In the present study, six 34-44-day-old Small-Ear-Miniature pigs and one 14-day-old Holstein calf were each fed 10,000 Philippine Taenia eggs and sacrificed 27-43 days after inoculation. The infection rate was 100% for both pigs and calf with cysticerci recovery rates of 11 and 6%, respectively. A total of 6431 cysticerci were recovered only from the livers of the six pigs and 597 only from the liver of the calf; more occurred in the parenchyma (pigs 75%, calf 83%) than on the surface (pigs 25%, calf 17%). The results of many years' observations and literature data allowed one to determine the species of wild and domestic mammalians, vectors of trichinelliasis in Kamchatka. The variability of trichinelliasis prevalence in individual mammalian species were found in relation to their habitation place. Significant fluctuations of the index are presented by years. Cases of trichinelliasis in wild American minks (acclimatized species) and in pigs were noted.

A 20-yr-old woman with no history of pulmonary disease presented with acute dyspnea and fever. After various investigations and treatments the symptoms persisted and a lung biopsy was performed. Pathologic analysis disclosed the presence of silicotic crystals within lung tissue and mediastinal lymph nodes. The patient admitted having repeatedly inhaled a domestic scouring powder rich in silica during the preceding 6 months. This is the first report of acute pulmonary silicosis developing after exposure to a common household product.

The effects of serotoninergic drugs on adrenocortical function in domestic fowl were examined. Administration of the serotonin receptor agonist 2-(1-piperazinyl)quinoline maleate (quipazine), an inhibitor of serotonin metabolism, N-methyl-N-2-propynylbenzylamine HCl (pargyline), as well as serotonin itself, all increased plasma concentrations of corticosterone. Water lead levels fell after hardening was introduced whereas there was a small rise in water lead levels in a control area monitored over the same time. Melanin inhibitor (symbol I) is shown to be inherited as a dominant to the wild type and independent of the albino locus. The gene inhibits the formation of melanin in the less intensely pigmented regions of the coat, namely, the agouti areas between the tabby pattern and the proximal portion of the hair. The only regions of the coat to retain pigment are the distal hair of the agouti areas and the tabby pattern. There is considerable variation in the expression of I, particularly upon a nonagouti background.

During a period of 30 months, from January 1977 to June 1979, Leptospira agglutinins were detected in 355 (6%) of 5841 bovine sera, 52 (10.1%) of 511 porcine sera, one (5%) of 20 equine sera and one (12.5%) of eight canine sera. Bovine, porcine and equine sera reacted predominantly with L. pomona. Reactors to L. hardjo/sejroe, L. icterohaemorrhagiae and L. grippotyphosa were also detected in cattle. One porcine serum reacted with L. grippotyphosa and one canine serum with L. icterohaemorrhagiae. Al the sera originated from suspected cases of leptospirosis.
