OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a chimeric monoclonal antibody to tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) in the treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
METHODS: Twenty patients with active RA were treated with 20 mg/kg of anti-TNF alpha in an open phase I/II trial lasting 8 weeks.
RESULTS: The treatment was well tolerated, with no serious adverse events. Significant improvements were seen in the Ritchie Articular Index, which fell from a median of 28 at study entry to a median of 6 by week 6 (P < 0.001), the swollen joint count, which fell from 18 to 5 (P < 0

Adult white mice immunized perorally with the infectious Skalica strain from the tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus complex did not show any clinical symptoms of illness. 56% of experimental animals immunized with two doses of the Skalica virus (the titer of virus was 6 x 10(10) LD50) were protected against the challenge with the Hypr strain of TBE virus. Samples of concentrated and unconcentrated preparations of Marburg virus were studied. The ultrafiltration method helped increase the specific protein content and decrease the common protein content in a preparation. Recent evidence suggests that the four electrophoretically defined gliadin subfractions (alpha, beta, gamma and omega) of wheat can induce the typical pathological finding of coeliac disease. MPB 70 is a protein found in large quantities in the culture filtrate (CF) of the Tokyo and some other strains of Mycobacterium bovis BCG, and it has a remarkable degree of specificity for these strains. We estimated the molecular weight of MPB 70 to 22,000 by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). BACKGROUND: An aluminium hydroxide-adsorbed pertussis toxoid vaccine was studied in 76 000 children in the 1990s in Gothenburg, Sweden. Long-lasting itchy subcutaneous nodules at the vaccination site were seen in 745 participants. Of 495 children with itchy nodules who were patch tested for aluminium allergy, 377 were positive. In 2007-2008, 241 of the positive children were retested. Only in one third were earlier positive results reproduced.
