Bone marrow necrosis (BMN) is a relatively rare entity and has been associated with a poor prognosis. It is most commonly found in patients with neoplastic disorders, severe infections and sickle cell anemia. OBJECTIVE: To determine predictors of the occurrence of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in patients with early (< or = 1 yr) undifferentiated connective tissue disease (CTD).
METHODS: Analysis of a cohort of 213 patients with early undifferentiated CTD at entry, followed for 5 yrs at 11 tertiary centers. Baseline demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were compared using univariate and Cox multivariate regression analyses to identify possible predictive features for the subsequent occurrence of SLE.

A case of isoimmunisation in pregnancy caused by antibodies to the Kpa red blood cell antigen is described. The preceding pregnancy had resulted in fetal hydrops for which no cause was found as the antibody screening cells used to investigate the fetal hydrops were Kpa negative. This case emphasises the importance of serological screening at a reference laboratory for low frequency red cell antigens before a diagnosis of non-immune hydrops is made.

This study determined the prevalence and clinical significance of a positive direct antiglobulin test (DAT) observed in pretransfusion tests on red cells from patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
