In 2018, the Mexican Caribbean coast received a massive influx of pelagic Sargassum spp. that accumulated and decayed on beaches producing o … gae is left to decay on the beach in large volumes then deterioration in water quality could affect coral reefs close to shore. Furthermore, barriers placed in lagoons to intercept the Sargassum spp. before it reaches the beach could impact reef fauna if the algae is left to die and sink on site.

UNLABELLED: Coral gastrovascular cavities (GVCs) host diverse microorganisms and, as semi-closed compartments, are characterized by elevated nutrient concentrations and pronounced diel fluctuations in oxygen (O2) and pH. However, their broader chemical microenvironment and associated microbial activities remain poorly understood. Here, we provide direct evidence for active anaerobic metabolism in the GVC of Astraeosmilia curvata by measuring hydrogen (H2), nitric oxide (NO), and nitrous oxide (N2O) production, indicative of microbial fermentation and denitrification. Changes in GVC H2 concentr

Amphistegina are the most common foraminifers with algal endosymbionts found on reefs and carbonate shelves worldwide. Like zooxanthellate corals and other reef organisms with algal symbionts, Amphistegina respond to photoxidative stress by bleaching. This paper documents ultrastructural changes that occur during bleaching under field and laboratory conditions. Nine chambers from the outer whorl of each of 22 normal-appearing and 11 partly bleached specimens of Amphistegina gibbosa, which were collected from Conch Reef, Florida, USA, were examined using transmission electron microscopy. A deadly coral disease outbreak has been devastating the Florida Reef Tract since 2014. This disease, stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD), affects at least 22 coral species causing the progressive destruction of tissue. The etiological agents responsible for SCTLD are unidentified, but pathogenic bacteria are suspected. Virulence screens of 400 isolates identified four potentially pathogenic strains of Vibrio spp. subsequently identified as V. coralliilyticus. Strains of this species are known coral pathogens; however, cultures were unable to consistently elicit tissue loss, suggesting an

The crown-of-thorns starfish (Acanthaster planci) inhabits coral reefs, largely throughout the Indo-Pacific region. Its dorsal surface is covered with stout thorn-like spines. When handled or stepped on by humans, the spines can puncture the skin, causing an immediate painful reaction, followed by inflammation and possible infection. Initial pain and swelling may last for days. Effects of envenomation on the liver have been demonstrated previously in animal models, but hepatic toxicity has not previously been described in humans. We describe elevated liver enzymes in a 19-year-old female assoc…

The nutritional symbiosis between corals and their photosynthetic dinoflagellate partners underpins the ecological success of reef-building corals in nutrient-poor environments. Although coral holobionts can assimilate the abundant yet highly variable environmental nitrate, direct insight into how nitrate reductase is regulated in these symbiotic algae has been lacking. Here, nitrate reductase protein abundance and gene expression were characterized in cultured Symbiodiniaceae exposed to different nitrogen regimes and light conditions, revealing the multifactorial nature of its regulation. The

The coral Acropora spp., known for its reef-building abilities, is a simultaneous hermaphroditic broadcast spawning species. Acropora spp. release gametes into seawater, activating sperm motility. This activation is mediated by adenylyl cyclase (AC) and protein kinase A (PKA). Notably, membrane-permeable cAMP (8-bromo-cAMP) promotes sperm motility activation of Acropora florida. While the signal transduction for PKA-dependent motility activation is highly conserved among animals, the downstream signaling of PKA remains unclear. In this study, we used mass spectrometry (MS) analyses to identify

An increased abundance of macroalgae has been observed in coral reefs damaged by climate change and local environmental stressors. Macroalgae have a sublethal effect on corals that includes the inhibition of their growth, development, and reproduction. Thus, this study explored the effects of the macroalga, Caulerpa taxifolia, on the massive coral, Turbinaria peltata, under thermal stress. We compared the responses of the corals' water-meditated interaction with algae (the co-occurrence group) and those in direct contact with algae at two temperatures. The results show that after co-culturing …

Coral reef sea cucumbers are heavily exploited despite the precarious conservation status of many species, yet limited life-history knowledge constrains effective management. We used genetic mark-recapture to estimate longevity, mortality, and growth in the endangered, CITES-listed black teatfish Holothuria (Microthele) whitmaei by resampling a population after 24 years. Most individuals (60%) in 2024 were genetically identical to those sampled in 2000, indicating extremely low adult mortality (∼0.04 per year), a conservative mean lifespan of ∼24-27 years, and longevity exceeding 100 years. Nutrient exchanges promote the success of symbioses among reef-building corals, endosymbiotic dinoflagellates (Family: Symbiodiniaceae), and their microbial symbionts. Nutrient dynamics has considerable implications on the metabolism and proliferation of the coral holobiont, with nutrient limitation known to increase the susceptibility of corals to bleaching by disrupting the host-symbiont nutrient exchange. This study examines how two Symbiodiniaceae species, Symbiodinium microadriaticum RT 362 and Cladocopium goreaui RT 152, respond to varying iron (Fe) availability, nitrate (NO3 -), and amm

Large genome databases have markedly improved our understanding of marine microorganisms1-5. Although these resources have focused on prokaryotes, genomes from many dominant marine lineages, such as Pelagibacter and Prochlorococcus, are conspicuously underrepresented. Here we present the Great Barrier Reef Microbial Genomes Database (GBR-MGD), comprising 5,283 prokaryotic genomes obtained from Great Barrier Reef seawater samples using Nanopore and Illumina sequencing, including a collection of high-quality genomes of underrepresented groups. We show that standard short-read assemblies miss the

Artificial reefs (AR), which are integral tools for fish management, ecological reconciliation and restoration efforts, require non-polluting materials and intricate designs that mimic natural habitats. Despite their three-dimensional complexity, current designs nowadays rely on empirical methods that lack standardised pre-immersion assessment. To improve ecosystem integration, we propose to evaluate 3-dimensional Computer-aided Design (3D CAD) models using a method inspired by functional ecology principles. Based on existing metrics, we assess geometric (C-convexity, P-packing, D-fractal dime

We describe a new species of Bivesiculidae, Bivesiculoides maiae n. sp., from Hypoatherina tropicalis (Whitley) (Atherinidae) collected from off Heron Island (southern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia). Bivesiculoides maiae n. sp. is morphologically consistent with Bivesiculoides Yamaguti, 1938 in the entirely pre-testicular position of its uterus, and the possession of caeca and vitelline fields that extend posteriorly to level with the anterior extremity of the testis. The new species is morphologically distinct from the six known Bivesiculoides species in body size and shape, and s

Climate warming is causing rapid spatial expansion of ocean warm pools from equatorial latitudes towards the subtropics. Sedentary coral reef inhabitants in affected areas will thus be trapped in high temperature regimes, which may become the "new normal". In this study, we used clownfish Amphiprion ocellaris as model organism to study reef fish mechanisms of thermal adaptation and determine how high temperature affects multiple lipid aspects that influence physiology and thermal tolerance. We exposed juvenile fish to two different experimental conditions, implemented over 28 days: average tro

Increases in reported incidence of ciguatera fish poisoning (hereafter ciguatera) have been linked to warmer sea temperatures that are known to trigger coral bleaching events. The drivers that trigger blooms of ciguatera-causing dinoflagellates on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) are poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of increased temperatures and lowered salinities, often associated with environmental disturbance events, on the population growth of two strains of the potentially ciguatera-causing dinoflagellate, Gambierdiscus carpenteri (NQAIF116 and NQAIF380). Both strains we

The coastal hypersaline system of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) in the dry season, was investigated for the first time using a 3D baroclinic model. In the shallow coastal embayments, salinity increases to c.a. 1‰ above typical offshore salinity (~35.4‰). This salinity increase is due to high evaporation rates and negligible freshwater input. The hypersalinity drifts longshore north-westward due to south-easterly trade winds and may eventually pass capes or headlands, e.g. Cape Cleveland, where the water is considerably deeper (c.a. 15m). Here, a pronounced thermohaline circulation is predicted

There is a need to develop water quality thresholds for dredging near coral reefs that can relate physical pressures to biological responses and define exposure conditions above which effects could occur. Water quality characteristics during dredging have, however, not been well described. Using information from several major dredging projects, we describe sediment particle sizes in the water column/seabed, suspended sediment concentrations at different temporal scales during natural and dredging-related turbidity events, and changes in light quantity/quality underneath plumes. These condition…
