Older adults and online health misinformation: a systematic literature review.

As older adults increasingly rely on the internet for health-related information, concerns about their vulnerability to online health misinformation have intensified. This systematic literature review synthesizes findings from 26 empirical studies published between 2000 and 2024 to examine how older adults interact with health misinformation in digital contexts. The review identifies a complex interplay of factors contributing to their susceptibility, including cognitive decline, gaps in digital and health literacy, emotional and psychological influences, and the role of social relationships.

The 5G COVID-19 Digital Wildfire: An evolving network of Twitter contacts to explore phase transition metaphors in viral misinformation.

Shortly after the first COVID-19 cases became apparent in December 2019, rumors spread on social media suggesting a connection between the virus and the 5G radiation emanating from the recently deployed telecommunications network. In the course of the following weeks, this idea gained increasing popularity, and various alleged explanations for how such a connection manifests emerged. Ultimately, after being amplified by prominent conspiracy theorists, a series of arson attacks on telecommunication equipment followed, concluding with the kidnapping of telecommunication technicians in Peru. Reliable, neutral, and comprehensive, or their antithesis? A cross-sectional analysis of electroconvulsive therapy-related video quality across TikTok, BiliBili, and YouTube.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a well-established and effective treatment for several psychiatric disorders, however, stigma and misinformation surrounding ECT remain widespread. Social media has become a major source of health information for patients and may influence treatment perceptions and decision-making, yet the quality and reliability of ECT-related content vary substantially across platforms. This study aimed to evaluate the quality, reliability, and dissemination characteristics of ECT-related videos on TikTok, BiliBili, and YouTube, and to identify factors associate

Emotional Responses to Image-Based Sexual Harassment: Examining Help-Seeking and Changes in Social Media Behavior.

Image-based sexual harassment (IBSH), a form of technology-facilitated sexual violence, remains a growing concern for young women online. This study examined emotional responses, help-seeking, and social media behaviors among 400 undergraduate women (ages 18-22 years) who experienced IBSH, including cyberflashing, pressured sexting, image-related gaslighting about sharing intimate images, and repeated image-related cyberstalking or harassment. The most common emotions reported were disgust, shock, and feeling overwhelmed. Emotions such as embarrassment, anger, sadness, and anxiety were associa

Cognitive and affective dimensions of resistance to personalized social media advertising: An integrated framework of the persuasion knowledge model and psychological reactance theory.

As personalized advertising becomes increasingly prevalent on social media, understanding why informed consumers resist such messages is essential. This study integrates the Persuasion Knowledge Model (PKM) and Psychological Reactance Theory (PRT) to examine the relationships among persuasion knowledge, ad skepticism, perceived intrusiveness, and consumers' avoidance of personalized advertising. Using survey data from 977 social media users in Pakistan and analyzed through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), results reveal that persuasion knowledge is positively associated with ad skepticism (

Data talk: Mapping older Canadians' understandings of digital technologies and their data.

Older adults' experiences with technologies and data are typically flattened amid a focus on the functionalities of "techno-fixes" for the "afflictions" of later life. In this paper, we challenge this narrow focus by presenting older adults' own understandings of and experiences with data. Reporting on an online qualitative survey with 70 older Canadians, we argue that rather than being passive agents amid datafication, older adults are agentively theorizing, tinkering with, and engaging with data and devices. Organizing our analysis around three thematic threads (data associations, affordance

Developing Digital Platforms to Help Older Adults Stay Physically and Socially Active: Co-Design Study to Develop a Toolkit and Evaluate Its Impact.

BACKGROUND: Digital technologies have the potential to support physical, cognitive, and social activity among older adults, but many small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) lack the resources to conduct meaningful co-design with older adults. Toolkits derived from rigorous co-design processes may offer a scalable mechanism for translating end-user priorities into real-world product development. OBJECTIVE: The Generating Older Active Lives Digitally study aimed primarily to engage older adults in a co-design process to identify priorities for digital technologies that support physical activ

Naturalistic Online Language as a Marker of Depression in Midlife and Older Adults: Computational Text Analysis of Bluesky and Reddit Posts.

BACKGROUND: Social media use among older adults continues to grow. Many people use social media to establish meaningful social ties and discuss their mental health. Depression in midlife and older adults is a critical public health concern, yet scalable, sensitive methods for early detection remain limited. Natural language processing offers new opportunities to examine sentiment and mental health through online language in typically understudied populations. OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether sentiment and cognitive features of naturalistic social media language are associated with depre

A cross-sectional analysis of the quality and characteristics of sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome videos on YouTube, Bilibili, and TikTok.

Sleep Apnea Hypopnea Syndrome (SAHS) is a prevalent sleep disorder associated with substantial health risks, highlighting the need for improved public awareness. This cross-sectional analysis systematically evaluated the quality of SAHS-related videos on YouTube, Bilibili, and TikTok. Of 903 videos initially identified, 227 met the inclusion criteria for analysis. Cross-platform comparisons revealed that long-form platforms hosted higher-quality content, whereas short-form platforms generated greater engagement despite lower informational integrity. This study reveals a structural disconnect b

Finding Community and Losing the Plot: Social Media, Healthcare, and Patient Experience.

This commentary examines 12 first-person narratives of sharing health information on social media. Online storytelling simultaneously offers vital support and imposes concerning pressures. The authors describe how digital platforms mitigate isolation by fostering community, solidarity, and practical "community-driven knowledge," particularly around stigmatized conditions, disability, and reproductive health. Across many of the authors' narratives, we see that peer networks can supplement clinical care by providing expertise that shapes treatment decisions and offers support. At the same time,

Living for the 'gram: analysing the online footprint of lupus using a qualitative social media listening tool.

OBJECTIVES: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) significantly impacts patients' lives beyond the traditionally chased outcomes of mortality and organ damage. Increased access to social media has aided health information dissemination, but a gap remains between patient and physician perspectives. This study explores the online trends on SLE to identify the overall theme of community engagement. METHODS: An online social listening tool (Brand24) was utilised by two rheumatologists in this cross-sectional study to search for keywords related to lupus and diabetes. Data on reach, engagement, theme
