Public health and insomnia: economic impact.

There seems to be a lack of understanding between practitioners and patients on the topic of insomnia. One adult out of four complains of insomnia; however only one insomniac out of four has ever complained about it to their practitioner during a visit made for another problem and only one out of twenty has come to discuss specifically the problem of his or her insomnia. Only a few patients with insomnia take a treatment for it. This gap between the patient's feeling and the practitioner's answer has to be better understood if we want to know why insomnia seems to be so prevalent and what impa

The Social Costs of Gambling: An Economic Perspective.

Much of the opposition to legalized gambling is based on analyses of the social costs that occur as a result of pathological gambling. It is … egitimately be classified as social costs. Second, we evaluate a recent social cost study using the economics social cost paradigm. Third, we discuss two types of social costs that have been largely overlooked in the gambling literature. One is caused by gambling prohibition. The other occurs as a result of "rent seeking" that is related to the political pr …

[Political and economic aspects of heart transplantation].

Organ transplant, like any other area of modern medicine, has manifold implications for human values and ethics, while sociology, law, economics and politics are equally involved. A brief review is presented of the political and economic aspects of cardiac transplantation, covering a short overview of current Swiss legislation, the problem of organ allocation, limitation of transplant centres, restriction of transplant medicine to public hospitals, cost of transplant procedures and subsequent treatment, and costs generated by alternative options such as ventricular assist devices. Current tran…

[Megaloblastic anemia: rapid and economical study].

The diagnosis of megaloblastic anaemias caused by cobalamine or folate deficiency are still difficult. The dosage of these two substances help to differenciate between both carencies, but it is not determinant of any of them and is an expensive method. Homocisteinuria (HC), methylmalonuria (MMA) and formiminoglutamic acid (FIGLU) are cheap tests which could help in the differential diagnosis, if they are used properly. We report 62 patients to whom we made these test simultaneously. All of the patients received 10 micrograms of vit B12 and after 72 hours, 1 mg/day of folic acid (for 3 days). I

Economic evaluation of new medical technology.

Safety and efficacy are not the only parameters of interest for choice of medical technology--costs play an increasingly important role. There is a growing interest in 'value for money', which can be assessed by economic evaluation comparing the costs and consequences of alternative courses of action. A number of different economic evaluation methods may be used: cost-minimization (looking only at costs with no consideration of consequences); cost-effectiveness (in which a unidimensional clinical outcome is assessed, for example, life-years gained); cost-utility (measuring multidimensional out

[Economic aspects of surgical antibiotic prophylaxis].

The cost of an antibiotic is easily evaluated in the case of antimicrobial prophylaxis. The other expenses, either direct or indirect costs, are much more difficult to assess. Studies evaluating the economical impact of the prophylactic antibiotics are rather rare. Antibiotic prescription for prophylaxis is evaluated to represent about 20 to 30% of the total antibiotic administration in French hospitals. The most significant studies evaluate the cost/benefit ratio and demonstrate the advantage of prophylaxis in orthopaedic, vascular and gynaecologic surgery.

Economic impact of influenza. The individual's perspective.

The estimated average economic cost of influenza in the United States exceeds $1 billion each year, and the actual cost is more likely on the order of $3 to $5 billion per year. Benefit-cost models generally indicate that the benefits of influenza immunization for persons aged 65 and over outweigh the cost (when one excludes the cost of medical care in the additional years of healthy life gained by immunization). The low acceptance of influenza immunization suggests that individuals do not see the benefit-cost equation in the same way that policymakers do. This article presents a benefit-cost

The economic costs of illness: a replication and update.

The economic burden resulting from illness, disability, and premature death is of major importance in the allocation of health care resources and in the evaluation of health research and programs. This article updates the 1963 and 1972 studies of the costs of illness. In 1980, the estimated total economic costs of illness were $455 billion: $211 billion for direct costs, $68 billion for morbidity, and $176 billion for mortality. Diseases of the circulatory system and injuries and poisonings were the most costly, with variations in the diagnostic distributions among the three types of costs and

Human infections: economic implications and prevention.

Morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases clearly remain high. Economic assessments should not be based soley on the costs of existing disease but should incorporate costs saved by preventive efforts as well as savings likely to be attained within several years by improved preventive measures. These factors can be used to assess the relative needs for research for specific infections and to compare the economic importance of infections with that of other health problems. Preventive activities for individuals and for larger groups are outlined, and the relation of research to prevention

Faster but Not Truer, Part 1: A Systematic Scoping Review of Artificial Intelligence in Health Economics and Outcomes Research.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is being introduced into every stage of the health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) production line, from literature screening to causal estimation. The field lacks a defensible count of what has been done, and bibliometric claims about AI adoption circulate without measured error rates. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR, we searched PubMed for AI terms co-occurring with HEOR terms for publications from 2010 through 2025, retrieved 2642 records, and included 2476 after screening. Records were classified into 8 nonexclusive application domains and 1 o…

"To reach the new generation… TikTok:" Applying behavioral economics to adolescent and young adult HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis education.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate how adolescents and young adults (AYA) would respond to the framing of health messages for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) using principles of psychology and economics (behavioral economics). Our hypothesis was that gain-frame messaging (focused on benefits) would be better received than loss-frame messaging (focused on risks). METHODS: Focus groups were held to determine AYA preferences for messaging around PrEP to design a social media video. Two videos were developed using either gain-frame (emphasized positive effects of PrEP) or loss-frame messaging (emphas…

Behavioral economics of polysubstance use: The role of orexin-1 receptors in nicotine-induced augmentation of synthetic opioid consumption.

Nicotine and opioid use disorders are highly comorbid in clinical populations. Ongoing nicotine administration facilitates opioid consumption in both rodents and humans. Moreover, preclinical studies support that former exposure to nicotine solely during adolescence augments opioid consumption in adulthood similarly to acute nicotine administration. This suggests that developmental nicotine exposure persistently alters the neural substrates underlying motivation in a manner that resembles the acute pharmacological actions of nicotine. The orexin system mediates motivation to consume opioids in
