Parent Attitude Research Instrument (PARI): clinical vs. statistical inferences in understanding abusive mothers.

Attitudes toward child rearing and early experiences in childhood traditionally have been regarded as psychodynamic factors that influence adult behavior. The present study assessed the capacity of the Parent Attitude Research Instrument (PARI) to differentiate between court-identified abusive mothers and a control sample of nonabusive, well-baby clinic mothers of comparable socioeconomic status. While univariate t-tests showed statistical significance for 3 of the 23 PARI scales, more sophisticated and appropriate multivariate tests (Discriminant Function Analysis) demonstrated that the PARI

Supporting nursing students with dyslexia.

Dyslexia is characterised by difficulties with the accuracy and/or speed of word reading and spelling. Nursing students with dyslexia can experience challenges with assessment methods and learning resources, clinical placements and their emotional and psychological well-being. The decision to disclose dyslexia can be fraught with fear of discrimination or stigmatisation, but disclosure is essential for accessing reasonable adjustments, such as extended time for exams and assistive technologies. This article explores the challenges experienced by nursing students with dyslexia and the strategie

The Psychological Maltreatment Rating Scales.

Psychological maltreatment is gaining recognition as one of the core concepts in child welfare, however, its utility has been limited by definitional problems and the absence of operationalized and validated instruments. These Psychological Maltreatment Rating Scales (PMRS) were developed for assessing psychological maltreatment in mother-child interaction, and were used to rate the videotaped interaction of 49 high-risk mother-child dyads and make predictions of child protective service involvement with the dyads. These predictions are compared with predictions based upon mothers' personal re

Personality, emotion regulation, and age-based discrimination: implications for wellbeing in older adulthood.

METHODS: We sought to examine whether the negative associations between the two facets of ageism (internalized ageism and ageist discrimination) and psychological wellbeing are moderated by individual differences in personality, emotion regulation strategy use, and difficulties with strategy use in two cross-sectional studies. RESULTS: Findings suggested that age-based discrimination and internalized ageism are associated with lower wellbeing. Extraversion, neuroticism, response modulation strategies, and difficulties with emotion regulation did not moderate ageism-wellbeing associations. How

Racial Discrimination and Resting-State Functional Connectivity of Salience Network Nodes in Trauma-Exposed Black Adults in the United States.

IMPORTANCE: For Black US residents, experiences of racial discrimination are still pervasive and frequent. Recent empirical work has amplified the lived experiences and narratives of Black people and further documented the detrimental effects of racial discrimination on both mental and physical health; however, there is still a need for further research to uncover the mechanisms connecting experiences of racial discrimination with adverse health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To examine neurobiological mechanisms that may offer novel insight into the association of racial discrimination with adverse he

Using structural equation modeling to assess pathways between structural stigma and tobacco use among sexual and gender minority young adults living in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minority young adult (SGM YA) populations use tobacco at higher rates than their non-SGM YA peers. Prior studies have identified significant correlations between interpersonal stigma and tobacco use, yet structural stigma may also influence tobacco use among SGM YA. This study aimed to assess the indirect effects of structural stigma on current tobacco use among SGM YA and non-SGM YA via depletion of economic resources, interpersonal discrimination, and perceived psychological stress. METHODS: Structural Equation Modeling was used to conduct a secondary data anal

Mu-opioid mediated discriminative stimulus effects of fentanyl and xylazine: Dose-response and time-course studies.

Xylazine-adulterated fentanyl (i.e., "tranq-dope") has been identified as a national public health threat in the United States. Despite the increasing prevalence of this drug combination, little is known about the interactions between fentanyl and xylazine on measures directly relevant to their addiction liability. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether xylazine enhances or prolongs the mu-opioid mediated discriminative stimulus effects of fentanyl. To this end, male and female Long-Evans rats were trained to discriminate the prototypical mu-opioid agonist, morphine, from

Sparse Coding in Temporal Association Cortex Improves Complex Sound Discriminability.

The mouse auditory cortex is comprised of several auditory fields spanning the dorsoventral axis of the temporal lobe. The ventral most auditory field is the temporal association cortex (TeA), which remains largely unstudied. Using Neuropixels probes, we simultaneously recorded from primary auditory cortex (AUDp), secondary auditory cortex (AUDv), and TeA, characterizing neuronal responses to pure tones and frequency modulated (FM) sweeps in awake head-restrained female mice. As compared with AUDp and AUDv, single-unit (SU) responses to pure tones in TeA were sparser, delayed, and prolonged. R

Attentional modulation of parieto-occipital cortical responses: implications for hemispatial neglect.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to examine whether preattentive and attentive visual processing, the cognitive psychological dichotomy on normal vision, indeed activate the parieto-occipital systems differentially as suggested by recent neuropsychological research. The activation paradigms consisted of feature detection and discrimination of line orientation, and visual fixation, which corresponded to preattentive, attention-requiring, and baseline conditions, respectively. The detection versus fixation contrast revealed activation sites in the right lateral prefrontal co

Agency rescues competition for credit assignment among predictive cues from adverse learning conditions.

A fundamental assumption of learning theories is that the credit assigned to predictive cues is not simply determined by their probability of reinforcement, but by their ability to compete with other cues present during learning. This assumption has guided behavioral and neural science research for decades, and tremendous empirical and theoretical advances have been made identifying the mechanisms of cue competition. However, when learning conditions are not optimal (e.g., when training is massed), cue competition is attenuated. This failure of the learning system exposes the individual's vuln

Parietal alpha-based inhibitory abilities are causally linked to numerosity discrimination.

Processing numerosities relies on the innate capacity to understand and manipulate the number of items in a set, and to additional abilities such as inhibitory skills -which are known to be linked to brain oscillations in the alpha range. Whether these inhibitory skills are causally linked to numerosity processing and critical for it is unclear. To address this question, we used alpha-based brain stimulation (transcranial alternate current stimulation, tACS) to target inhibitory abilities in the context of numerosity discrimination. Twenty-nine young adults received bilateral tACS to the parie

Cognitive, Regulatory, and Interpersonal Mechanisms of HIV Stigma on the Mental and Social Health of Men Who Have Sex With Men Living With HIV.

Public stigma surrounding HIV is related to heightened emotional distress, poor psychological functioning, and reduced subjective well-being in people living with HIV. For men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV, they may also face stigmatizing attitudes within the gay community, which create an additional burden to their health. Grounded in the psychological mediation framework, the present study examined the underlying psychological processes through which HIV stigma from the public and within the gay community influences the mental and social health of MSM living with HIV. Findings

Exposure to Free-Play Modes in Simulated Online Gaming Increases Risk-Taking in Monetary Gambling.

This study examined the behavioral effects of practice modes in simulated slot machine gambling. A sample of 128 participants predominantly aged 18-24 years were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 pre-exposure conditions: control (no practice), standard 90% return to player, inflated return to player and inflated return with pop-up messages. Participants in all conditions engaged in monetary gambling using a realistic online simulation of a slot machine. As predicted, the results showed that those players exposed to inflated or 'profit' demonstration modes placed significantly higher bets in the rea

Weaver mutant mice exhibit long-term learning deficits under several measures of instrumental behavior.

Homozygous weaver mutant mice (wv/wv) exhibit symptoms that parallel Parkinson's disease, including motor deficits and the destruction of dopaminergic neurons as well as degeneration in the cerebellum and hippocampus. To develop a more complete behavioral profile of these organisms, groups of wv/wv, wv/+ mice and C57BL/6 mice were observed on a within-subjects basis under a fixed-interval schedule of reinforcement, a differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate-of-responding schedule, and a discrimination task in which a saccharin solution and tap water were concurrently available from two food cups

Caffeine and diazepam: separate and combined effects on mood, memory, and psychomotor performance.

The effects of caffeine and diazepam on several mood, cognitive, learning, memory, and psychomotor tasks were investigated in a double-blind study of 108 young healthy adults who were randomly assigned to nine treatments; oral administration of caffeine (0, 3 and 6 mg/kg), diazepam (0, 0.15, and 0.30 mg/kg) and their combinations. Subjects completed a battery of tasks once before and twice after administration of the drugs. Caffeine alone showed no effects on cognitive, learning, and memory performance, but impaired fine motor coordination and increased anxiety and tenseness. Diazepam alone pr

A novel paradigm for measuring prediction abilities in a rat model using a speech-sound discrimination task.

The ability to predict and respond to upcoming stimuli is a critical skill for all animals, including humans. Prediction operates largely below conscious awareness to allow an individual to recall previously encountered stimuli and prepare an appropriate response, especially in language. The ability to predict upcoming words within typical speech patterns aids fluent comprehension, as conversational speech occurs quickly. Individuals with certain neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and dyslexia have deficits in their ability to generate and use predictions. Rodent models are often used

Motion integration is anisotropic during smooth pursuit eye movements.

Smooth pursuit eye movements (pursuit) are used to minimize the retinal motion of moving objects. During pursuit, the pattern of motion on the retina carries not only information about the object movement but also reafferent information about the eye movement itself. The latter arises from the retinal flow of the stationary world in the direction opposite to the eye movement. To extract the global direction of motion of the tracked object and stationary world, the visual system needs to integrate ambiguous local motion measurements (i.e., the aperture problem). Unlike the tracked object, the s

Comparison of Decision-Related Signals in Sensory and Motor Preparatory Responses of Neurons in Area LIP.

Neurons in the lateral intraparietal (LIP) area of Macaques exhibit both sensory and oculomotor preparatory responses. During perceptual decision making, the preparatory responses have been shown to track the state of the evolving evidence leading to the decision. The sensory responses are known to reflect categorical properties of visual stimuli, but it is not known whether these responses also track evolving evidence. We recorded neural responses from lateral intraparietal area of 2 female rhesus monkeys during a direction discrimination task. We compared sensory and oculomotor-preparatory r
