COVID-19 and the Nigerian correctional service: need for structured data.

Although prisoners are considered a vulnerable population, no data repository currently exists to monitor the COVID-19 incidence in Nigerian prisons. To better understand the impact of COVID-19 within the Nigerian prison system, prisons should develop detailed COVID-19 response protocols, implement enhanced point-of-care testing, and initiate contact tracing with meticulous data collection.

DNA transfer: review and implications for casework.

DNA-bearing cellular material can come to be present on a surface by either direct or indirect transfer. Direct transfer includes contact, but also includes activities within the vicinity of an item that may result in the transfer of DNA directly from an individual without any contact, such as speaking, coughing, and sneezing. Indirect transfer of DNA is when DNA from an individual comes to be on an item via an intermediary surface. It is important to consider indirect transfer in the evaluation of trace DNA in casework. The term 'trace DNA' in this review refers solely to DNA that cannot be a

Emergency response to a smallpox attack: the case for mass vaccination.

In the event of a smallpox bioterrorist attack in a large U.S. city, the interim response policy is to isolate symptomatic cases, trace and vaccinate their contacts, quarantine febrile contacts, but vaccinate more broadly if the outbreak cannot be contained by these measures. We embed this traced vaccination policy in a smallpox disease transmission model to estimate the number of cases and deaths that would result from an attack in a large urban area. Comparing the results to mass vaccination from the moment an attack is recognized, we find that mass vaccination results in both far fewer deat

Leaching of boron, arsenic and selenium from sedimentary rocks: I. Effects of contact time, mixing speed and liquid-to-solid ratio.

Sedimentary rocks of marine origin excavated in tunnel projects were recently identified as potentially hazardous because they could release significant amounts of toxic trace elements when exposed to the environment. This study investigated the leaching characteristics of B, As, Se and the major coexisting ions under various conditions to identify the factors and processes controlling their evolution in the leachate. In addition, we evaluated whether the parameters of the currently used leachability test for excavated rocks were adequate. Although the leachabilities of B, As and Se similarly

High rate of transmission among contacts in large London outbreak of isoniazid mono-resistant tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: For a continuing London outbreak of isoniazid mono-resistant tuberculosis (TB), we aimed to determine transmission rates and risk factors for contacts of early cases, in order to inform future guidance on contact tracing. METHODS: Paper-based proformas were completed by TB nurses, and then analysed using EpiInfo/SAS statistical software. RESULTS: Forty community contacts (11%) became cases, 45 (13%) were recommended chemoprophylaxis and 270 (76%) were discharged clear of infection. The highest transmission rate was among contacts exposed to two or more cases (29% became cases) an…

Do No Harm: A Review of Social Harms Associated with HIV Partner Notification.

INTRODUCTION: HIV partner notification services (PNS) are highly effective in identifying people living with HIV, but the complex risks and repercussions associated with HIV testing and disclosure must be examined. The benefits of assisting people to learn their HIV status and link with treatment or prevention based on their results must be considered alongside the risks of adverse events or social harms. METHODS: The study team systematically searched the PubMed, EBSCO, and Web of Science electronic databases (2015-2021), as well as abstracts from the International AIDS Society Conference (2

Approach to Managing Sex Partners of People with Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Partner management of sexually transmitted infection (STIs) is essential to identify and treat new cases, prevent reinfection in the index case, interrupt chains of transmission, reduce STI-related morbidity, and target STI screening and treatment interventions. The responsibility for partner notification and treatment falls on the health care provider. Approaches to partner management include patient referral, provider referral, contractual referral, and expedited partner therapy (EPT), with EPT and enhanced partner referral outperforming other methods. This article provides an overview of cl

Indirect Virus Transmission via Fomites Can Counteract Lock-Down Effectiveness.

The spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) has raised major health policy questions. Direct transmission via respiratory droplets seems to be the dominant route of its transmission. However, indirect transmission via shared contact of contaminated objects may also occur. The contribution of each transmission route to epidemic spread might change during lock-down scenarios. Here, we simulate viral spread of an abstract epidemic considering both routes of transmission by use of a stochastic, agent-based SEIR model. We show that efficient contact tracing (CT) at a …

Hospital Preparedness for COVID-19: The Known and The Known Unknown.

In late March 2020, we faced a nosocomial outbreak of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) at Keio University Hospital, Tokyo, Japan. Presently, COVID-19 is an unprecedented worldwide biohazard, and a nosocomial outbreak can occur in any hospital at any time. Therefore, we reviewed the literature regarding hospital preparedness, the initial management of COVID-19, and the surveillance of healthcare workers (HCWs) to find information that would be generally useful for physicians when confronted with COVID-19. In terms of hospital preparedness, each hospital should develop an incident manag

Evidence for airborne infectious disease transmission in public ground transport--a literature review.

While guidelines on contact tracing (CT) after exposure to certain infectious pathogens during air travel exist, no guidance documents are available on CT in response to potential exposure on public ground transport. We reviewed scientific and non-scientific literature on transmission of airborne pathogens in public ground transport and on factors potentially influencing transmission. We identified 32 relevant publications (15 scientific and 17 non-scientific). Most of the selected studies dealt with transmission of tuberculosis. However, the relation between travel duration, proximity to the …

[Chlamydia trachomatis].

Almost 11,000 cases of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) are diagnosed every year in Denmark. The most important epidemiologic factor is age under 25 years. The prevalence of CT among women applying for legal abortion is five to eight percent and in a recent study the prevalence of CT among second trimester pregnant women was found to be 2.9 percent. The consequences of CT-caused infections are many, including risk of infertility, ectopic pregnancies, perinatal transmission etc. The perinatal transmission rate is high in untreated cases of CT during pregnancy, but it can be prevented by treatment of
