients, colitis, urethritis, conjunctivitis, otitis, endocarditis and periodo
