Comparison of methylmercury accumulation in wheat and rice grown in straw-amended paddy soil.

Paddy soil is a key area of methylmercury (MeHg) production and is dominated by fluctuating redox conditions following rice plant growth or rice-wheat rotation planting in eastern and southern Asia. The role of organic matter in the formation of MeHg under these biogeochemical redox cycles remains poorly understood, especially in certain mercury (Hg)-contaminated paddy soils. Here, we provide a detailed understanding of the formation of MeHg and its accumulation in crops (i.e., wheat and rice) in rice-wheat rotation systems under straw return. Two series of experiments, pot and microcosm exper

Role of transgenic plants in agriculture and biopharming.

At present, environmental degradation and the consistently growing population are two main problems on the planet earth. Fulfilling the needs of this growing population is quite difficult from the limited arable land available on the globe. Although there are legal, social and political barriers to the utilization of biotechnology, advances in this field have substantially improved agriculture and human life to a great extent. One of the vital tools of biotechnology is genetic engineering (GE) which is used to modify plants, animals and microorganisms according to desired needs. In fact, genet

Fungal-mediated enhancement of yield and quality in Chrysanthemum morifolium under integrated rotation and organic management.

Continuous cropping obstacles (CCOs), driven by microbial dysbiosis, hinder sustainable Chrysanthemum morifolium production. While rotation and organic amendments are known to alleviate CCOs, their impact on microbial interactomes remains unclear. This study evaluated 10 agronomic treatments during a full cultivation cycle, ranging from monoculture (CK) to integrated rotation systems combined with bio-organic fertilizer or vermicompost (Rot_Org and Rot_Org_Ver), in a field with five-year continuous cropping history of Chrysanthemum morifolium. We integrated soil physicochemical analysis, enzym

Growth-regulating factors: conserved and divergent roles in plant growth and development and potential value for crop improvement.

High yield and stress resistance are the major prerequisites for successful crop cultivation, and can be achieved by modifying plant architecture. Evolutionarily conserved growth-regulating factors (GRFs) control the growth of different tissues and organs of plants. Here, we provide a systematic overview of the expression patterns of GRF genes and the structural features of GRF proteins in different plant species. Moreover, we illustrate the conserved and divergent roles of GRFs, microRNA396 (miR396), and GRF-interacting factors (GIFs) in leaf, root, and flower development. We also describe th

Volatilisation of pesticides under field conditions: inverse modelling and pesticide fate models.

BACKGROUND: A substantial fraction of the applied crop protection products on crops is lost to the atmosphere. Models describing the prediction of volatility and potential fate of these substances in the environment have become an important tool in the pesticide authorisation procedure at the EU level. The main topic of this research is to assess the rate and extent of volatilisation of ten pesticides after application on field crops. RESULTS: For eight of the ten pesticides, the volatilisation rates modelled with PEARL (Pesticide Emission Assessment at Regional and Local scales) corresponded

Microbiomes of soils and leafy vegetables in urban agriculture systems reflect crop management and local environmental conditions.

Soil and plant microbiomes influence crop quality and preharvest food safety, yet these processes have been largely unexplored in urban agriculture environments. Here, we investigated how the microbiota of soil and leafy greens (e.g., kale, lettuce, chard, and cabbage) interact with site-specific management practices and environmental conditions across seven urban agriculture sites in the greater Washington, DC, area. Samples of leaf tissue (n = 92), rhizosphere soil (n = 92), and "native" or bulk soil (n = 39) were collected and analyzed with 16S rRNA gene and ITS2 genomic region amplicon seq

Functions of Basic Helix-Loop-Helix (bHLH) Proteins in the Regulation of Plant Responses to Cold, Drought, Salt, and Iron Deficiency: A Comprehensive Review.

Abiotic stresses including cold, drought, salt, and iron deficiency severely impair plant development, crop productivity, and geographic distribution. Several bodies of research have shed light on the pleiotropic functions of BASIC HELIX-LOOP-HELIX (bHLH) proteins in plant responses to these abiotic stresses. In this review, we mention the regulatory roles of bHLH TFs in response to stresses such as cold, drought, salt resistance, and iron deficiency, as well as in enhancing grain yield in plants, especially crops. The bHLH proteins bind to E/G-box motifs in the target promoter and interact wi

Social amoeba farmers carry defensive symbionts to protect and privatize their crops.

Agricultural crops are investments that can be exploited by others. Farmer clones of the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum carry bacteria to seed out new food populations but they also carry other non-food bacteria such as Burkholderia spp. Here we demonstrate that these farmer-carried Burkholderia inhibit the growth of non-farmer D. discoideum clones that could exploit the farmers' crops. Using supernatants, we show that inhibition is due to molecules secreted by Burkholderia. When farmer and non-farmer amoebae are mixed together at various frequencies and allowed to complete the social

Effects of different crop intercropping on quality and rhizosphere soil microbial community of Erigeron breviscapus.

Obstacles for continuous cropping severely restrict the sustainable production of Erigeron breviscapus. To screen suitable intercropping crops and clarify their dual effects on plant growth, medicinal quality, rhizosphere nutrients, soil enzyme activity, and microbial communities, a pot experiment was conducted using 3-year continuously cropped soil, with monoculture as the control (CK) and four intercropping treatments: (A) Brassica juncea L., (B) corn, (C) purple garlic, and (D) broad bean. The results showed distinct crop-specific positive and negative effects of intercropping. On the posit

Sesame, an Underutilized Oil Seed Crop: Breeding Achievements and Future Challenges.

Sesame seeds and their edible oil are highly nutritious and rich in mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Bioactive compounds such as sterols, tocopherols, and sesamol provide significant medicinal benefits. The high oil content (50%) and favorable mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acid balance, as well as resilience to water stress, make sesame a promising candidate crop for global agricultural expansion. However, sesame production faces challenges such as low yields, poor response to agricultural inputs, and losses due to capsule dehiscence. To enhance yield, traits like determinate growth, d

Current Understandings on Magnesium Deficiency and Future Outlooks for Sustainable Agriculture.

The productivity of agricultural produce is fairly dependent on the availability of nutrients and efficient use. Magnesium (Mg2+) is an essential macronutrient of living cells and is the second most prevalent free divalent cation in plants. Mg2+ plays a role in several physiological processes that support plant growth and development. However, it has been largely forgotten in fertilization management strategies to increase crop production, which leads to severe reductions in plant growth and yield. In this review, we discuss how the Mg2+ shortage induces several responses in plants at differen…

Agricultural Use of Copper and Its Link to Alzheimer's Disease.

Copper is an essential nutrient for plants, animals, and humans because it is an indispensable component of several essential proteins and either lack or excess are harmful to human health. Recent studies revealed that the breakdown of the regulation of copper homeostasis could be associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common form of dementia. Copper accumulation occurs in human aging and is thought to increase the risk of AD for individuals with a susceptibility to copper exposure. This review reports that one of the leading causes of copper accumulation in the environment and the

Nitrogen dioxide treatment reduces the viability of seedborne Verticillium dahliae and the transmission of Peronospora effusa in spinach.

The global spinach (Spinacia oleracea) seed trade has contributed to the spread of plant pathogens such as Verticillium dahliae and Peronospora effusa. Verticillium dahliae causes Verticillium wilt in a broad range of crops, including lettuce (Lactuca sativa), strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa), and others. Verticillium wilt occurs only in the spinach seed production fields and is not observed in the spinach production fields as the crop is harvested well before symptom manifestation. In contrast, P. effusa exclusively infects spinach in production fields causing destructive downy mildew. Managi

Physiological Essence of Magnesium in Plants and Its Widespread Deficiency in the Farming System of China.

Magnesium (Mg) is an essential nutrient for a wide array of fundamental physiological and biochemical processes in plants. It largely involves chlorophyll synthesis, production, transportation, and utilization of photoassimilates, enzyme activation, and protein synthesis. As a multifaceted result of the introduction of high-yielding fertilizer-responsive cultivars, intensive cropping without replenishment of Mg, soil acidification, and exchangeable Mg (Ex-Mg) leaching, Mg has become a limiting nutrient for optimum crop production. However, little literature is available to better understand di…

In-season root-zone N management for mitigating greenhouse gas emission and reactive N losses in intensive wheat production.

Although both the grain yields and environmental costs of nitrogen (N) fertilization are gaining more public and scientific debate, the complex linkages among crop productivity, N application rate, environmental footprints, and the consequences of improved N management are not well understood. We considered the concept of linking greenhouse gas (GHG) emission, reactive N losses, and N fertilizer application rates with crop productivity to determine the response of the GHG emission and reactive N losses to N surplus and further evaluated the potential to reduce these N environmental footprints

Lipid accumulation and oxidative stress in the crop tissues of male and female pigeons during incubation and chick-rearing periods.

The current study aimed to evaluate the changes in lipid accumulation and oxidative status in pigeon crops during different breeding stages. Forty-two pairs of adult pigeons were randomly assigned to 7 groups. Lipid droplet accumulation in pigeon crops was visualized by using oil red O staining from d 17 of incubation (I17) to d 7 of chick rearing (R7). Transmission electron microscopy analysis showed swollen mitochondria with disintegration of cristae and typical characteristics of endoplasmic reticulum stress in crop tissues at R1 compared with those at I4. During the peak of pigeon milk for

Exaptation of ancestral cell-identity networks enables C4 photosynthesis.

C4 photosynthesis is used by the most productive plants on the planet, and compared with the ancestral C3 pathway, it confers a 50% increase in efficiency1. In more than 60 C4 lineages, CO2 fixation is compartmentalized between tissues, and bundle-sheath cells become photosynthetically activated2. How the bundle sheath acquires this alternate identity that allows efficient photosynthesis is unclear. Here we show that changes to bundle-sheath gene expression in C4 leaves are associated with the gain of a pre-existing cis-code found in the C3 leaf. From single-nucleus gene-expression and chromat

Targeted suppression of gibberellin biosynthetic genes ZmGA20ox3 and ZmGA20ox5 produces a short stature maize ideotype.

Maize is one of the world's most widely cultivated crops. As future demands for maize will continue to rise, fields will face ever more frequent and extreme weather patterns that directly affect crop productivity. Development of environmentally resilient crops with improved standability in the field, like wheat and rice, was enabled by shifting the architecture of plants to a short stature ideotype. However, such architectural change has not been implemented in maize due to the unique interactions between gibberellin (GA) and floral morphology which limited the use of the same type of mutation

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Copper Nanoparticles for the Control of Leaf Spot and Anthracnose Diseases of Olive.

Olive crop is frequently treated with copper fungicides to combat foliar and fruit diseases such as olive leaf spot caused by Fusicladium oleagineum and anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum spp. The replacement of copper-based products with more eco-friendly alternatives is a priority. Metal nanoparticles synthesized in several ways have recently revolutionized crop protection with applications against important crop pathogens. In this study, we present the development of four copper-based nanoparticles (CuNP Type 1 to 4) synthesized with a wet chemistry approach. The CuNPs were characterized
