Mapping assessment practices in DanceSport: a Human-In-The-Loop systematic review.

BACKGROUND: DanceSport is an aesthetic sport that combines athletic execution, artistic expression, musicality, and partner interaction. Although formal adjudication remains central to DanceSport competition, recent studies have increasingly explored technology-assisted approaches to provide more measurable and traceable evidence. However, the field lacks a focused synthesis explaining what major themes have emerged, how these themes have developed, what technologies have been applied, and how existing systems have been validated. METHODS: This study conducted a systematic review enhanced by

Plasmodium knowlesi: a superb in vivo nonhuman primate model of antigenic variation in malaria.

Antigenic variation in malaria was discovered in Plasmodium knowlesi studies involving longitudinal infections of rhesus macaques (M. mulatta). The variant proteins, known as the P. knowlesi Schizont Infected Cell Agglutination (SICA) antigens and the P. falciparum Erythrocyte Membrane Protein 1 (PfEMP1) antigens, expressed by the SICAvar and var multigene families, respectively, have been studied for over 30 years. Expression of the SICA antigens in P. knowlesi requires a splenic component, and specific antibodies are necessary for variant antigen switch events in vivo. Outstanding questions

Contrast-Attentive Thoracic Disease Recognition With Dual-Weighting Graph Reasoning.

Automatic thoracic disease diagnosis is a rising research topic in the medical imaging community, with many potential applications. However, the inconsistent appearances and high complexities of various lesions in chest X-rays currently hinder the development of a reliable and robust intelligent diagnosis system. Attending to the high-probability abnormal regions and exploiting the priori of a related knowledge graph offers one promising route to addressing these issues. As such, in this paper, we propose two contrastive abnormal attention models and a dual-weighting graph convolution to impro

Antimicrobial activity of zinc oxide particles on five micro-organisms of the Challenge Tests related to their physicochemical properties.

Zinc oxide is commonly used in pharmaceutical products to prevent or treat topical or systemic diseases owing to its antimicrobial properties, but it is scarcely used as preservative in topical formulations. The aim of this work was to investigate the antimicrobial activity of zinc oxide (ZnO) powders on the five microbial strains used for Challenge Tests in order to evaluate this inorganic compound as a preservative in topical formulation and assess relationships between the structural parameters of ZnO particles and their antimicrobial activity. For this purpose, the physicochemical characte

Calculation of test-retest variability in phase I/IIa clinical trials for Inherited Retinal Degenerations.

Background: Several novel treatments of inherited retinal degenerations have undergone phase I/IIa clinical trials with limited sample size, yet investigators must still determine if toxicity or an efficacy signal occurred or if the change was due to test-retest variability (TRV) of the measurement tool.Materials and Methods: Synthetic datasets were used to compare three types of TRV estimators under different sample sizes, mean drift, skewness, and number of baseline measurements. Results: Mixed effects models underestimated the standard deviation of measurement error (SDEM); the unbiased chan

Comparison of different feature extraction methods for applicable automated ICD coding.

BACKGROUND: Automated ICD coding on medical texts via machine learning has been a hot topic. Related studies from medical field heavily relies on conventional bag-of-words (BoW) as the feature extraction method, and do not commonly use more complicated methods, such as word2vec (W2V) and large pretrained models like BERT. This study aimed at uncovering the most effective feature extraction methods for coding models by comparing BoW, W2V and BERT variants. METHODS: We experimented with a Chinese dataset from Fuwai Hospital, which contains 6947 records and 1532 unique ICD codes, and a public Sp

Genetic analysis of the human microglial transcriptome across brain regions, aging and disease pathologies.

Microglia have emerged as important players in brain aging and pathology. To understand how genetic risk for neurological and psychiatric disorders is related to microglial function, large transcriptome studies are essential. Here we describe the transcriptome analysis of 255 primary human microglial samples isolated at autopsy from multiple brain regions of 100 individuals. We performed systematic analyses to investigate various aspects of microglial heterogeneities, including brain region and aging. We mapped expression and splicing quantitative trait loci and showed that many neurological d

Development of an internationally agreed minimal dataset for juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) for clinical and research use.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a rare autoimmune inflammatory disorder associated with significant morbidity and mortality. International collaboration is necessary to better understand the pathogenesis of the disease, response to treatment and long-term outcome. To aid international collaboration, it is essential to have a core set of data that all researchers and clinicians collect in a standardised way for clinical purposes and for research. This should include demographic details, diagnostic data and measures of disease activity, investigations and treatment. Variables in ex

Towards more precise automatic analysis: a systematic review of deep learning-based multi-organ segmentation.

Accurate segmentation of multiple organs in the head, neck, chest, and abdomen from medical images is an essential step in computer-aided diagnosis, surgical navigation, and radiation therapy. In the past few years, with a data-driven feature extraction approach and end-to-end training, automatic deep learning-based multi-organ segmentation methods have far outperformed traditional methods and become a new research topic. This review systematically summarizes the latest research in this field. We searched Google Scholar for papers published from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2023, using keyw

Expression of lactylation-related genes and their correlation with diabetic foot ulcer occurrence and immune infiltration.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) represent a severe complication of diabetes, often leading to chronic non-healing wounds and high amputation risk. Lactylation, a recently recognized post-translational modification driven by lactate metabolism, has emerged as a key regulator of immune response and gene expression. However, its role in DFU pathogenesis remains largely unexplored. This study aims to systematically investigate lactylation-related genes and their association with immune dysregulation in DFUs. METHODS: Transcriptomic data from three GEO datasets (GSE134431, GSE80178, GSE681

Epigenetic alterations in obstructive sleep Apnea: a pooled analysis of DNA methylation profiles in humans and animal models.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent sleep disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of intermittent hypoxia (IH) and sleep fragmentation. OSA is strongly associated with cardiometabolic morbidities, many of which correlate with the severity of IH. While the genetic basis of OSA remains unclear, epigenetic modifications, particularly DNA methylation, have emerged as key contributors to its pathophysiology. METHODS: In this pooled analysis, we systematically examined publicly available DNA methylation datasets from OSA patients and murine IH models to identify com

Tailored preoperative assessment in neonatal cardiac surgery: a European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association study†.

OBJECTIVES: Current preoperative counselling in neonatal cardiac surgery is mainly focused on the primary procedure. However, other factors must be considered when evaluating the surgical risk of a neonate. We aimed to develop a risk adjustment model to personalize preoperative counselling using data from the European Congenital Heart Surgeons Association Congenital Database (ECHSA-CD). METHODS: A retrospective, multicentre analysis of the ECHSA-CD dataset was conducted, including 20 687 neonates undergoing cardiac surgery between 2013 and 2022. A risk adjustment model was developed on a trai

Causality between coffee intake and bone health: A Mendelian randomization study.

Observational studies have reported associations between coffee intake and osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and osteoporosis (OP). However, it remains unknown whether these relationships are causal. In this study, we applied a 2-sample bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to comprehensively evaluate the causal association between coffee intake and OA, RA, and OP. Genetic data for OA (40,425 controls and 10,083 cases), RA (22,350 controls and 74,823 cases), OP (476,847 controls and 7751 cases), and coffee intake (263,464 Europeans) were obtained from the UK Biobank

Generation of a Free-Living Ground-Truth Validation Dataset for Wearable Measures of Physical Activity, Sedentary Behavior, Sleep, and Heart Rate in Adults (OxWEARS): Protocol for a Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Wearable devices enable continuous measurement of physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep, and heart rate under free-living conditions. However, most validation studies rely on small, homogeneous samples; are conducted under laboratory conditions; or lack gold standard ground-truth measurements, limiting the generalizability and accuracy of derived metrics. There is a pressing need for open-access, large-scale, free-living validation datasets that include multisensor data from diverse body locations and participant demographics to aid in model development. OBJECTIVE: The Oxfo

The Space-Time Organisation of Sleep Slow Oscillations as Potential Biomarker for Hypersomnolence.

Research suggests that the spatial profile of slow wave activity (SWA) could be altered in hypersomnolence. Slow oscillations (SOs; 0.5-1.5 Hz), single waveform events contributing to SWA, can be labelled as Global, Frontal, or Local depending on their presentation on the scalp. We showed that SO space-time types differentiate in their amplitudes, coordination with sleep spindles, and propagation patterns. This study applies our data-driven analysis to the nocturnal sleep of adults with and without hypersomnolence and major depressive disorder (MDD) to explore the potential relevance of SO spa

Associations among acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain, sleep duration, and C-reactive protein (CRP): A cross-sectional study of the UK biobank dataset.

Both musculoskeletal pain and sleep disturbances are major health problems worldwide. Literature suggests that the two are reciprocally related and both may be associated with changes in C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. However, the relationships among musculoskeletal pain, sleep duration, and CRP remain unclear. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the relationship between acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain, sleep, and inflammation using the data from the initial visit of the UK Biobank. 17,642 individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain, 11,962 individuals with acute musculos

A standardized approach for exact CT-based three-dimensional position analysis in the distal tibiofibular joint.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of tibiofibular reduction presents an intra- and postoperative challenge. Numerous two-dimensional measurement methods have been described, most of them highly dependent on leg orientation and rater. Aim of the present work was to develop a standardized and orientation-independent 3D based method for the assessment of syndesmotic joint position. METHODS: In a retrospective single center study, 3D models of bilateral ankle joints, either after unilateral syndesmosis stabilization (operative group) or with no injury (native group) were superimposed (best fit matching) and
