BACKGROUND: Acute evaluation and treatment of children presenting with dehydration represent one of the most common situation in the pediatric emergency department. To identify dehydration in infants and children before treatment, a number of symptoms and clinical signs have been evaluated. Hypernatremic dehydration in breast fed neonates is a rare but increasingly recognized problem. If not identified early, it may lead to potentially life threatening complications. The authors describe a neonate who developed thrombosis and lower limb ischemia secondary to hypernatremic dehydration. Peripheral gangrene, as a result of hypernatremic dehydration is extremely uncommon and has rarely been reported before.

We conducted a prospective study of 50 consecutive cases of children with gastroenteritis and dehydration to assess the correlation of alterations in the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration. Symptoms included 24 children with vomiting and 26 with vomiting and diarrhea. The effects of acute cellular or extracellular dehydration on milk intake via suckling were determined in rats 5, 10, 15, and 20 days of age. Milk was made available 10 times to each rat pup by the intravenous infusion of oxytocin to anesthetized test dams. The first of a series of epidemiological studies in progress in India has shown a strong association between risk of cataract and remembered episodes of dehydrational crises from severe cholera-like diarrhoeal disease. The findings suggest that severe diarrhoea is a major risk factor in early development of cataract and might account for about 36% of cases in the study area.

A striking network thought to consist of glycosaminoglycan in neonatal cartilage has recently been reported following glycol methacrylate (GMA) dehydration and embedding. This study attempted to learn why the network was not seen in other preparations previously reported. Comparative light and transmission electron microscopy of the network structures was carried out to determine their biological significance. We have shown the networks to be reproducible artefact, attained only following GMA dehydration of glutaraldehyde fixed neonatal cartilage.
