Through the GeneMatcher data-sharing database, we identified five affected individuals from four unrelated families with a skeletal dysplasia who have biallelic, putatively deleterious variants in MIMS1 (formerly FAM210A). The common features included chondrodysplasia with short stature, tracheal stenosis, conical teeth and/or early tooth decay, and sparse hair suggestive of ectodermal dysplasia as a component of the phenotype. The radiographic features included platyspondyly, epiphyseal dysplasia of the long bones, short phalanges with delayed carpal ossification, lacy iliac crests, and calca…

BACKGROUND: Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) often results in congenital tooth agenesis and severe developmental alveolar ridge defects, leading to functional impairments, reduced masticatory efficiency, and psychosocial challenges. Limited local blood supply and rapid bone resorption in ED patients pose significant challenges for predictable implant rehabilitation, highlighting the need for biologically guided, long-term restorative strategies. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old male patient with hypohidrotic ED (HED) presented with multiple congenitally missing teeth (FDI 12–16, 22–26, 34–35, 42, 44…

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a group of rare hereditary disorders characterized by impaired development of ectodermal derivatives. The anhidrotic (hypohidrotic) form of ED is accompanied by pronounced hypoplasia of the jaws, partial or complete adontia, leading to functional impairments (difficulty chewing, swallowing, and speaking) and pronounced aesthetic changes. These factors have a significant impact on the quality of life of patients, causing psychological discomfort and social maladjustment. The article presents in detail a clinical case of a 20-year-old patient with anhidrotic (hypohid…

BACKGROUND: Ectodermal dysplasia is a congenital genetic disorder with a prevalence of 1:10,000 to 1:100,000. The clinical features of ectodermal dysplasia include sparse hair, missing teeth, and abnormal development of the skin, sweat glands, and other tissues and organs. Since 1985, dentists have used implants to correct tooth defects in patients with ectodermal dysplasia with reasonable success rates. However, there is still no widely accepted treatment for the oral defects caused by this disease.Case summary: This report describes a 19-year-old female patient with congenital ectodermal dys…

BACKGROUND: Ectrodactyly ectodermal dysplasia-cleft syndrome is a rare genetic syndrome with an incidence of 1/90,000 live births, characterized by cleft lip and palate, severely hypoplastic maxilla, and hypodontia. Patients diagnosed with ectrodactyly ectodermal dysplasia-cleft syndrome suffer from a severely hypoplastic maxilla that is highly difficult to treat using traditional orthognathic methods. In this study, we propose using distraction osteogenesis to achieve a major advancement while maintaining good stability and minimal relapse. To our knowledge, this is the first description of p…

X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XLHED), the most frequent form of ectodermal dysplasia, is a genetic disorder of ectoderm development characterized by malformation of multiple ectodermal structures such as skin, hair, sweat and sebaceous glands, and teeth. The disease is caused by a broad spectrum of mutations in the gene EDA. Although XLHED symptoms show inter-familial and intra-familial variability, genotype-phenotype correlation has been demonstrated with respect to sweat gland function. In this study, we investigated to which extent the EDA genotype correlates with the severity…

INTRODUCTION: Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a rare disease combining hypodontia, hypotrichosis, and hypohidrosis. The quality of life is greatly impaired very early, with major difficulty for feeding and the drawbacks of usual dental prostheses. Early implant placement is a therapeutic alternative. It is usually performed in areas of stable growth, such as the mandibular symphysis. We report the case of very early implant placement in a child presenting with hypodontia related to ectodermal dysplasia.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-year-old male patient was treated with maxillary and mandibular …

UNLABELLED: X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XLHED; ectodysplasin deficiency) has been classically described as affecting hair, sweat glands, and dentition. What may be underappreciated is the effect ectodysplasin deficiency has on glands surrounding the airways and eyes and the resulting chronic health issues. In this study, 12 male children (age range 6-13 years) and 14 male adults with XLHED (18-58 years of age) were investigated by pulmonary function tests, measurement of fractional exhaled nitric oxide, and by ophthalmologic assessments. Twelve healthy individuals (six children…

Hypohidrotic/ anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is characterized by hypotrichosis (sparseness of scalp and body hair), hypohidrosis (reduced ability to sweat), and hypodontia (decreased tooth development). Sweating is either absent or greatly deficient leading to an increased risk for hyperthermia. This is a relatively common genetic condition; it is estimated that 1 in approximately 5000–10 000 newborns has HED (Wright et al., 2009). Here, we report an infant with HED who presented with a heat stroke-like condition in the extreme winter months of Michigan.

Ectrodactyly-ectrodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant genetic syndrome. This condition is characterized by varying degrees of ectrodactyly and syndactyly of the hands and feet, a cleft lip with or without a cleft palate, and ectodermal dysplasia. In addition, abnormalities of the genitourinary system occur frequently in association with this syndrome. The wide clinical variability of EEC syndrome has been well documented in the literature, and none of the 3 cardinal signs seem to be obligatory. We present a case of classic familial EEC syndrome diagnosed by pr…

The hereditary condition known as ectodermal dysplasia is characterized by the absence or defect of 2 or more ectodermally derived structures. A case of a 6-year-old child with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with complete anodontia is presented. Common dental, oral, and physical conditions were taken into consideration. Clinical management consisted of removable complete dentures to improve psychologic development and to promote better functioning of the stomatognathic system.

As reliable data on Chlamydia trachomatis infection in Italy are lacking and as there is no Italian screening policy, epidemiological analyses are needed to optimise effective strategies for surveillance of the infection in the country. We collected data from 6,969 sexually active women aged 15 to 55 years who underwent testing for endocervical C. trachomatis infection at the Cervico-Vaginal Pathology Unit in the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Sapienza University in Rome between 2000 and 2009. The mean prevalence of C. trachomatis endocervical infection during this period was 5.2%

We describe a three-generation family with an autosomal dominant hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia consisting mainly of tricho- and onychodysplasia. One of the patients had supraventricular tachycardia, another had palpitations, and two others had sinus brachycardia. We consider that the clinical manifestations in this family differ significantly from those of the Clouston syndrome (their previous diagnosis) and places them in Group A, subgroup 1-3 (tricho-onychic) of the ectodermal dysplasia classification proposed by Freire-Maia and Pinheiro [1988, "Ectodermal Dysplasias"].

X linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia was studied in the dentition of both affected males and carrier females. Hypodontia was more severe in males than females and there were differences in the pattern of tooth absence between the sexes. Abnormal crown form, with the maximum diameter of the teeth being apically displaced, was noted particularly in the anterior teeth. Taurodontism was commonly seen radiographically.

Prenatal diagnosis of X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia was previously performed by the direct histological analysis of fetal skin obtained by late second trimester fetoscopy. The recent gene mapping of the locus for the disorder to the region of Xq11-21.1 now permits the indirect prenatal diagnosis of the disorder by the method of linkage analysis, based on closely linked marker loci, during the first trimester of pregnancy. We report the prenatal diagnosis of a male fetus with a high probability of the disorder by a linkage analysis utilizing restriction fragment length polymorphism…

In cases with severe hypodontia, it is necessary to make a treatment plan in collaboration with different disciplines in dentistry, with the treatment plan formed in such a way that many possibilities for treatment could be used in the future. Partial and full dentures combine simple methods with good esthetic and functional results in the growing individual. They also afford time to assess the patient with regard to more extensive restorative treatment. Patients suffering from severe hypodontia have so far been very dependent on their remaining teeth. The case reported covers a twenty-year pe
