Comparison of energy and protein intakes of older people consuming a texture modified diet with a normal hospital diet.

BACKGROUND: There are very few studies looking at the energy and protein requirements of patients requiring texture modified diets. Dysphagia is the main indication for people to be recommended texture-modified diets. Older people post-stroke are the key group in the hospital setting who consume this type of diet. The diets can be of several consistencies ranging from pureed to soft textures. OBJECTIVE: To compare the 24-hour dietary intake of older people consuming a texture modified diet in a clinical setting to older people consuming a normal hospital diet. METHOD: Weighed food intakes an…

[Adaptation of rats, after weaning, to a diet with a high concentration of lactose. I. Evaluation of water and diet ingestion].

Twelve female Wistar rats, weaned at 21 days, were allocated in two groups: Lactose Group composed by six rats receiving a normal laboratory diet added with 25 g of lactose for each 100 g of final mixture, and the Saccharose Group that was fed with the same diet but with the lactose being replaced by saccharose in the same proportion; both groups were studied for 28 days. The rats were weighed at the beginning of the experiment and on the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th days; the relative ingestion of water and diet was evaluated for each animal on the same days except for the first. During the obser…

Variations in the response of the thyroid gland of the rat to different low-iodine diets: correlation with iodine content of diet.

Large variations are frequently encountered in the thyroidal responses of rats to commercially available low-iodine diets. The major aim of this investigation was to attempt to correlate these variations with differences in the iodine content of the diets. A method was developed for measuring the iodine content of low-iodine diets which was sufficiently sensitive to discriminate between a diet containing 15-20 ng of iodine per g and one containing 30-40 ng of iodine per g. Large differences were observed between various commercial low-iodine diets in their ability to induce goiter and to affec…

Ferroptotic neurodegeneration and diet: a narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: The neuroprotective potential of various dietary interventions has emerged as a complementary approach to delay neurodegeneration. Ferroptosis, a mechanism of cell death, may be influenced by dietary interventions. Ferroptosis is driven by labile iron generating reactive oxygen species, resulting in lipid peroxidation and cellular death. Iron accumulates in the brain in various neurodegenerative disorders, and this correlates with disease progression. METHODS: We reviewed studies reporting effects of dietary interventions on brain iron accumulation and/or ferroptosis. RESULTS: …

Celiac Disease: Beyond Diet and Food Awareness.

Celiac disease is attributable to a combination of genetic predisposition and exposure to dietary gluten, with immune system involvement. The incidence is increasing globally, and the societal economic burden of celiac disease stretches beyond the cost of gluten-free food. This enteropathy that affects the small intestine has been related to different disorders and comorbidities. Thus, the implications of suffering from this disease are multidimensional and need further consideration. Celiac disease is a serious condition that remains under-recognized, resulting in an increased need for progra…

War, diet, and PTSD in Ukrainian youth.

The ongoing war in Ukraine has exposed young adults to sustained psychological stress, elevating their risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In a case-control study of 698 individuals, we investigated associations between PTSD, dietary patterns, disordered eating behaviours, and hematological parameters. PTSD was associated with greater adherence to restrictive diets-including ketogenic, low-fat, and intermittent fasting patterns-as well as higher scores for emotional, external, and uncontrolled eating. Conversely, adherence to a Mediterranean diet was associated with a red…

Lifestyle-Related Factors for Improving Diet Quality.

Background/Objectives: Diet quality is important for the prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which are now responsible for leading causes of death worldwide. Although health professionals often recommend diet improvement for the treatment and management of many NCDs, patients continually struggle to make dietary changes and maintain them long-term. This may be due to an interplay of many factors that affect dietary quality. This paper discusses some lifestyle-related factors that may offer additional points of intervention for health professionals to use to increase diet quality. M…

The Gluten-Free Diet for Celiac Disease.

A gluten-free diet (GFD) is the only treatment of celiac disease (CeD). A GFD is free from any food or substance with wheat, rye, and barley. CeD can be associated with micronutrient deficiencies including iron, folate, vitamin B12, vitamin D, zinc, and copper. Foods that are high in fat, added sugars, total calories are more often consumed, increasing the risk of obesity and a poor microbiome. There are psycho-social demands of a GFD including emotional burden, anxiety, social isolation, and relationship strain. People with CeD on a GFD should be monitored for nutrient deficiencies, other com…

Reprogramming neuroblastoma by diet-enhanced polyamine depletion.

Neuroblastoma is a highly lethal childhood tumour derived from differentiation-arrested neural crest cells1,2. Like all cancers, its growth is fuelled by metabolites obtained from either circulation or local biosynthesis3,4. Neuroblastomas depend on local polyamine biosynthesis, and the inhibitor difluoromethylornithine has shown clinical activity5. Here we show that such inhibition can be augmented by dietary restriction of upstream amino acid substrates, leading to disruption of oncogenic protein translation, tumour differentiation and profound survival gains in the Th-MYCN mouse model. Spec…

Diet and risk for acute tubulointerstitial nephritis.

Uncertainty exists regarding the association between diet and acute tubulointerstitial nephritis. Dietary factors served as exposures, including intake of alcohol, beef, non-oily fish, fresh fruit, oily fish, dried fruit, coffee, salad/raw vegetable, cereal, tea, water, salt, cooked vegetable, cheese, poultry, pork, Lamb/mutton, bread, and processed meat were extracted from the UK Biobank. Acute tubulointerstitial nephritis served as the outcome extracted from the FinnGen biobank. The 3 main methods of this analysis were weighted median, inverse-variance-weighted (IVW), and MR-Egger methods. T…

Celiac Disease, Gluten Sensitivity, and Diet Management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Celiac disease is a common chronic inflammatory condition of the small bowel triggered by gluten in wheat, rye and barley in the diet. Non-celiac gluten sensitivity presents with symptoms similar to celiac disease with the ingestion of gluten or other components of wheat. In this article, we review challenges presented by a gluten free diet for the treatment of both disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Wheat is ubiquitous in the diet and medications/products. A registered dietitian is mandatory for patient education on the gluten free diet. Naturally gluten free foods provide a heal…

Cardiovascular prevention: Mediterranean or low-fat diet?

The international scientific community has long agreed on the fact that a low-fat diet is actually able to bring benefits to cardiovascular health and beyond. By low-fat diet, experts mean a diet where the average calories assimilated daily are made up of no more than 30% fat. The Mediterranean Diet, on the other hand, identifies a nutritional model inspired by the traditional eating habits of the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It began to be studied scientifically in the 1950s and it is still today one of the diets that have a positive impact on our health when associated with cor…

Mediterranean Diet and Thyroid: An Interesting Alliance.

The Mediterranean diet, recognized as being cultural heritage by UNESCO, is mostly plant-based and includes a high consumption of whole-grain, fruit, and vegetables with a moderate consumption of alcohol during meals. Thus, it provides a small amount of saturated fatty acids and a high quantity of antioxidants and fiber. For this reason, it has been considered to have an important role in preventing cardiovascular diseases, chronic kidney diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and cancer, but its relationship with thyroid function and diseases is still under debate. The aim of this review was to …

Diet Quality and Health in Older Americans.

Adequate nutrition is an essential component of healthy ageing. This study documents the quality of diets among older Americans and implications of healthy eating for their physical and mental health. Using a nationally representative longitudinal sample of adults aged ≥50 years, from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) 2010−2016 and food intake data from the 2013 Health Care and Nutrition Study (HCNS), the study evaluates the onset of health problems along the spectrum of diet quality measured by the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015. Older adults adhering to healthier diets, in the high HEI …

Ketogenic Diet for Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy.

The prevalence of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a devastating neurological injury, is increasing; thus, effective treatments and preventions are urgently needed. The underlying pathology of HIE remains unclear; recent research has focused on elucidating key features of the disease. A variety of diseases can be alleviated by consuming a ketogenic diet (KD) despite differences in pathogenesis and features, given the common mechanisms of KD-induced effects. Dietary modification is the most translatable, cost-efficient, and safest approach to treat acute or chronic neurological d…
