Potential Applications of Chitosan in Seborrheic Dermatitis and Other Skin Diseases: A Comprehensive Review.

This review article explores the potential applications of chitosan, a natural polysaccharide derived from crustacean shells, in the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis (SD) and other skin diseases. SD is a common chronic inflammatory skin condition characterized by erythema, scaling, itching, and an oily appearance, predominantly affecting areas rich in sebaceous glands. Current treatments, including antifungal agents, corticosteroids, and calcineurin inhibitors, offer symptomatic relief but have limitations in long-term use due to side effects and resistance issues. Chitosan exhibits excellen

Global and Regional Burden of Seborrheic Dermatitis: Trends in Incidence and DALYs, 1990-2021.

BACKGROUND: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a prevalent chronic skin condition affecting areas rich in sebaceous glands, causing significant discomfort and psychological burden. Despite its impact, detailed global burden trends remain underexplored. METHODS: Data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study for SD from 1990 to 2021 were analyzed, examining incidence and Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs). Trends were assessed using the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC), and correlations between disease burden and socio-economic development indices (SDI) were evaluated. RESULTS: In

Sebaceous gland atrophy due to seborrheic dermatitis in a patient with alopecia: A potential pitfall.

Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory condition that usually presents with erythema, scaly greasy papules, and plaques affecting sebaceous gland-rich areas and predominantly involving the face and scalp. The diagnosis of seborrheic dermatitis can often be rendered based on the clinical presentation. However, in certain cases, a biopsy can be useful to distinguish it from clinical mimics such as psoriasis, discoid lupus, and rosacea. Prominent sebaceous gland atrophy without scarring has been well-described as an important and relatively specific clue for psoriatic or drug-induced alopecia.

Seborrheic Dermatitis as a Potential Trigger of Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia: A Review of Literature.

Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) is a common form of scarring alopecia that affects the crown or vertex of the scalp as centrifugally spreading patches of permanent hair loss. The etiology of CCCA is uncertain. Genetic predisposition, autoimmune diseases, infections (bacterial and fungal), and other idiopathic factors have all been explored as potential risk factors for the development of CCCA. Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) has been identified in a number of studies as the most common concurrent hair disorder seen in patients with CCCA. The high prevalence of SD in African American

Progressive Facial Papules in an African-American Patient: An Atypical Presentation of Seborrheic Dermatitis.

This case report highlights a unique variant of seborrheic dermatitis (SD) in a 30-year-old African-American woman with progressive facial papules. Four weeks of uninterrupted mild potency topical corticosteroid therapy produced marked improvement of signs and symptoms of biopsy-confirmed SD. SD mimicking cutaneous sarcoidosis is a unique treatment-responsive variant of SD that may be more likely to be encountered in African-American patients.

[Detection of red fluorescence in the facial skin of healthy individuals and patients with seborrheic dermatitis].

OBJECTIVE: To detect red fluorescence in the facial skin of healthy individuals and patients with seborrheic dermatitis (SD). METHOD: Skin analysis was performed to obtain the ultraviolet images of the facial skins of 61 healthy individuals and 64 SD patients, and the detection rate of red fluorescence was calculated. RESULTS: The detection rate of the red fluorescence was 36.06% in healthy individuals and 70.31% in SD patients (χ(2)=14.728, P<0.005). Additionally, it was significantly higher in T zone, where sebum secretion is high, than in U zone, where sebum secretion is lower (χ(2)=11.52

Clinical efficacies of topical agents for the treatment of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp: a comparative study.

Previous studies have shown that topical steroid and shampoo containing zinc pyrithione provide clinical benefits for treatment of scalp seborrheic dermatitis. But the clinical efficacy of topical tacrolimus, a newly developed calcineurin inhibitor on seborrheic dermatitis, is not well investigated yet. We wanted to compare the clinical efficacy of topical tacrolimus with that of conventional treatment (zinc pyrithione shampoo and topical betamethasone) for treatment of seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp. Patients with seborrheic dermatitis of the scalp were randomly allocated to receive topic

Prescribing practices for seborrheic dermatitis vary with the physician's specialty: implications for clinical practice.

The prescribing practices of different medical specialties (dermatology, family medicine, pediatrics and other) for seborrheic dermatitis were analyzed using the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS). The frequency of use of various antifungal and anti-inflammatory medications was found to differ greatly between specialties, with the greatest difference being seen between dermatologists (who frequently prescribe the antifungal ketoconazole) and non-dermatologists (who most frequently prescribe corticosteroids).
