Stochastic modeling of the Monkeypox 2022 epidemic with cross-infection hypothesis in a highly disturbed environment.

Monkeypox 2022, a new re-emerging disease, is caused by the Monkeypox virus. Structurally, this virus is related to the smallpox virus and infects the host in a similar way; however, the symptoms of Monkeypox are more severe. In this research work, a mathematical model for understanding the dynamics of Monkeypox 2022 is suggested that takes into account two modes of transmission: horizontal human dissemination and cross-infection between animals and humans. Due to lack of substantial knowledge about the virus diffusion and the effect of external perturbations, the model is extended to the prob

West Nile Virus Infection: A Cross-Sectional Study on Italian Medical Professionals during Summer Season 2022.

West Nile virus (WNV) has progressively endemized in large areas of continental Europe, and particularly in Northern Italy, in the Po River Valley. During summer season 2022, Italy experienced an unprecedented surge in incidence cases of WNV infections, including its main complications (West Nile fever (WNF) and West Nile neuroinvasive disease (WNND)). As knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of medical professionals may be instrumental in guaranteeing a prompt diagnosis and an accurate management of incident cases, we performed a cross-sectional study specifically on a sample of Italian m

Cross-Reactive T Cell Response Exists in Chronic Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis Virus Infection upon Pichinde Virus Challenge.

Immunological memory to a previously encountered pathogen can influence the outcome of a sequential infection, which is called heterologous immunity. Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) immune mice develop a NP205-specific T cell response that is cross-reactive to Pichinde virus infection (PICV). So far, limited data are available if cross-reactive T cell responses appear also during chronic infections with exhausted T cell responses. Exhaustion in chronic viral infections can be treated with checkpoint inhibitors, which might affect heterologous outcomes unexpectedly. The aim of this st

Strategies to identify hepatitis C virus infection in patients receiving anticancer therapy: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Optimal hepatitis C virus (HCV) screening strategies for cancer patients have not been established. We compared the performance of selective HCV screening strategies. METHODS: We surveyed patients presenting for first systemic anticancer therapy during 2013-2014 for HCV risk factors. We estimated the prevalence of positivity for HCV antibody (anti-HCV) and examined factors associated with anti-HCV status using Fisher's exact test or Student's t test. Sensitivity was calculated for screening patients born during 1945-1965, patients with ≥ 1 other risk factor, or both cohorts ("comb

Hookworm Infection among Pregnant Women at First Antenatal Visit in Lira, Uganda: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Hookworm infection in expectant mothers has adverse health effects on both the mothers and their unborn babies. Foetal effects are known to include intrauterine growth retardation and physical and mental growth retardation, while the mothers may develop anemia which could potentially result in death. Unfortunately, little is known about factors that may predispose a pregnant woman to infection by hookworm. In this study, we strived to determine not only the prevalence of hookworm infection among pregnant women attending their first antenatal visit during the current pregnancy in a

A Cross-Sectional Study of Caregiver Perceptions of Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection: Knowledge and Attitudes about Screening.

OBJECTIVES: To understand caregiver knowledge of and attitudes toward congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) testing in Utah. STUDY DESIGN: We surveyed 365 caregivers whose children were being seen in an otolaryngology clinic at a tertiary pediatric hospital about their knowledge of and attitudes toward cCMV and cCMV screening. Descriptive statistics and cluster analysis were used to examine their responses. RESULTS: The majority of caregivers were unsure how cCMV was spread, the symptoms of cCMV, and why cCMV screening of infants was important. Most caregivers did not know that cCMV screening wa

Repeated praziquantel treatment and Opisthorchis viverrini infection: a population-based cross-sectional study in northeast Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Opisthorchis viverrini infection is highly prevalent in northeast Thailand. This liver fluke is classified as a carcinogen due to its causal links with cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) development. Although treatment with praziquantel (PZQ) effectively cures O. viverrini infection, the prevalence remains high due to the traditional consumption of raw fish. Therefore, re-infection is common in the endemic community, leading to severe hepato-biliary morbidities including the fatal CCA. In this study, we evaluate the association between the frequency of previous PZQ treatment and current O. v

Borrelia miyamotoi infection leads to cross-reactive antibodies to the C6 peptide in mice and men.

OBJECTIVES: Borrelia miyamotoi is a relapsing fever Borrelia, transmitted by hard (Ixodes) ticks, which are also the main vector for Borrelia burgdorferi. A widely used test for serodiagnosis of Lyme borreliosis is an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) based on the C6 peptide of the B. burgdorferi sl VlsE protein. We set out to study C6 reactivity upon infection with B. miyamotoi in a large well-characterized set of B. miyamotoi disease (BMD) patient sera and in experimental murine infection. METHODS: We performed in silico analyses, comparing the C6-peptide to immunodominant B. miyamotoi variable larg

Febrile Neutropenia following Parvovirus B19 Infection and Cross Anti-Kell Reaction to E. Coli in Pregnancy.

Parvovirus B19 has tropism for red line blood cells, causing immune hydrops during pregnancy. A positive anti-Kell Coombs reaction usually happens during pregnancy when there is production of antibodies that target Kell antigens, but cross reactions to other antigens may occur. A 24-year-old Gypsy primigravida, 0 Rhesus positive, presented with persistent isolated hyperthermia for 2 weeks and a positive indirect Coombs test result with anti-Kell antibodies at routine tests. She had a 19-week live fetus. The blood tests revealed bicytopenia with iron deficiency anemia, leucopoenia with neutrope

Vaccination with MIP or Pgp3 induces cross-serovar protection against chlamydial genital tract infection in mice.

Previously we reported that recombinant Chlamydia muridarum macrophage infectivity potentiator (MIP) provided partial protection against C. muridarum genital tract infection in mice. On the other hand, Chlamydia trachomatis plasmid encoded Pgp3could induce the protection against C. muridarum air way infection. This study aimed to evaluate the immunogenicity of MIP and Pgp3 from C. trachomatis serovar D and further investigate whether MIP and Pgp3 provide cross-serovar protection against C. muridarum genital tract infection in mice. Our results showed that vaccination by any regimen, including

Intranasal co-administration of 1,8-cineole with influenza vaccine provide cross-protection against influenza virus infection.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination is the most efficient means for protection against influenza. However, the various vaccines have low efficacy to protect against pandemic strains because of antigenic drift and recombination of influenza virus. Adjuvant therapy is one of the attempts to improve influenza vaccine effective cross-protection against influenza virus infection. Our previous study confirmed that 1,8-cineole inhibits the NF-κB, reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines, and relieves the pathological changes of viral pneumonia in mice infected with influenza virus. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: 1,8-cineole, ad

Co-infection of blood borne viruses in blood donors: A cross-sectional study from North India.

BACKGROUND: There are several studies on prevalence of individual infectious disease markers (mono-infection) in donors but none on prevalence of coinfection. Co-infection is significant as it leads to accelerated disease progression. We, therefore, evaluated the prevalence of co-infection among blood donors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cross-sectional analysis was conducted in blood donors. All donors were tested for anti-HIV I and II, HBsAg, anti-HBC IgM, anti-HCV, Malaria and syphilis by chemiluminescence and ID-NAT assay. All reactive donor samples were confirmed by using confirmatory assa
