Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a rare and life-threatening condition characterized by the systemic manifestation of severe infection. It is caused by exotoxin-producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. Erythroderma, often described as generalized exfoliative dermatitis, is a rare and severe dermatological condition involving more than 90% of the body surface, identified as an uncommon cause of TSS. Here, we describe a case of a 72-year-old male who presented with signs and symptoms of erythroderma presenting as extensive erythematous scaling and lichenified plaques o

Erythroderma is a rare potentially deadly exfoliative dermatitis characterized by diffuse cutaneous erythema which may be associated with multi-organ dysfunction. Therefore, it is imperative to recognize and treat it promptly. Erythrodermic psoriasis is the most common form of erythroderma. Management of this condition is largely based on aggressive supportive care and the use of anti-inflammatory immunosuppressive and biologic agents. We describe a case of psoriatic erythroderma which was triggered by withdrawal from systemic steroids and successfully treated with apremilast and cyclosporine.

Phenytoin is a highly effective and widely prescribed anticonvulsant agent, but it can be associated with dose-related side effects and hypersensitivity reactions. We present a case of phenytoin-induced cholestatic hepatotoxicity in a 47-year-old woman who had exfoliative dermatitis, an increase in liver enzymes with a cholestatic pattern, and eosinophilia after 25 days of phenytoin therapy. The diagnostic workup showed no other possible causes, and the results of a percutaneous liver biopsy were consistent with drug-induced toxic hepatitis. Within 3 weeks after discontinuing phenytoin therapy

Twenty patients with extensive psoriasis of more than three years duration not responding to conventional medical treatment were studied to assess the effect of dialysis. Ten patients were subjected to haemodialysis and ten to peritoneal dialysis. Patients were periodically assessed regarding responses by standard critera. At the end of six months 4/8 (50%) in haemodialysis group and 6/10(60%) in peritoned dialysis group showed improvement. One patient in haemodialysis group developed exfoliative dermatitis eleven days after onset of dialysis. In this study though a beneficial effect in psoria

Anicteric hepatitis, associated with fever and exfoliative dermatitis, developed in a diabetic patient two weeks after intake of a long-acting sulfonylurea, chlorpropamide (Diabinese). Granulomas showing heavy infiltration with eosinophils were found in the liver and bone marrow. These were interpreted as manifestations of an allergic reaction. The clinical signs, abnormal laboratory findings, and hepatic lesions subsided spontaneously on withdrawal of the drug. Bone marrow changes, however, persisted seven months after cessation of the drug. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a pat

Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is an autoimmune blistering and erosive mucocutaneous disease associated with neoplasia. Clinical manifestations are polymorphous, and include erythema, bullae, erythema multiforme-like lesions and severe mucous membrane involvement. PNP manifesting as lichenoid dermatitis has recently been observed. We describe two Italian men with fatal PNP featuring typical PNP autoantigens associated with chronic B-cell lymphocytic leukaemia. The first patient presented with an extensive blistering eruption, several erythema multiforme-like lesions and severe mucosal involvem

Details of three patients who developed allergic responses to aminophylline are presented, together with data on such reactions compiled from reports submitted to the Committee on Safety of Medicines. Two of the patients developed generalised rashes within one day of starting treatment with oral aminophylline. Other symptoms included malaise and confusion. A third patient had severe generalised symptoms and a high fever, which was reproduced on challenge testing. Forty five of 147 reactions to aminophylline reported to the Committee on Safety of Medicines referred to dermatological or allergic

A retrospective study was conducted at the National Skin Centre (Singapore) for the period 1st January 1990 to 31st December 1990 to determine the pattern of skin disorders in the elderly. A total of 2,571 patients aged 65 years and above were studied. This constituted 6.4% (2,571/39,941) of patients seen at the Centre for that year. 38.1% of the elderly patients were aged 75 years or older. The male to female ratio was 1.3 to 1. There were differences in the pattern of skin problems when compared with the young. Xerosis and asteatotic eczema were distinctly common in the elderly. The most com

We observed a patient in whom large numbers of seborrheic keratoses developed in the course of a generalized dermatitis that progressed into an exfoliative erythroderma. A renal mass was finally discovered and was surgically excised. On microscopic examination, the kidney tumor proved to be a benign fibrous-walled, multilocular cyst. After removal of the renal cyst, the erythroderma and exfoliation subsided. A few months later, the seborrheic keratoses were noted to have become smaller, flatter, and fewer in number. Microscopic examination of five such involuting lesions showed, in each instan

Erythroderma is a dermatological emergency presenting with generalized erythema and scaling involving <90% of the body surface.1 There are various causes of erythroderma, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, phytophotodermatitis, pityriasis rubra pilaris, pemphigus foliaceus, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, and drug eruptions.2 However, erythroderma induced by dermatophytosis is encountered rarely. We, here, describe a case of erythroderma developed secondary to extensive dermatophytosis.

Kaposi varicelliform eruption (KVE) refers to an infectious skin disease that occurs after infection with herpes simplex virus,Coxsackie virus,or other viruses on the basis of preexisting skin diseases, commonly observed in the patients with eczema. It is rare for the patients with erythroderma to be complicated with KVE,and symptoms are often atypical, which pose a challenge to the diagnosis and treatment. This article reports a case of erythroderma complicated with KVE,aiming to raise awareness of clinicians in treating this disease.

Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDMS) is an inflammatory myopathy with various cutaneous manifestations, usually affecting children between 2 and 15 years of age. We describe a 9-year-old female diagnosed with Juvenile dermatomyositis presenting with generalized erythroderma, Gottron papules, inflammatory myopathy associated with systemic hypertension confirmed on histopathogical examination of skin and muscle biopsy. Since erythroderma, though rare, is an early manifestation of dermatomyositis (adult onset), presence in a pediatric case should prompt early investigations and effective management by
