Trans-Spinal Electrical Stimulation Therapy for Functional Rehabilitation after Spinal Cord Injury: Review.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most debilitating injuries in the world. Complications after SCI, such as respiratory issues, bowel/bladder incontinency, pressure ulcers, autonomic dysreflexia, spasticity, pain, etc., lead to immense suffering, a remarkable reduction in life expectancy, and even premature death. Traditional rehabilitations for people with SCI are often insignificant or ineffective due to the severity and complexity of the injury. However, the recent development of noninvasive electrical neuromodulation treatments to the spinal cord have shed a ray of hope for these indi

Electrical stimulation of cerebellar fastigial nucleus protects against cerebral ischemic injury by PPARγ upregulation.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebellar fastigial nucleus stimulation (FNS) has been shown to protect against cerebral ischemic injury. Peroxisome proliferator activator receptor gamma (PPARγ) has been reported to cause neuroprotection in animal models of stroke. The present study was performed to explore the neuroprotective mechanisms of FNS treatment in experimental stroke. METHODOLOGY: Adult male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats preconditioned through transfection with either PPARγ-small hairpin RNA (shRNA) or lentiviral vector without shRNA and surgically subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion and reperfusi

Spontaneous Fracture of the Humerus 18 Months after a High Voltage Electrical Injury: A Case Report.

Electrical burn occurs when a current passes through the body, interfering with the function of internal organs or sometimes burning tissue. Four major mechanisms of electricity-induced injuries are presently known. In this case report, a 29-year-old farmer sustained electrical trauma to extremities from a high voltage transformer, followed by a major, deep burn wound on upper lateral aspect of his left arm, and a deep burn wound over the left medial ankle. After a few months, the patient developed left arm fracture with complete separation of two segments, and plantar wound with purulent disc

Electrical stimulation accelerates nerve regeneration and functional recovery in delayed peripheral nerve injury in rats.

The present study aims to investigate the potential of brief electrical stimulation (ES; 3 V, 20 Hz, 20 min) in improving functional recovery in delayed nerve injury repair (DNIR). The sciatic nerve of Sprague Dawley rats was transected, and the repair of nerve injury was delayed for different time durations (2, 4, 12 and 24 weeks). Brief depolarizing ES was applied to the proximal nerve stump when the transected nerve stumps were bridged with a hollow nerve conduit (5 mm in length) after delayed periods. We found that the diameter and number of regenerated axons, the thickness of myelin sheat

Indirect electrical injuries from capacitive coupling: a rarely mentioned electrosurgical complication in monopolar laparoscopy.

Electrothermal injuries in monopolar laparoscopy may derive indirectly, but rarely, from capacitive coupling releasing stray currents into neighboring non-targeted tissues, with intact instrument insulation. Since 2007, seven episodes of indirect electrosurgical damage to non-targeted tissues have been observed in our gynecological practice, including incidental coagulative necrosis of appendix, Fallopian tube, cystic pedicle, and broad ligament stump. Such an electrical response becomes greater where there is increased contact with the cystic wall (cysts <3 cm in diameter). Appropriate measur

Comparison of current perception threshold electrical testing to clinical sensory testing for lingual nerve injuries.

PURPOSE: We performed a retrospective study of lingual nerve injury assessment comparing the techniques of current perception threshold testing versus clinical sensory testing. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We designed and implemented a cross-sectional study and enrolled a patient sample with lingual nerve injuries presenting for treatment to the principal investigator. The predictor variables were clinical sensory testing modalities (ie, temperature, nocioception, vibration, 2-point discrimination, brush stroke, and von Frey monofilament perception). The primary outcome variable was the electrical c

Epileptic seizure, cataract, and tongue atrophy during the 8 years after electrical brain injury.

As a delayed neurologic complication following a high-voltage electrical injury, motor neuron disease-like spinal cord injury has often been reported. However, epileptic seizure as a delayed complication of electrical brain injury has not been reported. We report a 32-year-old man, who developed epilepsy 8 years after electrical brain injury. His electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings showed focus on the right side, in which the electrical current passed during the accident eight years earlier. He experienced cataract during these 8 years. On examination, the right side of his tongue was found

Effects of electrical stimulation-induced leg training on skeletal muscle adaptability in spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease is associated with abnormalities in the levels of some brain metabolites, including decreases in N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA) and increases in myo-inositol and choline levels. Cholinesterase inhibitors have proven modest effects on cognition in patients with mild or moderate Alzheimer's disease; however, there is little information on the effects of these drugs on metabolic parameters in the brain. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) provides a method of determining changes in such parameters. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of rivastigmine on metabolite levels i

The effect of participating in a functional electrical stimulation exercise program on affect in people with spinal cord injuries.

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a technology that is increasingly being used in the acute and post rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injuries. Though there has been considerable interest in the potential psychological effects of FES, little research has been done in this area. This study examined the effect of participation in an FES exercise program on affect in 37 persons with spinal cord injury. The effect of the subjects' expectations is also examined. Results indicate significant changes in negative affective status but no significant changes in positive affect. In part

Electrical stimulation of the sacral dermatomes in spinal cord injury: effect on rectal manometry and bowel emptying.

The impairment in defecation function that comes as a result of spinal cord injury may have a significant negative impact upon quality of life. Electrical stimulation (ES) of the somatic nervous system has been used to elicit autonomic reflexes in animals, before and after spinal cord transection. To determine whether ES might be used to promote bowel emptying, seven persons with recent spinal cord injury (SCI) and seven control subjects were studied. Electrical stimulation of the second sacral dermatome was applied during rectal manometry in both groups, and ES was added to the bowel programs

The mechanism and clinical research of vagus nerve electrical stimulation in the treatment of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), as a neuromodulation therapy, has shown promising prospects in the treatment of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI) following myocardial infarction (MI). MIRI can exacerbate secondary damage to post-ischemic myocardial tissue. VNS can alleviate MIRI by enhancing vagal nerve activity. In preclinical studies, VNS exerts cardioprotective effects through multi-target synergistic regulation: inhibiting inflammatory cascades through the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP) and vagus nerve-spleen pathway, improving mitochondrial function, resisting oxid

Nanogenerator Neuromodulation to Enable Locomotion Rehabilitation for Spinal Cord Injury via Epidural Electrical Stimulation.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe neurological disease, often accompanied by impaired lower limb motor function and muscle atrophy. Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) has been demonstrated promising for SCI therapy in ways of rehabilitation by facilitating the recovery of lower limb motor abilities. However, EES necessitates a considerable consumption of electrical energy and exhibits large individual differences in treatment. Nanogenerators (NGs) based on a novel power generation technology, are capable of transforming mechanical energy into electrical power. This mechanic-driven electr

Canagliflozin restores electrical properties and suppresses structural damage in isoproterenol-induced myocardial injury models.

Canagliflozin (Cana), a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor with additional affinity for SGLT1, has demonstrated cardioprotective effects. However, its role in modulating ventricular electrophysiology and structural remodeling under stress conditions remains insufficiently characterized. We have previously reported electrical and structural remodeling in a rat model of isoproterenol (ISP)-induced myocardial injury. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of Cana and its underlying mechanism in an ISP-induced myocardial injury model using Sprague Dawley rat hearts and

Electrical stimulation paradigms on muscle quality and bone mineral density after spinal cord injury.

UNLABELLED: The goal of the work was to determine the effects of altering muscle quality (peak torque and muscle CSA) via NMES-RT on bone mineral density (BMD) following application of FES-lower extremity cycling. Components of muscle quality were altered and attenuated the decline in BMD after SCI. INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injury (SCI) negatively impacts muscle quality and bone health. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation-resistance training (NMES-RT) has been shown to enhance muscle quality. It is unclear whether adding NMES-RT to functional electrical stimulation (FES)-lower extremity cyc

The effects of benzimidazole and electrical stimulation on peripheral nerve regeneration after short- and long-term injury.

This research investigated the effects of benzimidazole (BZ) and electrical stimulation (ES) on peripheral nerve regeneration after short- and long-term injury and assessed functional recovery by means of stereological, histological, and electrophysiological analyses. Fifty-four male albino Wistar rats were divided into nine groups of six animals each. No treatment or surgery was applied to the control (CONT) group. The sciatic nerve was crushed for 5 s in the short-term injury (STI) and for 60 s in the long-term injury (LTI) groups. In the STI + BZ group and the LTI + BZ group, the rats recei

The Orthotic Effect of Functional Electrical Stimulation on Reactive Stepping for People With Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) often face challenges initiating reactive steps, leading to an increased risk of falls. Reactive balance training (RBT) can improve balance control; however, it is difficult to participate in RBT without the ability to initiate a reactive step independently. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been used to facilitate participation in RBT. FES applied to the common fibular nerve (CFN) following iSCI initiates a flexor withdrawal response, promoting rapid hip and knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion, potentially aiding the

Neurophysiological Effect of Transcutaneous Electrical Spinal Cord Stimulation in Chronic Complete Spinal Cord Injury.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous electrical spinal cord stimulation combined with activity-based therapy (TESCS-ABT) holds promising potential for motor rehabilitation of spinal cord injury (SCI). However, its effectiveness in individuals with chronic complete SCI remains largely unexplored, despite recent evidence suggesting that many of these individuals exhibit signs of neurological incompleteness. This study was a prospective, single-arm, open-label trial that investigated the neurophysiological effects of TESCS-ABT in chronic complete SCI and assessed whether any changes translate into function
