Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a systemic disease characterized by simultaneous thrombosis, bleeding, and partially excessive fibrinolysis. Systemic shock, trauma, bacterial toxins, and procoagulants-expressing solid and hematologic malignancies are common causes of this life-threatening hemorrhagic complication and often require treatment in intensive care units. We describe a case of an elderly man with recurrent severe bleeding events in the cause of DIC, including epistaxis, hemoptysis, hematuria, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Laboratory investigations revealed elevated p…

Coagulopathies are one of the obstetric complications affecting the period of pregnancy, childbirth, and puerperium. One of the more severe and complex disorders of the haemostatic system is the disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome (DIC), in which generalised activation of the coagulation system and activation of inflammatory cells occurs. DIC syndrome was observed in patients whose pregnancy was complicated by SARS-CoV-2 infection. Both the course of these cases and literature review indicate that particular notice should be paid to laboratory parameters of the coagulation system, …

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a rare complication of endovascular aortic repair, commonly associated with type I or type III endoleaks. DIC is also known as consumption coagulopathy because excessive thrombin formation and secondary fibrinolysis leads to consumption of coagulation factors with hyperfibrinolysis and activation of platelets, which can lead to excessive bleeding. We present the case of an 80-year-old woman who had undergone thoracic endovascular aortic repair for a type B aortic dissection that was complicated by a series of recurrent endoleak-induced DICs requi…

BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) occurs in several clinical conditions, including drug therapy. We aim to investigate the association between the administration of several drug classes and the onset of DIC by using the reports of Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR) collected in Vigibase, the World Health Organization (WHO) database of ADR.
METHODS: We collected reports of drug-related DIC from 1968 to September 2015, classified in Vigibase according to the MedDRA (Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities) term "Disseminated intravascular coagulation". A disproportionality…

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between fetal death and risk of hemorrhage and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) among women undergoing dilation and evacuation (D&E) procedures.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of all D&Es at one academic abortion clinic in San Francisco between 2009 and 2013. We abstracted data on fetal death status, demographic characteristics, and complications including hemorrhage and DIC. We examined the risk of hemorrhage and DIC among women with fetal death compared with those without. We conducted unadjusted and adjusted analyses for…

BACKGROUND: Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) due to Plasmodium vivax is scarcely reported in comparison to Plasmodium falciparum. In complicated malaria, thrombocytopaenia and haemostatic alterations lead to increased activation of coagulation cascade and fibrinolytic system. Thromboelastography (TEG) is a haemostasis system which measures the viscoelastic strength of blood clot in the coagulation pathway. It detects the initial derangement in clotting cascade involving in platelet interaction and fibrinolysis. Hence, it can document the early changes in coagulation in vitro, and t…

The most common coagulopathy associated with snake envenoming worldwide is venom-induced consumption coagulopathy (VICC), which results from activation of the coagulation pathway by snake toxins including thrombin-like enzymes, prothrombin activators, and factor X activators. VICC has often been likened to disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) because of the elevated D-dimer, prolonged prothrombin time, and low fibrinogen. However, VICC is not characterized by other important features of DIC, such as evidence of systemic microthrombi and end-organ failure. In addition, the time course o…

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is one of the important complications to develop in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). While acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a strong risk factor for DIC, other clinical features have not been fully defined. We retrospectively analyzed 161 consecutive adult patients with de novo non-APL AML. DIC was diagnosed in 52 patients (32%); 28 patients at diagnosis and 24 soon after the initiation of induction chemotherapy. Leukocyte counts, C-reactive protein, and lactate dehydrogenase were significantly higher in the DIC+ group. Negative expr…

OBJECTIVE: Coagulation abnormalities after single fetal demise are well described, but similar cases had not been previously reported following therapeutic selective termination.
CASE: A 23-year-old G(3) P(2001) with a monochorionic-diamnionic twin pregnancy underwent selective termination at 20 4/7 weeks for severe twin-twin transfusion syndrome. Her fibrinogen thereafter decreased and she developed disseminated intravascular coagulopathy with pathological bleeding during a cesarean section. The maternal coagulopathy resolved postpartum.
CONCLUSION: Coagulation disorders can follow selectiv

A 54-year-old man was diagnosed as having pancreatic cancer and disseminated intravascular coagulation. His plasma tissue factor level on the 11th hospital day was 996 pg/ml (normal range, 120-270 pg/ml). He was treated with gabexate mesilate, antithrombin III, and low-molecular-weight heparin. However, he died of multiple organ failure on the 17th hospital day. The histological finding was poorly differentiated ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas, and the production of tissue factor in this lesion was revealed. Tissue factor is a factor that initiates blood coagulation; thus, its expression…

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) and acute disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
METHODS: 26 cases with PIH complicated acute DIC were analyzed retrospectively in five hospitals of Xi'an from 1980 to 1997.
RESULTS: (1) In 26 patients with PIH complicated acute DIC, 7 cases died (26.92%), while 17 neonates died (58.62%) in 29 neonates (3 cases were twin pregnancy). Cesarean section and hysterectomy were performed on 7 cases respectively, including 4 cases underwent both of them. (2) The causative factors of PIH complicated acute DIC…

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and associated multi-organ failure are serious and often terminal events of a variety of non-septic conditions. For the most part, these conditions are a result of tissue factor (thromboplastin) release from damaged tissues creating situations that favor thrombin formation. Thrombin's role in this process is critical and serves to induce the coagulopathy, as well as many of the other aspects of inflammation that contribute to the associated morbidity and mortality. Clinical disorders giving rise to DIC fall into categories of trauma, obstetrical com…

The cause of death in a 45-day-old male infant who was found apneic at home and died 21 hours later was disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). The patient was admitted to a hospital in a state of cardio-respiratory arrest. The initial diagnosis was interrupted sudden infant death syndrome. The patient remained apneic, and recurrent discharge of bloody stool was the dominant clinical findings. He died without spontaneous respiration being restored. The autopsy revealed hemorrhages in the lungs and the ventricular septum and the free wall of the left ventricle of the heart. Microscopicall…

A 57-year-old farmer was struck on the right thumb by a pit viper (Agkistrodon blomhoffü). Subsequently, he had acute renal failure and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), associated with melanotic stools and abdominal pain. Renal failure caused by renal cortical necrosis was successfully treated with hemodialysis. A double-contrast barium enema examination revealed multiple stenoses of the colon, regional edema, and longitudinal ulcer. Histologic examination of the stenotic lesions after laparotomy revealed fibrosis of both submucosa and proper muscle layer, with fibrotic thickness …

BACKGROUND: Congenital disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) has been reported in a variety of clinical settings, but to our knowledge, it has never been documented before birth. We describe prenatal identification of an umbilical cord vascular tumor and echogenic foci in the fetal liver leading to the diagnosis of fetal DIC by funipuncture.
CASE: A large vascular tumor of the umbilical cord was identified using prenatal sonography. At 31 weeks' gestation, echogenic areas, which were thought to represent infarcts or thrombi, were seen in the liver. When funipuncture revealed florid fet…
