Enamel defects in the primary dentition of preterm and full-term children.

AIM: This study compared enamel defects in children born prematurely and at term. METHOD: 96 children born at term (G1), and with 96 children born prematurely (G2) were studied. RESULTS: A higher prevalence of enamel defects was found in the premature group, with a predominance of hypoplasia. In G1, 64 teeth displayed enamel defects (51 opacities and 13 hypoplasias). In G2, 110 defective teeth were found, (29 opacities and 81 hypoplasias). A significant correlation was found between very low birth weight (VLBW) and the presence of these defects (p < or = 0.001). The teeth most affected were

Giant cells mandibular lesion: surgical treatment with preservation of the dentition.

Giant cell tumors of the jaw (GCTJ) are common in the long bones but rare in the craniofacial region, with only 1% of cases occurring in the … f neoplasm and reconstruction of the mandible with an autologous bone graft of the iliac crest, but dentition was preserved over the resected area. No complications were detected, and 8 months postoperative control revealed excellent aesthetic and functional recuperation. This case is presented because of the following: (1) GCTJ is an infrequent tumor; (2) …

Distalization of the mandibular dentition of an adult with a skeletal Class III malocclusion.

This case report describes the orthodontic treatment of an 18-year-old woman with a skeletal Class III malocclusion and a midline deviation. The treatment plan consisted of distalizing the mandibular dentition asymmetrically and producing space for retraction of the mandibular anterior teeth. Short Class III elastics, an open-coil spring, and the mulitloop edgewise archwire technique were used, combining the entire maxillary dentition as integrated anchorage. The active treatment period was 26 months. Normal overbite and overjet were obtained, and facial balance was improved.

Regional differences within the dentition for plaque, gingivitis, and anaerobic bacteria.

OBJECTIVE: This investigation assessed regional differences in dental plaque and gingivitis within the human dentition in conjunction with microbiological analyses of dental plaque. METHODS: Forty-one adults (23 males and 18 females; age range 19-44 years) were enrolled, and a calibrated dental examiner completed whole mouth examinations for dental plaque (PI) and gingivitis (GI) using the Turesky modification of the Quigley-Hein Index (TMQH) and the L6e-Silness (LS) Index, respectively. Dental plaque samples were collected from the anterior surfaces and posterior teeth to determine viable an…

Treatment of a mutilated dentition with the mandibular protraction appliance: a patient report.

A 35-year-old female presented missing her maxillary right first premolar, left central and lateral incisors, and left second premolar and mandibular left first molar. The referring dentist had requested that only the maxillary left first molar be intruded to facilitate the prosthodontic replacement of the missing mandibular left first molar. After clinical examination and consultation with her dentist, it was decided to protract the mandibular left second and third molars, intrude the maxillary left first molar, replace the missing incisors with a temporary partial denture, and restore the mi

Orthodontic movement of a dilacerated maxillary incisor in mixed dentition treatment.

Dilaceration is a dental deformity characterized by an angulation between crown and root causing non-eruption of the tooth. It generally occurs following trauma to the deciduous dentition the apices of which lie close to the permanent tooth buds. Surgical extraction used to be the first choice in treating the severely dilacerated teeth. In this case report, it is described how a dilacerated central incisor was successfully moved into alignment in a young patient with proper surgical and orthodontic management avoiding use of prosthetic/implant devices. The panoramic radiograph after the trauma…

Treatment considerations for bleaching and bonding white lesions in the anterior dentition.

White lesions occur commonly on the anterior teeth. There are numerous reasons why these lesions appear in the anterior dentition, and these reasons will be discussed in detail. For some patients, these white lesions may be considered unsightly and the patients may seek treatment to have them removed; other patients are not concerned about their presence on their anterior teeth. Some of the white lesions are caused by demineralization and occur because of poor oral hygiene. For the purpose of this article, developmental white lesions will be discussed in detail, along with the options for trea…

Oral management of a child with mixed dentition affected by amelogenesis imperfecta.

Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI) is a hereditary developmental disorder affecting deposition, calcification or maturation of dental enamel in both the primary and permanent dentitions. Patients usually present tooth sensitivity as well as problems in chewing function and esthetics. In addition, dissatisfaction with the teeth appearance is often found, affecting the patient's social life. Oral rehabilitation of children with primary or mixed dentition is complex, since no definitive treatment can be done during periods of growth and until the end of eruption of the permanent dentition is accomplish…

Eruption of teeth in the nose following trauma to the primary and permanent dentitions.

Oro-facial trauma is common and forms a large component of any maxillofacial service workload. Even minor trauma can result in significant oro-facial and dental injury. This report reinforces the importance of a careful dental history and thorough examination, particularly when teeth remain missing after initial inspection. Other anatomical sites should be considered to ensure they do not contain traumatically displaced teeth. These two case reports show the late presentation of incisor teeth in the nasal cavity following dentoalveolar trauma.

Dental abnormalities in permanent dentition in children with submucous cleft palate.

Seventy-three children with submucous cleft palate (38 girls and 35 boys), mean age 8.2 years (range 7.7-9.5), were studied retrospectively from orthopantomograms. Dental abnormalities in permanent dentition were found in 26 patients (36%). Missing teeth, mainly lower 2nd premolars, upper lateral incisors, and upper 2nd premolars, were found in 12 patients (16%). Most of the patients had 1 or 2 missing teeth, 2 had 3 missing teeth. In 5 patients hypodontia was associated with another dental abnormality. Other dental abnormalities included peg-shaped lateral incisors in 7 patients (10%), ectopi…

Maxillary tooth size variation in dentitions with palatal canine displacement.

The association between the presence of palatally displaced maxillary canines (PDC) and other anomalies is well known, particularly with regard to the size and form of the lateral incisor. The present study investigated the connection between the maxillary canine anomaly and the existence of a reduction in the size of the other teeth in the maxilla in 58 consecutively treated patients (37 females, 21 males) aged 11-15 years, and compared these with a control group of 40 consecutively treated subjects (20 males, 20 females) with normally erupted maxillary canines. The findings indicate that the

While there was no significant correlation with reported pain experience, neural density in both dentitions increased significantly with caries. Analysis of these data suggests that caries-induced changes in neural density may be functionally more important in the regulation of pulpal inflammation and healing than in the processing and perception of dent …
