PURPOSE: This study investigated the occurrence of vector-borne pathogens in free-living opossums (Didelphis albiventris and Didelphis aurita) from São Paulo State, Brazil, with emphasis on Babesia spp., Hepatozoon spp., and Ehrlichia spp.
METHODS: Blood samples from 115 opossums (95 D. albiventris and 20 D. aurita) were analyzed using parasitological and molecular approaches. A new leptospiral serotype in the serogroup Pyrogenes is described. The strain was isolated from one gray "four-eyed" opossum (Philander opossum). It is proposed that the serotype be designated guaratuba, strain An-7705. The isolations of serotypes ballum from the South American field mouse (Akodon arviculoides), szwajizak and icterohaemorrhagiae from the North American opossum (Didelphis marsupialis), and grippotyphosa from many other wild animal species as well as domesticated animals are also described.

A 13-year-old girl presented to the emergency department with a 5-day history of lower abdominal pain and dysuria that coincided with the onset of her last menstrual period. Menarche occurred 4 months previously and previous cycles were normal. The CAT scan of the abdomen and pelvis revealed a uterus didelphis with obstruction. Abdominal pain was due to hematocolpos and hematometra. The left hemivagina was distended with hematocolpos, and left renal agenesis was also noted. The vaginal septum was removed surgically without complications and she continued to be monitored closely.

BACKGROUND: Obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly (OHVIRA) is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by uterus didelphys, unilateral obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal anomaly.
CASE: Autopsy performed on a third trimester stillborn fetus unexpectedly revealed uterine didelphys, an obstructed left hemivagina, and a left pelvic, atrophic, duplex kidney, with both left ureters entering the obstructed left hemivagina. Furthermore, the fetus had an imperforate anus, a single right umbilical artery, and spina bifida occulta.
