Rectum migration of an intrauterine device.

Intrauterine device (IUD) is a well-accepted means of contraception. Although it is safe and effective, some serious complications may occur. It should be paid attention to a 45-year-old female admitted to the hospital for aggravated abdominal pain and dyspareunia for 2 months. She was found to have two IUDs in her body, one in the uterine cavity and the other outside. They were removed through laparoscopic and hysteroscopy. When IUD perforation occurs, whether symptomatic or not, surgical removal is necessary. Laparoscopy is thought to be the first choice. However, when serious adhesions coex

Factors associated with never-use of long-acting reversible contraception among adult reproductive-aged women in Ohio.

BACKGROUND: The number of women using long-acting reversible contraception (LARC)-intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants-is increasing and 14% of contraceptive users in the United States adopt LARC. We examined correlates of LARC never-use in a population-based survey of reproductive-aged women in Ohio. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2018-19 Ohio Survey of Women. We examined the prevalence of LARC never-use and reasons for never-use among ever users of contraception (N = 2388). Using Poisson regression to generate prevalence ratios (PRs), we examined associations between selected correl

Did COVID-19 Impact Contraceptive Uptake? Evidence from Senegal.

This study assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the number of new contraceptive acceptors in Senegal overall and by method. Monthly service data from March 2019 to December 2020 were extracted for the number of new contraceptive users of IUDs, implants, injectables, and oral contraceptive pills (OCPs). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and interrupted time series analysis for trend analyses overall and by the contraceptive method. Following the announcement of the first COVID-19 case in Senegal in March 2020, there was an immediate significant decrease in the number of

Medical aspects of contraception.

It is evident that choice of contraceptive has important medical implications, whether a mechanical or a hormonal method is elected. Each technology has unique benefits and risks, constraints, applicability, and inconvenience. Wise advice in a medical context must be based on thorough familiarity with the options available to each woman.

Contraception and ectopic pregnancy risk.

Studies of the association of ectopic pregnancy with contraception have generated a conflicting array of results because of methodologic differences between studies. We estimated the absolute incidence rates of ectopic pregnancy for various contraceptives by multiplying the pregnancy rate by the proportion of pregnancies with ectopic implantation for each method. Our results indicated a more than 500-fold difference in ectopic pregnancy incidence, from a low of 0.005 ectopic pregnancies per 1000 women years of oral contraception or vasectomy to a high of 2.6 per 1000 women years of no contrace

Desire for female sterilization among women wishing to limit births in rural Rakai, Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: Uganda has an unmet need for family planning of 34% and a total fertility rate of 6.2. We assessed the desire for female sterilization among sexually active women who wanted to stop childbearing in rural Rakai district, Uganda. STUDY DESIGN: 7192 sexually active women enrolled in a community cohort between 2002 and 2008 were asked about fertility intentions. Those stating that they did not want another child (limiters) were asked whether they would be willing to accept female sterilization, if available. Trends in desire for sterilization were determined by chi-square test for tren

ZB-06, a vaginal film containing an engineered human contraceptive antibody (HC4-N), demonstrates safety and efficacy in a phase 1 postcoital test and safety study.

BACKGROUND: With an unplanned pregnancy rate of 50% or more in many countries, there is an urgent need for contraceptives that are more accessible and acceptable. To meet the growing demand for new contraceptives, ZabBio developed ZB-06, a vaginal film containing HC4-N, a human contraceptive antibody that inactivates sperm. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the potential contraceptive activity of the ZB-06 film using a surrogate assessment for contraceptive efficacy, the postcoital test. We also assessed clinical safety of film use among healthy heterosexual couples. Serum, cervical mucus

Contraceptive preferences and adoption following female genital fistula surgery in Uganda: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Female genital fistula, largely caused by prolonged obstructed labour, is treated by surgical repair. Preventing pregnancy for a minimum period post-repair is recommended to ensure adequate healing and optimize post-repair outcomes. METHODS: We examined contraceptive preferences and use among Ugandan fistula patients (n = 60) in the year following genital fistula surgery using mixed-methods. Sexual activity, contraceptive use and pregnancy status were recorded quarterly for 12 months after surgery. In-depth interviews among purposively selected participants (n = 30) explored intim

Chlamydia and Gonorrhea Screening Among Women Aged 15-24 Years Undergoing a Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptive Insertion.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the receipt of chlamydia and gonorrhea screening among women aged 15-24 years undergoing long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) insertion. METHODS: We used the 2016-2017 MarketScan commercial claims data set to identify sexually active women aged 15-24 years with LARC insertion in 2017 and had ≥12 months of insurance coverage before the date of LARC insertion. Sexual activity (defined by Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set chlamydia testing measure) and LARC insertion, including intrauterine device (IUD) and implant insertion, were iden

[Abortifacient effect of hormonal contraceptives: a review].

Most of the scientific community, as well as in a sector of international Law, when referring to the unborn embryo, pregnancy must be defined as the period extending from implantation to natural birth. This implies some novelty, such as the redefinition of abortion as the elimination of the embryo only within this period, and the extension of contraception to any means that impedes the union of the gametes as a consequence of a sexual intercourse, or also that which eliminates the product of conception prior to its implantation. Therefore, the pharmaceutical industry markets, under the name of

Association Between Women's Use of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception and Declining Abortion Rates in New Zealand.

Background: To investigate the hypothesis that increased uptake of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) by women played a role in the declining abortion rates observed in New Zealand between 2008 and 2014. Materials and Methods: This quantitative ecological study analyzed routinely collected national data pertaining to abortion numbers, contraceptive prescriptions, and census population estimates for the period 2004-2014. Annual prescription and prevalence rates (per 1000 women) were calculated for short- and long-acting methods to investigate changes over time. Poisson's regression was

Tolerability of hormonal treatments in acute hepatic porphyria patients.

BACKGROUND: Acute hepatic porphyria (AHP) flares have been associated with female hormones and the use of hormonal treatments. Women with AHP are traditionally advised to avoid exogenous oestrogen and progesterone, limiting options for contraception and management of menorrhagia, dysmenorrhoea and menopausal symptoms. Evidence on specific hormonal therapies is limited; a 2003 study found that 25% of women with acute intermittent porphyria (AIP) experienced attacks with contraceptives containing progesterone, oestrogen or both. AIM: To update the current understanding of the tolerability of ho

Twelve-month discontinuation of etonogestrel implant in an outpatient pediatric setting.

OBJECTIVE: The etonogestrel (ENG) contraceptive implant is the most effective reversible contraceptive method. Uptake remains limited in adolescents, a population at high risk for unintended pregnancy. The objectives of this study were to determine the 12-month discontinuation rate of the ENG implant among adolescents in an outpatient setting and to characterize risk factors for discontinuation. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective chart review identified adolescent females aged 12 to 22years who received the ENG implant in one pediatric institution between January 1, 2011, and April 15, 2014.
