Effects of pressure on contact dermatitis.

In human volunteers, firm pressure was applied to deformable plastic chambers containing chemical irritants, glass fibers, and selected allergens to which the subjects were sensitive. Pressure variably intensified irritant dermatitis and strikingly enhanced fiberglass dermatitis. Pressure did not influence allergic contact dermatitis. Pressure is one of several mechanical factors that can aggravate nonallergic contact dermatitis.

Contact Hypersensitivity as a Murine Model of Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) is an experimental model of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) that can be studied in mice. This study aims to present an objective laboratory method that may help to study the CHS reaction in mice, which can be measured and quantified by various tests. To induce CHS, on day "0", mice were sensitized on a previously shaved spot by abdominal skin painting with the hapten 2,4,6-trinitrochlorobenzene (TNCB) in an acetone-ethanol mixture, whereas negative control mice were sham sensitized with vehicle alone-acetone-ethanol mixture. On day "4", the baseline ear thickne

Association of contact urticaria and allergic contact dermatitis to rubber.

We present a case of a healthcare professional that developed type I and IV hypersensitivity reactions to rubber. During the clinical examination the patient showed eczematous dermatitis of the hands. The patch test was positive for thiuram group and an open test with a piece of glove was positive after 20 minutes of exposure. Allergen-specific IgE test (RAST) was relevant. Reactions to rubber allergens are frequent among healthcare professionals due to constant contact with this material.

Airborne Allergic Contact Dermatitis: Management and Responsible Allergens on the American Contact Dermatitis Society Core Series.

Airborne allergic contact dermatitis occurs when allergen particles suspended in the air deposit on the skin. Many allergens can result in an airborne distribution if presented in an aerosolized form. This review summarizes the allergens in the American Contact Dermatitis Society Core Allergen Series that have been documented to cause airborne allergic contact dermatitis. In addition to responsible allergens, this article also reviews management and treatment options.

Allergic contact dermatitis from transdermal estradiol and systemic contact dermatitis from oral estradiol. A case report.

BACKGROUND: About 20% of patients using transdermal estradiol complain of adverse local side effects. CASE: A 47-year-old, postmenopausal woman developed eczematous lesions at the sites of application of a estradiol therapeutic transdermal system and successively at the sites of application of a gel containing estradiol. Due to the topical intolerance, the therapy was switched to oral estrogen, which caused a systemic pruritic rash. Positive patch tests with estradiol led to the diagnosis of type IV allergic dermatitis due to transdermal estradiol and to a gel containing estradiol. Systemic c

Occupational contact dermatitis in a manicurist.

We report a case of a manicurist who developed an allergic skin reaction to acrylates, manifested by itchy erythema, papules, vesicles and fissures on her hands, fingertips, forearm and eyelids. Patch tests showed positive reactions to three nail products used: ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate in (meth)acrylate series. By using gel nail products, our patient became sensitized to 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. We assume that this had been the trigger, leading to the occurrence of cross-reactions between numerous acrylates incl

Allergic Contact Dermatitis of the Vulva.

Allergic contact dermatitis is an important diagnostic consideration in the evaluation of patients presenting with vulvar complaints. The high prevalence of contact sensitization in the vulvar region is likely multifactorial. We review the extant literature regarding key predisposing factors in the pathogenesis of vulvar allergic contact dermatitis, as well as the most commonly implicated allergens as identified by a number of retrospective studies and case series. On the basis of our findings, we provide diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations for practicing clinicians.

Atopic and Contact Dermatitis of the Vulva.

Pruritus, or itch, is a common vulvar complaint that is often treated empirically as a yeast infection; however, yeast infections are just one of the many conditions that can cause vulvar itch. Ignoring other conditions can prolong pruritus unnecessarily. Atopic dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis, and allergic contact dermatitis are extremely common noninfectious causes of vulvar itch that are often underdiagnosed by nondermatologists. Identifying these conditions and treating them appropriately can significantly improve a patient's quality of life and appropriately decrease health care e

Contact dermatitis in the cleaning industry.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The review summarizes recent findings on contact dermatitis in the cleaning industry. RECENT FINDINGS: Contact dermatitis is still an important issue in cleaning. Recent studies identified cleaning work sites and tasks, as well as specific cleaning products, which incur a risk increase for occupational contact dermatitis in cleaning. Workers involved in cleaning outdoors prevalence ratio [PR 1.85, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.16-2.96], cleaning common areas of residential buildings (PR 1.77, 95% CI 1.11-2.84), schools (PR 1.84, 95% CI 1.15-2.93) and cleaning building site

[Protein contact dermatitis in a butcher].

Protein contact dermatitis is a disease primarily seen in food handlers. The usual presenting finding is hand dermatitis. It is triggered by an IgE-mediated food sensitization, so that after local exposure T cells are recruited and cause the dermatitis. The diagnosis is based on history, clinical features and demonstration of IgE-dependent sensitization, which can also cause contact urticaria and even contact anaphylaxis. We report a case of PCD in a butcher, who could continue his work due to adequate diagnosis and management.

Diagnosis and management of contact dermatitis.

Contact dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin condition characterized by erythematous and pruritic skin lesions that occur after contact with a foreign substance. There are two forms of contact dermatitis: irritant and allergic. Irritant contact dermatitis is caused by the non-immune-modulated irritation of the skin by a substance, leading to skin changes. Allergic contact dermatitis is a delayed hypersensitivity reaction in which a foreign substance comes into contact with the skin; skin changes occur after reexposure to the substance. The most common substances that cause contact dermatit

Aging and contact dermatitis: a review.

As the population continues to age, understanding the differences between aged and young skin becomes more important to the clinician. Contact dermatitis is just one of the clinical entities that presents differently in the geriatric population. Reactions can be delayed in onset, and prolonged in duration. These altered presentations are the direct result of the pathophysiologic changes that occur in aging skin. It is especially important to recognize contact dermatitis in this age group, and to treat in a timely fashion.

Impact of regulation on contact dermatitis.

Contact dermatitis is a serious public health and dermatologic concern. The prevalence of contact dermatitis in the United States was estimated to be 13.6 per 1000 population according to the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey using physical examinations by dermatologists of a selected sample of Americans. The American Medical Care Survey estimated that for all American physicians dermatitis is the second most common dermatologic diagnosis proffered. It is essential that government, industry, and dermatologists work together to enhance regulatory methods to control and prevent

[Eczematous dermatitis: contact or/and atopy...].

The diagnosis of eczema and its etiology is mainly based on patient's history and meticulous clinical examination. The careful anamnesis should include all personal and familial signs of atopy and all patient's contacts mainly localised on the eczematous skin. Many investigations may help us to better understanding of this complex problem: blood examination (total IgE, Rast), prick-tests, epicutaneous or patch-tests (PT), semi-open tests (SOT) for potentially irritant products and repeated open application tests (ROAT) made by the patient himself. This tests will never be made systematically b

Contact dermatitis to foods and spices.

Cutaneous reactions to foods and spices occur in both the workplace and at home in those who grow, handle, prepare, or cook food. As spices are also used in cosmetics and perfumes other exposures are found. Several patterns have been described upon contact with food including irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, contact urticaria, phototoxic contact dermatitis, and protein contact dermatitis. The purpose of this article is to review the approach to a patient suspected of having a cutaneous reaction to food or spices, as well as discuss these reactions and the allergens tha…
