Posttraumatic elbow contracture following trans-olecranon fracture-dislocation presents a complex challenge due to extensive soft tissue damage and joint stiffness. We report a case of a 46-year-old man who developed severe elbow contracture after the open reduction and internal fixation of a trans-olecranon fracture-dislocation, with a flexion-extension arc limited to 40° and forearm rotation restricted to 50°. A stepwise, three-phased surgical approach was employed. The first stage consisted of arthroscopic capsular release to address flexion-extension contracture. The second stage involved

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis may adversely affect implant fixation and bone integrity following total elbow arthroplasty (TEA), yet its impact on postoperative complications remains incompletely defined. This study compared outcomes following TEA in patients with and without osteoporosis.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed including 1,410 adult patients who underwent total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) with a minimum follow-up of two years. Patients with osteoporosis were matched to an equal number of patients without osteoporosis based on demographics, comorbidities, surgical indicatio

This case study examines the non-surgical treatment of post-traumatic elbow stiffness following a distal humerus fracture. A 25-year-old male patient presented with significant pain and a severe restriction in elbow flexion nine months after his injury. The patient had a delayed presentation to the specialist, having previously undergone an unsuccessful closed reduction and manipulation by a local health care provider. The patient received a hydro-dissection procedure using a mixture of corticosteroids, hyaluronidase, and local anesthesia. Within three days of the treatment, he experienced imp

Medial epicondyle fractures are uncommon elbow injuries and require careful radiological evaluation for appropriate diagnosis and management. Missed or neglected medial epicondyle fractures, however, are reported as uncommon reports or small series. Incarceration of the medial epicondyle fragment within the elbow joint is often reported and poses therapeutic challenges. Severe displacement of the medial epicondyle fragment and its anterior incarceration within the soft tissues is a rare entity. Here, we report a two-month-old untreated case of an anteriorly displaced medial epicondyle fracture

We present an unusual case involving the simultaneous dislocation of the trans-scapho-retro-lunate in the right wrist and a posterolateral dislocation in the right elbow joint with a distal radius fracture in a 23-year-old male with no notable medical history. These injuries occurred when he fell from a height of around 12 meters onto his outstretched right hand. The patient presented to the hospital in a normal upper limb trauma position with no discomfort to critical functions. Predominant symptoms at the emergency department were discomfort in the right wrist, hand, and ipsilateral elbow, a

INTRODUCTION: Elbow stiffness is an uncommon condition that significantly impacting a patient's daily activities. Trauma is the most frequent cause of elbow stiffness. However, capitellum fractures are rare, accounting for approximately 1 % of elbow fractures. They are often misdiagnosed due to nonspecific symptoms and the complex anatomy of the elbow joint.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 54-year-old female who presented with left elbow stiffness eight months after a traumatic incident. On physical examination, her left elbow extension was +10°, and flexion was restricted to 65°, …

BACKGROUND: The lateral approach to the radial head remains the routinely used approach for surgical fixation or replacement despite the risk of injury to lateral soft tissue structures. Multiple approaches are required when dealing with complex elbow injuries involving other bony and soft tissue structures which lead to greater soft tissue dissection, prolonged immobilization, and a higher rate of elbow stiffness. This article utilizes a single posterior approach involving the Boyd interval in the surgical management of radial head fractures with an associated elbow injury.
METHODS: Thirteen

Transposition of the proximal radioulnar joint, so-called convergent elbow dislocation, is an extremely rare injury whereby the proximal radius crosses over the proximal ulnar and converges medially. This injury can occur in isolation or even less frequently in association with a posterior humeroulnar dislocation. Open reduction is almost always necessary. The diagnosis is frequently delayed as the injury is easily overlooked. In the literature, 13 cases in children and 2 in adults have so far been described. This is the first report of a combined elbow dislocation (posterior and convergent) w

INTRODUCTION: Distal humeral fractures in the elderly patient are a therapeutic challenge for orthopaedists, because of ages characteristic physiological conditions and bone changes.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of an 80-year-old woman with osteopenia, who had distal humeral fracture due to a fall from her own height; she was initially treated conservatively, but by the reason of a non-union, we decided to perform a total elbow arthroplasty, achieving a positive functional result in the four years of postoperative follow-up.
DISCUSSION: Nonsurgical management is an option for treat humer

The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) complex of the elbow is a capsuloligamentous structure, critical for elbow stability. Though isolated ligamentous injuries have been reported in literature, there are no studies reporting avulsion fractures of the lateral ligamentous complex of the elbow with joint incarceration in a child. An 11-year-old boy presented to the emergency department after a fall from height, with pain and swelling to the lateral side of his left elbow. Radiographs established a fracture of the lateral condyle and CT imaging confirmed an avulsion of the lateral ligamentous com

RATIONALE: Posteromedial dislocations of the elbow with lateral humeral condylar fractures (LCFs) are uncommon, and only isolated cases have been reported in the English-language literature. Because of the complex radiolucent cartilaginous structures and late-appearing ossification centers, radiological diagnosis of elbow dislocations with LCF in children is challenging.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We report three children with posteromedial elbow dislocation: two patients with Milch type I and one patient with Milch type II LCF.
DIAGNOSES: In our report, radiographs showed only a small bone fragment,

Extruded middle segment of radius with open segmental fracture both bone forearm and dislocation of ipsilateral elbow is a rare injury. A 12-year-old child presented to us within 4 hours following fall from tree. The child's mother was carrying a 12-cm-long extruded soiled segment of radius. The extruded bone was thoroughly washed. The medullary cavity was properly syringed with antiseptic solution. The bone was autoclaved and put in the muscle plane of the distal forearm after debridement of the wound. After 5 days, a 2.5-mm K-wire was introduced by retrograde method into the proximal radius

Tuberculosis (TB) occurring after a closed bone fracture in the patient with no history of TB and no evidence of TB infection at the time of initial fracture is a rare entity. We report one such case of a 48-year-old female, who presented in the emergency department with an olecranon fracture which was open reduced and internally fixed with tension band wiring. Patient presented in the outpatient department with serosanguineous discharge at 3 weeks after surgery. The discharge was sent for culture and sensitivity tests, and the patient was managed by antibiotics and daily dressings. There was

OBJECTIVE: An elbow joint effusion with no fracture seen on radiographs after acute trauma has become synonymous with occult fracture. This study evaluates the incidence of fracture in such cases as determined by MR imaging and the predictive value of an elbow joint effusion.
METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients whose posttrauma elbow radiographs showed an effusion but no fracture and who were suitable for MR imaging were recruited. The elbow effusion size, represented by anterior and posterior fat pad displacement, was measured from the initial lateral elbow radiograph. Suitable candidates u

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar humerus fractures are the most common elbow fractures in the pediatric population. Despite evolving management concepts, there is limited evidence comparing different cast types for immobilization following operative management. This study compared above-elbow casts that leave the wrist and hand free (experimental group) versus standard above-elbow casts that include the wrist and hand for the postoperative treatment of supracondylar humerus fractures in children.
METHODS: In this randomized prospective study, 255 patients aged 3-10 years with isolated, operatively t…

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a major complication following complex elbow fracture-dislocations and often leads to postoperative stiffness and impaired functional recovery. However, data focusing exclusively on complex elbow fracture-dislocations remain limited. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence and severity of HO, identify independent risk factors, and evaluate its impact on mid-term functional outcome.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed including 169 patients who underwent surgical treatment for complex elbow fracture-dislocations between

PURPOSE: Total elbow arthroplasty (TEA) can be used to treat both distal humerus fractures and arthritis of the elbow joint. This study aimed to compare complication, reoperation, and revision rates following TEA between these two indications.
METHODS: A retrospective review of TEA was performed within a single large orthopedic practice. All patients who had undergone a TEA between 2016 and 2020, yielding 96 TEA cases for analysis, were queried. TEA cases were categorized by indication into arthritis diagnoses (AX) and distal humerus fractures (FX). Demographic and clinical data, complication
