Diving Deep Into Time: Temporal Arrangements for Embedded Visualization in Swimming Videos.

We introduce a temporal arrangement framework for embedding visualizations in sports videos with a focus on swimming. Our work is inspired by strategies used in current TV broadcasts, where visualizations are selectively displayed to provide meaningful and engaging information to audiences. We began with a systematic review of TV broadcast practices, through which we identified recurring temporal combinations of visualizations and competition statuses, which we define as patterns of temporal arrangement for embedded visualizations. To move beyond the constraints of existing broadcast practices

Intrinsic diving reflex induces potent antioxidative response by activation of NRF2 signaling.

AIMS: This study aims to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of diving reflex, a powerful endogenous mechanism supporting underwater mammalian survival. Antioxidative responses, observed in marine mammals, may be contributing factors. Using a multi-organ approach, this study assesses whether acute and chronic diving reflex activate nuclear factor-erythroid-2-related factor 2 (NRF2) signaling pathways, which regulate cellular antioxidant responses. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats ( n =38) underwent either a single diving session to elicit acute diving reflex, or daily diving sessions for 4-w…

Multifactor and multidimensional data quality analysis of judge scoring in diving competition.

INTRODUCTION: In sports competitions, judge scoring data serve as an objective measure of an athlete's performance level. However, research has indicated the unreliability of objective measurements. Controversy often arises regarding the quality of judge scoring data, undermining fairness and justice in sports competitions. METHOD: This paper proposes a method utilizing the Kendall covariance coefficient and the Kendall correlation coefficient for the thorough evaluation of judging data quality in diving events. The analysis is structured around four key elements: overall competition, individ…

Deep Diving Into the Cardiovascular Health Paradox: A Journey Towards Personalized Prevention.

OBJECTIVES: The Life's Simple 7 score (LS7) promotes cardiovascular health (CVH). Despite this, some with optimal LS7 develop cardiovascular disease (CVD), while others with poor CVH do not, termed the "CVH paradox." This paper explores pathways explaining this paradox. METHODS: We examined methodological aspects: 1) misclassification bias in self-reported lifestyle factors (smoking, physical activity, diet); 2) cumulative exposure to risk factors over a lifetime, impacting the CVH paradox. Punctual risk factor assessments are suboptimal for predicting outcomes. We proposed personalized preve

Amphibious hearing in a diving bird, the great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis).

Diving birds can spend several minutes underwater during pursuit-dive foraging. To find and capture prey, such as fish and squid, they probably need several senses in addition to vision. Cormorants, very efficient predators of fish, have unexpectedly low visual acuity underwater. So, underwater hearing may be an important sense, as for other diving animals. We measured auditory thresholds and eardrum vibrations in air and underwater of the great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis). Wild-caught cormorant fledglings were anaesthetized, and their auditory brainstem response (ABR) and eardrum…

Microarchitecture of cetacean vertebral trabecular bone among swimming modes and diving behaviors.

Cetaceans (dolphins, whales, and porpoises) are fully aquatic mammals that are supported by water's buoyancy and swim through axial body bending. Swimming is partially mediated by variations in vertebral morphology that creates trade-offs in body flexibility and rigidity between axial regions that either enhance or reduce displacement between adjacent vertebrae. Swimming behavior is linked to foraging ecology, where deep-diving cetaceans glide a greater proportion of the time compared to their shallow-diving counterparts. In this study, we categorized 10 species of cetaceans (Families Delphini…

Marine foraging ecology influences mercury bioaccumulation in deep-diving northern elephant seals.

Mercury contamination of oceans is prevalent worldwide and methylmercury concentrations in the mesopelagic zone (200-1000 m) are increasing more rapidly than in surface waters. Yet mercury bioaccumulation in mesopelagic predators has been understudied. Northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) biannually travel thousands of kilometres to forage within coastal and open-ocean regions of the northeast Pacific Ocean. We coupled satellite telemetry, diving behaviour and stable isotopes (carbon and nitrogen) from 77 adult females, and showed that variability among individuals in foraging loc…

12-lead Holter monitoring in diving and water sports: a preliminary investigation.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the utility of 12-lead Holter monitoring underwater. METHODS: A Holter monitor, recording a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) underwater, was applied to 16 pre-trained volunteer scuba divers (13 males and three females). Dive computers were synchronized with the Holter recorder to correlate the ECG tracings with diving events. Our main objective was to demonstrate the utility of recording over a period of time a good quality 12-lead ECG underwater. The ECGs were analyzed for heart rate (HR), arrhythmias, conduction abnormalities and ischaemic events in relation to vari…

Facial baroparesis: a critical differential diagnosis for scuba diving accidents--case report.

Facial nerve baroparesis is a rare and potentially under-reported complication of scuba diving. A diver, after surfacing from a shallow dive, developed isolated left-sided facial palsy accompanied by pain and decreased hearing in the left ear. No other signs or symptoms attributable to a scuba diving accident were detected. Forty minutes later, he heard a "pop" in the affected ear, after which all symptoms quickly resolved. Repeat neurological and ear examinations were normal. He showed no residual or new symptoms 24 hours later. The differential diagnosis of facial neurological deficit after …

The endoscopic diving technique in pituitary and cranial base surgery: technical note.

OBJECTIVE: We used the diving technique to go beyond mere visualization of the surgical field and used it as an important step in removing the lesion itself, improving the optical field, and optimizing visualization with a dynamic fluid film lens. Likewise, having extended endoscopic endonasal surgery to the entire base of the skull and in particular to the sinus cavity, "diving surgery" has proven to be effective in visualizing and dissecting more extended tumors. METHODS: We performed diving surgery in more than 350 surgical procedures to remove lesions in the sellar, sinus cavity, and cliv…

Internal carotid artery dissection in stroke from SCUBA diving: a case report.

Although diving with compressed air is generally safe, neurological problems resulting from infarction in SCUBA diving are well known, including arterial gas embolism and decompression sickness (caisson's disease, bends) involving the brain and spinal cord. While air gas embolism forms the overwhelming majority of causes for stroke in divers, internal carotid artery (ICA) dissection is another potential mechanism for central nervous system infarction in the setting of SCUBA diving. A 38 year-old female, who presented with complaints of headache, nausea, vomiting, and left sided hemiparesis aft…

Exposure to soda-lime dust in closed and semi-closed diving apparatus.

BACKGROUND: Chronic exposure to hyperbaric hyperoxia and venous gas microembolism have been shown to contribute to the long term health effects of diving, especially diver's lung function. Factors related to special diving equipment may add to these effects. This study was conducted to evaluate possible additional hazards for respiratory function of divers employing closed and semi-closed diving apparatus. METHODS: We analyzed soda-lime dust found in the air-intake loop of a closed-circuit oxygen rebreathing diving apparatus which had passed through the filter screen of the diving apparatus's…

Incidence of vestibular symptomatology in 2,500 U.S. Navy diving accidents (1933-1970).

The U.S. Navy diving accident records of 2,500 cases for the years 1933 to 1970 were analyzed and sorted into Type I and Type II decompression sickness. Type II was further sorted into "vestibular" and "other" categories. It was concluded that Type II symptoms accounted for 30% of the decompression accidents and it was estimated that the overall incidence of vestibular symptomatology was between 10 and 20%. Nearly 30% of the Type II cases were diagnosed as having vestibular involvement, although almost 60% of the cases contained a report of a symptom typically associated with the vestibular sy…
