Hematological and histopathological evaluation of meat-type quails fed Madagascar cockroach meal.

Aiming at the sustainability of meat production, insects can replace traditional ingredients in the diet of poultry. Studies evaluating performance in birds have emerged to ensure this ability, but few address the health parameters of animals. This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of the inclusion of Madagascar cockroach meal in traditional diets on hematological and histopathological traits of meat-type quails. The inclusion of Madagascar cockroach meal in the diet was evaluated in four levels: 0%, 6%, 12%, and 18%. Observations for hematological and histopathological traits from

New Software for Gluten-Free Diet Evaluation and Nutritional Education.

Following a gluten-free diet (GFD) is the only treatment for celiac disease. This diet must ensure the absence of gluten but also needs to be nutritionally balanced. Dietitians working in this field cannot properly evaluate energy and nutrient intake of celiac people because dietary programs available on the market do not contain the nutritional composition of gluten-free products (GFP). Here we present a new GFD evaluation software that contains more than 700 gluten-free rendered foodstuffs and their macronutrient composition. Apart from diet evaluation and design, the software represents a t

Eating pathology in adolescents with celiac disease.

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease (CD), treated by a gluten-free diet, may represent a nonspecific trigger for the development of eating pathology, particularly in adolescence. OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to perform a systematic study on eating pathology in CD. METHOD: CD patients were assessed for eating disorders by questionnaire, and body mass index was recorded. RESULTS: There was a higher rate of eating pathology in CD patients than would be expected, especially, a higher rate of bulimia nervosa. This subgroup reported more noncompliance with the gluten-free diet and had higher scores on mo

The effects on cow performance and calf birth and weaning weight of replacing grass silage with brewers grains in a barley straw diet offered to pregnant beef cows of two different breeds.

The effects on cow and calf performance of replacing grass silage with brewers grains in diets based on barley straw and fed to pregnant beef cows are reported. Using a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of breed and diet, cows pregnant by artificial insemination (n = 34) of two breeds (cross-bred Limousin, n = 19 and pure-bred Luing, n = 15) were fed diets ad libitum which consisted of either (g/kg dry matter) barley straw (664) and grass silage (325; GS) or barley straw (783) and brewers grains (206, BG) and offered as total mixed rations. From gestation day (GD) 168 until 266, individual daily fee

Growth performance of two Indian major carps, catla (Catla catla) and rohu (Labeo rohita) fed diets containing different levels of Spirulina platensis.

The influence of Spirulina platensis meal on the growth and carcass composition of two Indian major carps, catla, Catla catla and rohu, Labeo rohita was investigated in a 90-day culture trial. Four experimental diets were used and Spirulina replaced fish meal protein from the standard diet at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% levels. There was no significant difference in the final weight attained by catla at all levels of Spirulina incorporation as compared to the fish-meal-based control diet. However, the replacement of fish meal by more than 25% Spirulina resulted in significantly superior growth of r

The effects of the Multicultural Healthy Diet on cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease risk: a phase II randomized controlled trial in middle-aged adults.

BACKGROUND: Anti-inflammatory dietary patterns are associated with slower cognitive decline in older adults; however, little is known about the effects of an anti-inflammatory dietary pattern in middle age. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to adapt an anti-inflammatory diet to a multicultural setting and assess its impact on cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease risk and related dementias in healthy middle-aged adults. METHODS: We performed a phase II pilot randomized clinical trial in adults (40-65 y old; n = 290) in Bronx, New York. Participants were assigned to follow either the Multicultu

Effects of various diets on gastric tone in the proximal portion of the stomach of horses.

OBJECTIVE: To assess gastric tone in the proximal portion of the stomach in horses during and after ingestion of 4 diets (2 diets of grain and 2 diets of hay). ANIMALS: 6 adult horses. PROCEDURE: A polyester bag with a volume of approximately 1,600 ml was inserted through a gastric cannula into the proximal portion of the stomach of each horse. Internal pressure of the bag was maintained at 2 mm Hg by use of an electronic barostat, and changes in bag volume were recorded before, during, and after horses consumed diets of grain or hay. Each horse was fed 0.5 and 1.0 g of grain/kg and 0.5 and

Agreement between methods to assess potassium intake in patients with chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In the general population, 24-h urine potassium excretion is considered the reference standard for estimating potassium intake. However, its agreement with food records and spot urine collections in adults living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is not well-established. Given the risk of hyperkalemia related to changes in renal potassium handling, understanding if this reference standard is appropriate for the CKD population is important. This study aimed to compare agreement between methods for estimating potassium intake, using food records, 24-h urine measures, and spot

Quantitative aspects of the ruminating process in giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) fed with different diets.

Giraffes are ruminants feeding on fresh browse and twigs in the wild, but in zoos, their diet is mainly based on alfalfa hay, grains, and pellets occasionally supplemented by twigs and foliage. These diets, which differ in composition and digestibility, affect the behavior of the animals, tooth wear patterns, and chewing efficiency. We quantified several parameters of the rumination process in ten zoo housed giraffes of different sexes and ages fed either with alfalfa hay, fresh browse, or a combination of both. Chewing during rumination was highly ritualized and specimens showed an even distr

Cryptosporidiosis outbreak in a Nassau County, Florida, return travel group from Ireland, May 24, 2006-June 4, 2006.

The Nassau County Health Department (NCHD) in Florida investigated an outbreak of gastrointestinal (GI) illness in a returning choral group who toured Ireland from May 24 to June 4, 2006. The travel group, consisting predominantly of retirees, had performed at several churches and at a dinner theater in Ireland. The NCHD administered a telephone questionnaire to 40 of the 41 group members to examine possible water exposures; common meals; and food, travel, and clinical histories. The results of the questionnaire showed that 29 people met the case definition for the outbreak. Five stool samples

Use of fluoxetine for the treatment of stereotypical pacing behavior in a captive polar bear.

Stereotypical behaviors are common in captive animals, particularly captive polar bears. Effects of oral administration of fluoxetine on chronic stereotypical and typical behaviors in a captive polar bear were monitored. Fluoxetine treatment terminated stereotypic pacing behavior, facial tic, and huffing/coughing activity. The expression of typical polar bear behaviors was not affected by fluoxetine treatment, although the proportion of time spent engaged in typical behaviors changed during the course of the observation period. Response of the bear to fluoxetine treatment indicated that pharma

Acrylamide intake through diet and human cancer risk.

More than one-third of the calories consumed by U.S. and European populations contain acrylamide, a substance classified as a "probable human carcinogen" based on laboratory data. Thus, it is a public health concern to evaluate whether intake of acrylamide at levels found in the food supply is an important cancer risk factor. Mean dietary intake of acrylamide in adults averages 0.5 microg/kg of body weight per day, whereas intake is higher among children. Several epidemiological studies examining the relationship between dietary intake of acrylamide and cancers of the colon, rectum, kidney, bl

A low-acid diet rarely normalizes pathologic gastroesophageal reflux disease.

A 96-hour ambulatory pH testing is a practical tool for diagnosing gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and for concurrently evaluating two conditions: dietary variation and its effect on measured acid exposure time (AET) and reported symptoms. To date, it is unknown how consuming a diet of either low or high acidity can influence pathologic GERD. This study aimed to assess the effects of high- and low-acid diets on AET and the occurrence of laryngopharyngeal symptoms (LPS) during prolonged wireless pH monitoring. A retrospective review of 208 patients who underwent 96-hour wireless pH monit
