PURPOSE: Local recurrence of rectal cancer after curative surgery appears in 5 to 30 percent of all cases. It is necessary to detect local recurrence in a resectable stage to have an opportunity for curative reintervention or palliative prevention of those symptoms. Because most local recurrences occur extraluminally, conventional follow-up fails to detect them at an early stage. Therefore, a prospective study was performed to assess the diagnostic potential of endorectal and endovaginal ultrasound to detect asymptomatic resectable local recurrence.

PURPOSE: This prospective, multicenter study was initiated to evaluate the diagnostic performance of PSA, free/total PSA (f/tPSA) and complexed PSA (cPSA) with volume-based parameters for early detection of prostate cancer in patients with PSA between 2.5 and 20 ng/ml.

In a study of the familial risk of prostate cancer 17 sets of 2 brothers with prostate cancer were identified. Digital rectal examination, measurement of prostatic-specific antigen, and transrectal ultrasound, with or without prostate biopsy, are the urologist's primary tools for diagnosing carcinoma of the prostate. However, in the patient who has previously undergone abdominoperineal resection of the rectum such procedures are not possible. We therefore describe a simple, cost-effective method for evaluating the prostate in the patient without a rectum, via transperineal ultrasound and prostate biopsy. This procedure provides the urologist with a solution to a heretofore difficult problem.
