A 14-year-old Trakehner gelding was evaluated for recurrent colic, with episodes occurring over 1 year. Signs were consistent with intermittent ascending colon obstruction and hematochezia. Necropsy examination revealed an ulcerated mass extending into the lumen of the right dorsal ascending colon. We present a new case of leiomyosarcoma, a very rare clinical entity, arising from the renal pelvis. The primary diagnosis, based on asymptomatic gross hematuria and imaging findings, was tumor of the left kidney. After a left radical nephro-ureterectomy, histology confirmed a leiomyosarcoma of the renal pelvis. No adjuvant treatment was provided and the patient remains healthy 3 years after surgery.

A unique case of primary myxoid liposarcoma of the thigh, in which focal pleomorphic areas were present containing rhabdomyoblasts, is described. Focal rhabdomyosarcoma in liposarcoma has only rarely been reported previously and only in dedifferentiated liposarcomas of the retroperitoneum. All but one have been recurrences with rhabdomyoblasts being absent in the primary liposarcoma. As rhabdomyoblasts were only focally present, the present case is regarded as liposarcoma with focal divergent rhabdomyoblastic differentiation rather than malignant mesenchymoma.

We present the first case of a vulvar leiomyoma studied by cytogenetics. The tumor formed a 3.0-cm periurethral nodule in a middle-aged woman and was positive for the muscle markers desmin and caldesmon, and for estrogen and progesterone receptors. Its karyotype was 46,XX,t(7;8)(p13;q11.2). This translocation has not been described in previously reported leiomyomas, regardless of their site of origin. The transcription factor PLAG1 gene at 8q12 was not altered by the translocation.

Sarcomatoid carcinomas (carcinosarcomas) are rare lesions in the gastrointestinal tract, where they are most commonly found in the esophagus. We present the first reported case of a sarcomatoid carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater. The tumor was composed of intermixed carcinomatous (adenocarcinoma plus squamous cell carcinoma) and sarcomatous elements. Cytokeratin immunoreactivity was demonstrated focally in the sarcomatoid component, although in other areas there was positive staining for desmin and smooth muscle actin. The possible histogenesis of such lesions is briefly discussed.

A case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the penis in a 56-year-old Hispanic man is described. The tumor was composed of a proliferation of atypical spindle cells showing the characteristic storiform growth pattern. Immunohistochemical stains were positive for vimentin and alpha-1-antichymotrypsin and negative for keratin, desmin, and S-100 protein antibodies. The unusual location of this tumor in our patient highlights the ubiquitous distribution of this malignant neoplasm. The clinical and histologic differential diagnosis of this lesion is discussed.
