The journal of maternal-fetal & neonatal medicine : the official journal of the European Association of Perinatal Medicine, the Federation of Asia and Oceania Perinatal Societies, the International Society of Perinatal Obstetricians2019eng
Objectives: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of prenatal ultrasound to diagnose corpus callosum alterations, compared to prenatal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), postnatal image techniques (ultrasound and/or MRI), and post-mortem examination in terminated pregnancies. Methods: Retrospective review of 86 cases of prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of corpus callosum anomalies between January 2007 and December 2015 at a third level Maternal Fetal Medicine center. The study reviewed the findings of prenatal ultrasound and MRI, post-mortem examination in cases of terminati…

Resting state functional connectivity is defined in terms of temporal correlations between physiologic signals, most commonly studied using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Major features of functional connectivity correspond to structural (axonal) connectivity. However, this relation is not one-to-one. Interhemispheric functional connectivity in relation to the corpus callosum presents a case in point. Specifically, several reports have documented nearly intact interhemispheric functional connectivity in individuals in whom the corpus callosum (the major commissure between the hemispher…

PURPOSE: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of antenatal ultrasound and foetal magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) over the past decade in the diagnosis of anomalies of the corpus callosum in a tertiary referral centre.
METHODS: A single tertiary referral centre ultrasound database was searched for cases of suspected callosal anomalies between 2003 and 2012. All subsequent ultrasound scans, MRIs, neonatal imaging, postmortem investigations and birth records were reviewed. Callosal anomalies were classified into isolated or complex based on the presence or absence of accompanying congenital anoma…

Developmental absence (agenesis) of the corpus callosum (AgCC) is a common brain malformation that presents in isolation or in association with other conditions. Variability in aspects of neuropsychological functioning has been reported in small samples of individuals. This study aimed to systematically review the literature to characterize the profile and severity of cognitive impairments in individuals with AgCC across development. A mean general intellectual ability was calculated and neuropsychological functioning was qualitatively examined. We discuss methodological limitations of the lit…

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of cranial and spinal anomalies in spina bifida is well known. Although combinations of such anomalies are well recognized, coexistence of six different severe anomalies is extremely uncommon.
CASE REPORT: This case illustrates the association of the partial agenesis of the corpus callosum and complex spinal malformation, consisting of meningocele and dermoid sinus, associated with diastematomyelia, syringomyelia, and tethered spinal cord.
CONCLUSION: Coexistence of six different anomalies is very rare. To our knowledge, no previous cases have been reported in the…

We investigated the relationship between the morphology of the corpus callosum (CC) and IQ in a healthy sample of individuals in their late teens and early twenties. The relationship between the area of the CC, measured at the midline, and IQ showed regional differences. We observed that a higher estimated performance IQ was associated with smaller area in the posterior regions of the CC, a finding that differs from a positive association previously observed in a somewhat older adult sample. In contrast, higher estimated verbal IQ was associated with decreased fractional anisotropy of the genu…

Archival data from a survey of parent observations was used to determine the prevalence of social and behavioral problems in children with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC). Parent observations were surveyed using the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) for 61 children with ACC who were selected from the archive based on criteria of motor development suggesting a relatively high general level of functioning. Younger children with ACC (ages 2-5) were rated as primarily having problems with sleep. Older children with ACC (ages 6-11) manifested problems in attention, social function, thought, and…

We report on a female infant with a metaphyseal dysplasia and a neuronal migration abnormality consistent with a diagnosis of Sedaghatian spondylometaphyseal dysplasia. This child, born to nonconsanguineous Caucasian parents, was hypotonic from birth and experienced recurrent cyanotic episodes within a few hours of delivery. Cerebral imaging revealed absence of the corpus callosum and marked frontotemporal pachygyria. She developed seizures on day 14 of life and died at the age of 17 days. Our case highlights the possibility for neuronal migration abnormalities in Sedaghatian spondylometaphyse…

We describe a fetus with agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and Dandy-Walker malformation that developed a frontal paramidline cyst late in gestation. The interval appearance of the cyst occurred in concert with increasing size of the lateral ventricles, which supports the hypothesis that cysts associated with ACC can develop with increasing intraventricular pressure. Recognition of the potential for a changing appearance of neurologic abnormalities is important to providing appropriate patient counseling.

We report the reversible magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in a 2-year-old girl with acute cerebellitis. The high signal intensity in the cerebellum was obvious on diffusion-weighted images, and the splenium of the corpus callosum also showed high signal intensity on T2-weighted images and on diffusion-weighted images. The lesion in the splenium quickly returned to normal 72 hours later, whereas the hyperintensity in the cerebellum persisted for 1 week until clinical improvement was achieved. The findings in our patient suggested the particular vulnerability of the splenium of the corp…

OBJECTIVE: To review the embriology and clinical aspects of holoprosencephaly and agenesis of the corpus callosum.
DEVELOPMENT: The rostral neuropore closes at 24 days of gestation. At 74 days of gestations axons cross through the dorsal region of the commissural plaque and start forming the corpus callosum. At 115 days of gestations the corpus callosum reaches its adult form. Holoprosencephaly occurs due to rostral mesodermal dysfunction. The etiology of holoprosencephaly is heterogenous. The risk of holoprosencephaly of neonates born to mother with gestational diabetes is 1 2 %. Agenesis of…

Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum (OMIM 218000) is an autosomal recessive disease of early onset characterized by a delay in developmental milestones, a severe sensory-motor polyneuropathy with areflexia, a variable degree of agenesis of the corpus callosum, amyotrophy, hypotonia, and cognitive impairment. Although this disorder has rarely been reported worldwide, it has a high prevalence in the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean region of the province of Quebec (Canada) predominantly because of a founder effect. The gene defect responsible for this diso…

Three split-brained subjects, one with full forebrain commissurotomy and two with callosotomy, were impaired at judging whether pairs of lights in opposite visual fields were successive or simultaneous. This impairment did not vary with luminance when the lights were grey against a dark background, but was more pronounced when the lights were equiluminant with a yellow background. All three subjects were also better able to discriminate succession from simultaneity when the lights were both in the left visual field than when they were both in the right. A fourth subject with callosal agenesis
