Postpartum Depression: Interacting Biological Pathways and the Promising Validation of Blood-Based Biomarkers.

Background/Objectives: Postpartum depression (PPD), the most common and prevalent psychiatric disorder after birth, is a prevalent yet underdiagnosed psychiatric condition that remains insufficiently understood, particularly in terms of its biological basis. While epidemiological data are extensive, few studies have systematically investigated their underlying biological mechanisms. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential links between blood biomarker levels and postpartum depressive symptoms, contributing to the development of a unified biological model of PPD. Methods: We cond

Edinburgh postpartum depression scores are associated with vaginal and gut microbiota in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal and postpartum depression may be influenced by the composition of host associated microbiomes. As such, the objective of this study was to elucidate the relationship between the human gut or vaginal microbiomes in pregnancy with prenatal or postpartum depression. METHODS: 140 female participants were recruited at their first prenatal visit and completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) to screen for depression and anxiety, in addition the EPDS was completed one month postpartum. Vaginal and stool biospecimens were collected in the third trimester, analyzed

Incidence and Predictors of Postpartum Depression Diagnoses among Active-Duty U.S. Army Soldiers.

Introduction: Understanding the incidence and predictors of postpartum depression (PPD) among active-duty service members is critical given the importance of this population and its unique stressors. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all active-duty U.S. Army soldiers with a record of at least one live-birth delivery between January 2012 and December 2013. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to estimate associations between demographic, health-related, and military-specific variables and diagnoses of PPD in the total population (N = 4,178) as well as in a subp

Causal effects of potential risk factors on postpartum depression: a Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a type of depressive episode related to parents after childbirth, which causes a variety of symptoms not only for parents but also affects the development of children. The causal relationship between potential risk factors and PPD remains comprehensively elucidated. METHODS: Linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) analysis was conducted to screen the heritability of each instrumental variant (IV) and to calculate the genetic correlations between effective causal factors and PPD. To search for the causal effect of multiple potential risk factor

Do postpartum insomnia, fatigue and depression affect the maternal role of primiparous women?

Many factors negatively affect the motherhood role. Fatigue, insomnia and depression, which are among these factors, have not been investigated together in any study. Therefore, we carried out this study to determine the effect of insomnia, fatigue and depressive symptoms on the motherhood role in primiparous mothers. In this descriptive and cross-sectional study, we included 153 women who met the inclusion criteria using the simple, random sampling method. To determine the independent variables affecting the motherhood role, we used the backward regression model. In this study, we determined

Childbirth Pain, Labor Epidural Analgesia, and Postpartum Depression: Recent Evidence and Future Directions.

Pregnancy and childbirth are major life events for women and their families, characterized by physical, psychological, and emotional changes that can trigger anxiety, depression, and mental disorders in susceptible individuals. Acute labor pain is an independent risk factor for persistent pain in the postpartum period and is associated with depressive disorders. Epidural analgesia is a well-established technique that has commonly been regarded as the gold standard in pain management during labor. Although the relationships between labor pain, labor epidural analgesia, and postpartum depression

Altered gray matter structural covariance networks in postpartum depression: a graph theoretical analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a serious postpartum mental health problem worldwide. To date, minimal is known about the alteration of topographical organization in the brain structural covariance network of patients with PPD. This study investigates the brain structural covariance networks of patients with PPD by using graph theoretical analysis. METHODS: High-resolution 3D T1 structural images were acquired from 21 drug-naive patients with PPD and 18 healthy postpartum women. Cortical thickness was extracted from 64 brain regions to construct the whole-brain structural covarianc

Seeking social support and postpartum depression: A pilot retrospective study of perceived changes.

UNLABELLED: Postpartum depression prevalence rates reach as high as 25% (Gavin, 2006). Negative effects on mothers and children are well established. Although low social support is an important predictor of perinatal depression (Leahy-Warren, McCarthy, and Corcoran, 2012), the value of peer group support remains equivocal and is examined in this pilot study. OBJECTIVE: Evaluations of interventions that focus on social support in real world settings for women experiencing PPD are lacking. In this pilot study we asked how perceived changes over time in three types of social support (significant

The association between body mass index and postpartum depression: A population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) reportedly affects between 6.5-19% of all new mothers. Identifying those at greatest risk for PPD has implications for prevention, early detection and intervention. While the relationship between extremes of body mass index (BMI) and depression has been frequently studied, the association between BMI and PPD is less understood. METHODS: Prospective cohort of all women with live singleton births in Sweden 1997-2008. We calculated the relative risk (RR) for PPD in relation to each woman's BMI and depression history. PPD diagnosis was based on a clinical d

Post-Up Study: Postpartum Depression Screening in Well-Child Care and Maternal Outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Postpartum depression often remains unaddressed. Screening in well-child care (WCC) may improve early detection, promote maternal recovery, and reduce effects on child development. We assessed the effectiveness of screening for postpartum depression in WCC compared with care as usual (CAU) on outcomes at mother and child levels. METHODS: In a prospective, quasiexperimental, comparative design, mothers visiting Dutch WCC centers were exposed either to screening at 1, 3, and 6 months postpartum (n = 1843) or to CAU (n = 1246). Assessments were at 3 weeks (baseline), 9 months (the Mi

Sociodemographic and clinical features of postpartum depression among Turkish women: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is moderate to severe depression in a woman after she has given birth. Findings from several well-designed studies reflect great variability in rates, from 10 to 22%, and also in risk factors for PPD. This variability may reflect geographical location. The incidence and risk factors for PPD among Turkish women are not well documented. It is, however, important to understand the risk factors to develop preventive intervention strategies. This study aims to examine the prevalence of PPD and associated risk factors among a sample of women receiving services
