BACKGROUND: Arthrodesis of the elbow is a rarely performed procedure sometimes considered when no other reliable surgical solutions exist. Most published reports are limited to single case reports or very small series. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes and complications of patients who underwent elbow arthrodesis and to determine whether this is a worthwhile salvage procedure for elbows not amendable to surgical reconstruction or arthroplasty.
METHODS: Between 2000 and 2024, a retrospective review was performed of 13 elbows (13 patients) that underwent elbow arthrodesis a…

A 27-year-old Indonesian man, presented to the ED with a non-healing wound on his left elbow and unintentional weight loss of 6 kg. Further investigation revealed the unexpected cause: An inadequate treated disseminated tuberculosis. This case highlights the importance of considering extrapulmonary TB in persistent soft tissue infections.

Ultrasound imaging of the elbow is an invaluable tool that enhances diagnostic precision and facilitates therapeutic procedures with high accuracy. Compared to palpation-guided techniques, ultrasound-guided interventions significantly improve precision. This article reviews ultrasound-guided techniques for elbow joint interventions, including intra-articular injections, tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, triceps and distal biceps tendinopathy, and ulnar nerve neuropathy. Practical guidance is provided on probe selection, patient positioning, and step-by-step procedural details. Special emphasis is …

BACKGROUND: Elbow injuries are becoming increasingly prevalent in throwing athletes. Early diagnosis, especially in athletes, can allow for earlier intervention and return to play. It is important for clinicians to have a framework to systemically examine the elbow to accurately diagnose a variety of elbow pathologies in this unique patient population.
INDICATIONS: The purpose of this video is to educate clinicians on how to diagnose a variety of elbow pathologies in the throwing athlete. Currently, there is no published video describing the evaluation of the elbow in throwing athletes with a…

Compared with hip and knee arthroplasty, total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) has a higher complication rate and lower survivorship. Modern TEA implants most commonly require revision due to implant loosening, infection, and periprosthetic fracture. Concerns with revision TEA include handling of the soft tissues and possible necessity of flap coverage, triceps management, preservation of bone stock, and management of concurrent infection or fracture. In this review, we will discuss preoperative evaluation of the failed elbow arthroplasty, surgical approaches, techniques for revision, outcomes, and c…

Elbow injuries are a growing problem particularly among overhead athletes, because more children and adolescents are participating in sporting activities. The goal of surgical management of elbow injuries is to restore the capsuloligamentous and osseous contributions to stability. However, postoperative MR imaging evaluation is difficult because of the variety of surgical techniques available, and the lack of postoperative MR imaging for suspected complications because many are diagnosed clinically and a revision may be performed without imaging. This article reviews some of the commonly perfo…

Ulnar collateral, radial collateral, lateral ulnar collateral, and annular ligaments can be injured in an acute trauma, such as valgus stress in athletes and elbow dislocation. Recognizing normal anatomy in magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography studies is important to identify ligamentous abnormalities in these imaging modalities.

The treatment of inflammatory arthritis with disease modifying drugs and biological agents had reduced the number of patients needing surgic … urgery. This review will cover the key articular and peri-articular pathologies that can affect the elbow in inflammatory arthritis and discuss the treatment strategies available to the orthopaedic surgeon in their management. From surgical point of view, the rheumatoid elbow can be classified into 4 types: 1) classic soft tissue type with increased joi …

Terrible triad injury of the elbow is a complex injury that is classically defined as elbow dislocation along with fractures of the coronoid process of the ulna and the radial head. The injury is usually associated with typical soft-tissue disruptions (with common involvement of the lateral collateral ligament complex, elbow joint capsule, as well as the common extensor and flexor-pronator tendons) that are best understood in the context of injury mechanism as well as the role and relevance of the various elbow stabilizers. The goals of this article are to review the pertinent anatomy, mechani…

The elbow has a major role in helping with the positioning of the hand in space. Any pathology of the joint can result in pain, loss of function and difficulties with activities of daily living. With an increasingly elderly population the degenerative conditions affecting the elbow are becoming more prevalent. Besides traumatic injury, the more commonly encountered problems are osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, nerve compression and stiffness. An awareness of these conditions is important for those who provide care to this patient group. Whilst many of these conditions can be managed con…

BACKGROUND: Chronic ligamentous instability of the elbow is an important pathology as it is accompanied with pronounced dysfunction. Moreover, it represents an established risk factor for the development of osteoarthritis. Posterolateral rotatory instability (PLRI) caused by insufficiency of the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) is the most common type of chronic elbow instability and is usually a sequel of traumatic elbow dislocation. Chronic overload can lead to insufficiency of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) with subsequent valgus instability, especially in overhead athletes.

Neuropathic Arthropathy or Charcot joint is a progressive, destructive arthritis that is associated with an underlying neurological disorder. We present a case of a 30 year-old male who, three years prior, had ruptured his right distal biceps tendon with subsequent development of a deep infection. At representation, the patient's clinical picture was consistent with the re-emergence of a deep elbow infection. Laboratory testing found no evidence of infection. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) of the patient's spine revealed a syringomyelia and a NA was diagnosed. The purpose of this report is t…

The treatment of terrible triad injuries of the elbow continues to evolve. Radial head fixation and arthroplasty, coronoid process fixation, and repair of the lateral collateral ligament continue to be the mainstays of treatment. In the elbow with persistent instability after repair of these elements, application of a static external fixation, hinged external fixation, ulnohumeral joint pinning, or an internal hinge may be needed. In patients who undergo treatment after the acute injury period, the coronoid may require reconstruction using radial head autograft, iliac crest autograft, olecrano…

Post-traumatic osteoarthritis of the elbow is an uncommon condition in which the clinical manifestations are often at variance with the radiological findings. In symptomatic forms, pain and stiffness are variably combined. When non-operative management fails, the decision to perform surgery is taken on a case-by-case basis depending on age, activity level, patient discomfort, and osteoarthritis location and severity as assessed by CT scan arthrography. Elbow instability or subluxation should be sought. Post-traumatic elbow osteoarthritis raises difficult therapeutic problems in young patients.…
