The value of cyst puncture in the differential diagnosis of benign ovarian tumours.

A prospective collection of serum samples and ovarian cyst fluid was used to assess the use of different tumour markers and cyst fluid cytology in combination with serum tumour markers for the differential diagnosis of benign ovarian cysts. A consecutive series of 108 women of median age 30 years (range 15-75) undergoing laparotomy or operative laparoscopy for presumedly benign ovarian cyst(s) were studied at a teaching hospital at the University of Milan, Italy. The main outcome measures were tumour markers CA 125, CA 19.9 and carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA) in serum and ovarian cyst fluid, o

Electrolyte and metabolite composition of cystic fluid from a rat model of ARPKD.

Fluid-filled cysts are the key feature of polycystic kidney disease, which eventually leads to renal failure. We analyzed the composition of cyst fluid from a rat model of autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease, the PCK rat, and identified sexual differences. Our results demonstrate that the ion composition of cyst fluid differs from that of urine or plasma. Untargeted metabolomics combined with transcriptomic data identified tryptophan metabolism, enzyme metabolism, steroid hormone biosynthesis, and fatty acid metabolism as pathways differing between male and female PCK rats. We quanti

ADPKD cell proliferation and Cl--dependent fluid secretion.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common genetic disorder characterized by bilateral fluid-filled cysts, renal inflammation and extensive fibrosis, leading to the progressive decline in kidney function. Renal cyst formation begins in utero from aberrant proliferation of tubule epithelial cells; however, the mechanisms for cystogenesis remain unclear. Cell proliferation and Cl--dependent fluid secretion, which drives the accumulation of cyst fluid, are responsible for inexorable growth of cysts and the remarkable appearance of massively enlarged ADPKD kidneys. Cyst infection in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease: penetration of meropenem into infected cysts.

BACKGROUND: Cyst infection is a common and serious complication of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) that is often refractory. Carbapenems are frequently needed to treat to patients with refractory cyst infection, but little is known about the penetration of newer water-soluble carbapenems into cysts. This study investigated the penetration of meropenem (MEPM) into infected cysts in patients with ADPKD. METHODS: Between August 2013 and January 2014, 10 ADPKD patients (14 infected cysts) receiving MEPM at Toranomon Hospital underwent drainage of infected cysts and definite c

Ouabain Regulates CFTR-Mediated Anion Secretion and Na,K-ATPase Transport in ADPKD Cells.

Cyst enlargement in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) requires the transepithelial secretion of fluid into the cyst lumen. We previously showed that physiological amounts of ouabain enhance cAMP-dependent fluid secretion and cyst growth of human ADPKD cyst epithelial cells in culture and formation of cyst-like dilations in metanephric kidneys from Pkd1 mutant mice. Here, we investigated the mechanisms by which ouabain promotes cAMP-dependent fluid secretion and cystogenesis. Ouabain (3 nM) enhanced cAMP-induced cyst-like dilations in embryonic kidneys from Pkd1 (m1Bei) mice,

[Aneurysmal cyst of uncommon site. Apropos of a case. Contribution of MRI].

An aneurysmal bone cyst of fourth metacarpal which occurred in a 7-year-old girl was explored by MRI. MRI findings such as fluid-fluid levels were compared to literature. These levels are inconstant and not pathognomonic of aneurysmal bone cyst. They could occur within others bone tumors. Even if fluid-fluid levels are highly suggestive of aneurysmal bone cyst only pathological study asserts the diagnosis. MRI procedure might be a good procedure for post surgery follow up.

Supratentorial arachnoid cysts in adults. A discussion of two cases from a pathophysiologic and surgical perspective.

Large congenital arachnoid cysts are a rare cause of increased intracranial pressure and progressive neurologic deficits in adult life. We describe two patients, diagnosed by computerized axial tomography and surgically treated. The pertinent medical literature was reviewed. The outer cyst membranes were excised, and a communication between cyst and subarachnoid space was established. When possible, the membranes and fluid content of these lesions should be studied. This fluid is best obtained by aspiration prior to dural incision. At present, three etiologic mechanisms of cyst enlargement app

Pretibial cyst formation after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with a hamstring tendon autograft.

We report a case of pretibial cyst formation, which is a rare complication, after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. The patient had undergone ACL reconstruction at age 18 and complained of pain and swelling localized on the anteromedial aspect of the ipsilateral proximal tibia 2 years postoperatively. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a multilocular fluid-filled cyst arising from the outlet of the tibial bone tunnel. Open resection of the cyst was performed and communication between the tibial tunnel and the joint space was confirmed arthroscopically. The cavity of the tibial tu

Risk for laparoscopic fenestration of liver cysts.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic fenestration is considered the best treatment for symptomatic simple liver cysts. Conversely, the laparoscopic approach for the management of hydatid simple liver cysts is not widely accepted because of the risk for severe complications. Despite improvement in imaging techniques, the probability of preoperatively mistaking a hydatid liver cyst for a simple liver cyst remains about 5%. Therefore, laparoscopic fenestration, planned for a liver cyst could be performed unintentionally for an undiagnosed hydatid liver cyst. METHODS: From January 2000 to January 2001, 15 pa

An evidence-based etiology study of synovial cyst of knee cruciate ligament: a real or pseudo-cyst.

PURPOSE: Synovial cyst of knee cruciate ligament (SCKCL) is a rare condition but can cause severe knee pain. The understanding of its etiology is relatively poor. This current study aimed to elucidate the pathogenesis of SCKCL based on a series of histo- and cytopathological examination. METHODS: Ten SCKCL patients who underwent arthroscopy were enrolled, among five patients claimed past knee injury. Hematoxylin & eosin staining was conducted to the cyst wall tissue sections and Papanicolaou staining to the cyst fluid smear. Prussian blue staining was employed to both the wall section and flu

[Inhibitors of intra-cystic secretion: novel therapies in ADPKD (Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease)].

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common inherited human renal disorder. Progressive enlargement of the kidneys is due to aberrant proliferation of the cyst epithelial cells, together with accumulation of fluid within the cyst cavities due to transepithelial fluid secretion. Multiple studies have suggested that fluid secretion across ADPKD cyst-lining cells is driven by the transepithelial secretion of chloride, mediated by the apical cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator chloride channel (CFTR) and specific basolateral transporters. Increased level

Pneumocystography as an aid in the diagnosis of cystic lesions of the breast.

Pneumocystography is used in Europe in managing breast cysts. This involves aspiration, air insufflation, and completion mammography. Pneumocystography allows accurate delineation of the cyst wall and contents. Pneumocystograms that do not demonstrate intracystic lesions negate the need for cyst excision in many cases. Microcalcifications may become visible after pneumocystography. Intracystic masses, positive cyst fluid cytology, bloody cyst fluid, cyst recurrence, or evidence of an extrinsic mass compressing the cyst are all indications for operation. Intracystic cancers can and do metastasi

Antigenic analysis of Cysticercus cellulosae by crossed immunoelectrophoresis & its role in immune diagnosis of neurocysticercosis.

The antigenic composition of Cysticercus cellulosae cysts excised from infected pig and autopsied human brain was analysed by crossed immunoelectrophoresis with an intermediate gel technique using rabbit hyperimmune serum. Normal pork muscle and human brain antigen were used to differentiate parasite derived components from that of host. Attempts were made to look for the rich source of parasitic immunodominant antigens by analysing preparations of different parts of cyst namely scolex and fluid using rabbit hyperimmune serum. Twenty three antigenic components were identified in sonicate extra

The Role of Markedly Elevated Cyst Carcinoembryonic Antigen in Risk-Stratifying Pancreatic Cysts.

INTRODUCTION: Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) level is currently being used in algorithms of commercially available pancreatic cyst fluid analysis platforms. However, the evidence to date on its role in risk stratification for mucinous lesions is heterogenous. We therefore sought to examine the relationship between the magnitude of CEA elevation and the structural and molecular properties of pancreatic cysts. METHODS: All patients who underwent pancreatic cyst fluid analysis at a single institution from 2012 to 2019 were retrospectively examined. Structural features on endoscopic ultrasound we

Lysophosphatidic acid is a modulator of cyst growth in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterized by the slow growth of multiple fluid-filled cysts predominately in the kidney tubules and liver bile ducts. Elucidation of mechanisms that control cyst growth will provide the basis for rational therapeutic intervention. We used electrophysiological methods to identify lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) as a component of cyst fluid and serum that stimulates secretory Cl- transport in the epithelial cell type that lines renal cysts. LPA effects are manifested through receptors located on the basolateral membrane of the epithelial ce
