Behavior Sequence Analysis of Victims' Accounts of Intimate Partner Violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) relates not only to physical forms of abuse, but also psychological, emotional, economic, and financial controlling behaviors. IPV is a dynamic, complex phenomenon that occurs over a relatively long period of time. While several measures of IPV exist, a method that can track the progression and escalation of such behaviors in relationships could offer more understanding and highlight key intervention points for individuals in such relationships. Behavior Sequence Analysis is used in the current research to map the chain and progression of behaviors in multiple r

Economic instability and substance use among adults in 10 US states: Evidence from a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Economic instability may shape substance use (i.e., cigarette use and cannabis use) among the adult population. However, their relationship remains poorly understood. This study estimated the prevalence of economic instability indicators (i.e., employment instability, received food stamps, food insecurity, housing insecurity, and threatened utility shutoffs), exclusive cigarette use (TU), exclusive cannabis use (CU), and cigarette-cannabis co-use (TCU), and investigated the associations between economic instability indicators and these distinct substance use patterns among adults a

Bioactive hydrogels from chitosan-gelatin-PVA@PVP@ZnO for enhanced antimicrobial activities for wound healing.

Skin wound treatment and rehabilitation affect individuals and world health economically and socially. The negative impacts of infections, protracted recovery, and treatment costs cause this socio-economic burden. Herein, we have developed novel hydrogels from chitosan, gelatin, and PVA, crosslinked with TEOS and incorporated with PVP-coated ZnO (PVP@ZnO). These formulations were characterized to determine their structural behavior, porous morphology, thermal stability, and wettability using FTIR, SEM, TGA, and water contact system. The analyses, including swelling in different media, biodegra

Associations of poverty, substance use, and HIV transmission risk behaviors in three South African communities.

The majority of the world's HIV infections occur in communities ravished by poverty. Although HIV/AIDS and poverty are inextricably linked, there are few studies of how poverty-related stressors contribute to HIV risk behavior practices. In this study, surveys were conducted in three South African communities that varied by race and socio-economic conditions: people living in an impoverished African township (N = 499); an economically impoverished but well infrastructured racially integrating township (N = 995); and urban non-impoverished neighborhoods (N = 678). Results showed that HIV/AIDS r

Youth and America's future: the forgotten half.

The William T. Grant Foundation's Commission on Youth and America's Future was created to review existing research on problems facing young people in America today, and to make policy recommendations based upon the results of that research. The Commission found that fewer economic opportunities are available today, especially to non-college-bound young people, than was the case even a decade ago. This situation has had an adverse effect on the youths themselves, their families, and ultimately, on American society as a whole. Many problem behaviors have their origin in the reduced opportunities

Does family migration affect health-related quality of life? a cross-sectional survey of the health status of migrants in China.

BACKGROUND: Family migration is a trend of domestic population migration in China. However, few studies have investigated the impact of family migration on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of migrants. OBJECTIVE: To understand the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of migrants during urban development in China, and to analyze its influencing factors from the perspective of integrating family migration patterns with individual health behaviors. METHOD: Wilcoxon rank sum test and Kruskal-Wallis H test were used to analyze the differences in health-related quality of life among th

What is possible and what is worth: Higher levers afford more work and enhance the value of leisure.

This study investigated how variations in the physical properties of an operant manipulandum (i.e., lever height), affect behavior under a progressive ratio (PR) schedule. Lever height was analyzed from two complementary frameworks: the ecological theory of affordances and the economic theory of utility maximization, specifically through the Modular Maximization Theory. Rats were exposed to 60 progressive ratio (PR) sessions in which lever height varied daily pseudorandomly between 1, 11, and 18 cm. Results showed that breakpoints, response rates, and parameter estimates of response capacity (

Tool of economic development, metric of global health: Promoting planned families and economized life in Nepal.

In contemporary global health and development discourses, contraception is cast in multiple roles: an antipoverty tool at the household level, a tool of economic development at the national level, a smart investment with net gains, a means of empowering women, a way of lowering maternal mortality ratios. In order to examine such discursive uses of contraception - and their implications for women - in a concrete way, I use a compelling case of the history of the promotion of planned families in Nepal and a recent social and behavior change communication contraception campaign designed in the US

[Possibilities of behavior therapy in neurologic practice].

During one year one day the week a psychiatrist and a behavior therapist cooperate in treating neurotic patients asking for help in the psychiatrist's praxis. The main interest has been to orientate the whole way of treatment-beginning with intake interview in the psychiatrist's praxis continuing in some cases with an offer of immediate behavioral therapy-at those principles the modern behavior therapy commonly uses. Those kinds of "behavioral" problem analyses the outpatient unit for behavior modification University Clinic Hamburg has developed the last ten years have been very helpful; furth

The environmental Kuznets curve and CO2 emissions in the USA : Is the relationship between GDP and CO2 emissions time varying? Evidence across economic sectors.

In this paper, we analyze the existence of the environmental Kuznets curve as reported by Kuznets (Am Econ Rev 5:1-28, 1955) by using the methodology proposed by Kejriwal and Perron (J Econ 146:59-73, 2008, J Bus Econ Stat 28:503-522, 2010) and applying Jaunky's (Energy Policy 39(3):1228-1240, 2011) specification using quarterly data from 1973:1 to 2015:2. We also allow different behaviors across time and identify it by economic sectors. Our results show the existence of the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) in the USA only when we allow for structural breaks. Interestingly, the industrial sec

Tobacco consumption, gender and caregiving: a case study in Argentina.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the gender-specific economic impacts of tobacco price increases, focusing on their effects on caregiving time, female labour income and total family income within Argentine households. METHODS: Using Argentine data, the research employs simulations to assess the potential changes in economic indicators following a hypothetical 25% increase in tobacco prices. The analysis considers specific behavioral assumptions to model household responses. RESULTS: Simulations indicate that a 25% increase in tobacco prices is associated with a potential increase in the

Inattention in boys from low-income backgrounds predicts welfare receipt: a 30-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood disruptive behaviors are highly prevalent and associated with adverse long-term social and economic outcomes. Trajectories of welfare receipt in early adulthood and the association of childhood behaviors with high welfare receipt trajectories have not been examined. METHODS: Boys (n = 1000) from low socioeconomic backgrounds were assessed by kindergarten teachers for inattention, hyperactivity, aggression, opposition, and prosociality, and prospectively followed up for 30 years. We used group-base trajectory modeling to estimate trajectories of welfare receipt from age 1

Terror in the dirt: Sensory determinants of host seeking in soil-transmitted mammalian-parasitic nematodes.

Infection with gastrointestinal parasitic nematodes is a major cause of chronic morbidity and economic burden around the world, particularly in low-resource settings. Some parasitic nematode species, including the human-parasitic threadworm Strongyloides stercoralis and human-parasitic hookworms in the genera Ancylostoma and Necator, feature a soil-dwelling infective larval stage that seeks out hosts for infection using a variety of host-emitted sensory cues. Here, we review our current understanding of the behavioral responses of soil-dwelling infective larvae to host-emitted sensory cues, an

Pathways Connecting Housing Assistance to Child Well-Being in Families Experiencing Homelessness.

Recent increases in family homelessness place children at heightened risk for long-term health challenges. Research has shown that long-term rental subsidies reduce emotional-behavioral and sleep problems among children in homeless families, but the pathways driving these effects are not well understood. This study examined mediating pathways between assignment to housing assistance interventions and improvements in children's emotional-behavioral and sleep outcomes three years later. We used data from the Family Options Study (FOS), a randomized controlled trial by the US Department of Housin

Regional personality differences predict variation in early COVID-19 infections and mobility patterns indicative of social distancing.

The early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic revealed stark regional variation in the spread of the virus. While previous research has highlighted the impact of regional differences in sociodemographic and economic factors, we argue that regional differences in social and compliance behaviors-the very behaviors through which the virus is transmitted-are critical drivers of the spread of COVID-19, particularly in the early stages of the pandemic. Combining self-reported personality data that capture individual differences in these behaviors (3.5 million people) with COVID-19 prevalence and mortali

The Continuing Challenge of Reducing HIV Risk among Haitian Youth: The Need for Intervention.

There is a dire need for interventions that will address the multiple factors--poverty, substance use, early sexual debut, and violence--that influence Haitian youth's engagement in risky behaviors. The deteriorating socioeconomic and political state of the country has had a deleterious effect on the sociocultural milieu and on the boundaries that have heretofore kept risky behaviors in check. Historically, the lakou system, a community-based approach that supports the family unit, has disintegrated, leading to the disruption of traditional parenting patterns. The unstable economic system has

Social science research in malaria prevention, management and control in the last two decades: an overview.

In the recent past, considerable progress has been made in understanding how human behavior and social organization, macro- and micro-level economic processes, and health and political systems affect responses to malaria at global, national, community, household, and individual levels. Advances in malaria-related social, behavioral, economic, evaluation, health systems, and policy (social science) research have resulted in improvements in the design and implementation of malaria prevention, management and control (PMC) strategies. Indeed, the past two decades chronicle dramatic advances in the
