Influence of a radiofrequency electromagnetic field on cardiovascular and hormonal parameters of the autonomic nervous system in healthy individuals.

The potential health risks of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) emitted by mobile phones are of considerable public interest. The present study investigated the hypothesis, based on the results of our previous study, that exposure to EMFs can increase sympathetic vasoconstrictor activity. Forty healthy young males and females underwent a single-blind, placebo-controlled protocol once on each of two different days. Each investigation included successive periods of placebo and EMF exposure, given in a randomized order. The exposure was implemented by a GSM-like signal (900 MHz, pulsed…

The preventive effect on bone loss of 50-Hz, 1-mT electromagnetic field in ovariectomized rats.

Osteoporosis is a common health problem, especially in the elderly and in women after menopause. Although there are some treatment methods, they impose serious side effects. Recently, the use of an electromagnetic field (EMF) has been a promising candidate for better treatment of osteoporosis. In the present study, we investigated the preventive effects of low-frequency (50 Hz), low-intensity (1 mT), and long-term (6 weeks) EMF on bone loss in ovariectomized rats. We used 18 female albino Wistar rats (8 unexposed and 10 exposed) to assess the effect of EMF. We examined the mineralization and t

Syrian hamster dermal cell immortalization is not enhanced by power line frequency electromagnetic field exposure.

Several epidemiological studies have suggested associations between exposure to residential power line frequency electromagnetic fields and childhood leukaemia, and between occupational exposure and adult leukaemia. A variety of in vitro studies have provided limited supporting evidence for the role of such exposures in cancer induction in the form of acknowledged cellular end points, such as enhanced mutation rate and cell proliferation, though the former is seen only with extremely high flux density exposure or with co-exposure to ionizing radiation. However, in vitro experiments on a scale …

Static and extremely low frequency electromagnetic field exposure: reported effects on the circadian production of melatonin.

The circadian rhythm of melatonin production (high melatonin levels at night and low during the day) in the mammalian pineal gland is modified by visible portions of the electromagnetic spectrum, i.e., light, and reportedly by extremely low frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields as well as by static magnetic field exposure. Both light and non-visible electromagnetic field exposure at night depress the conversion of serotonin (5HT) to melatonin within the pineal gland. Several reports over the last decade showed that the chronic exposure of rats to a 60 Hz electric field, over a range of field …

Effects of high-peak pulsed electromagnetic field on the degeneration and regeneration of the common peroneal nerve in rats.

Apart from preliminary notices of present work, previous reports of experimental and clinical trials of the effects of a high-peak pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) on degeneration and regeneration of peripheral nerves lacked statistical analysis. Therefore, we designed experiments with standardised operative, histological, cytological and morphometric techniques to assess the effect of PEMF on lesions of the common peroneal nerves in paired male rats matched for age, environmental conditions and level and type of lesion. One of two types of lesion was induced in the left common peroneal ner

Effects of non-ionizing electromagnetic fields on flora and fauna, Part 2 impacts: how species interact with natural and man-made EMF.

Ambient levels of nonionizing electromagnetic fields (EMF) have risen sharply in the last five decades to become a ubiquitous, continuous, biologically active environmental pollutant, even in rural and remote areas. Many species of flora and fauna, because of unique physiologies and habitats, are sensitive to exogenous EMF in ways that surpass human reactivity. This can lead to complex endogenous reactions that are highly variable, largely unseen, and a possible contributing factor in species extinctions, sometimes localized. Non-human magnetoreception mechanisms are explored. Numerous studies…

Environmental Pollution, Oxidative Stress and Thioretinaco Ozonide: Effects of Glyphosate, Fluoride and Electromagnetic Fields on Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Carcinogenesis, Atherogenesis and Aging.

Environmental pollutants, such as pesticides, herbicides, additives to food and water, and electromagnetic fields threaten public health by promotion of cancer, heart disease and chronic diseases of aging. Many of these pollutants cause adverse health outcomes by effects on mitochondrial function to produce oxidative stress through loss of the active site complex for oxidative phosphorylation, thioretinaco ozonide oxygen nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, from opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore. Glyphosate, fluoride, and electromagnetic fields are examples of c…

The effects of pulsed electromagnetic fields combined with a static magnetic intramedullary implant on the repair of bone defects: A preliminary study.

There is a basic consensus on the biological effects of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) on bone formation and bone reconstruction. PEMFs have been widely used in clinical treatment of osteoporosis, bone nonunion and delayed fracture healing. PEMFs is an intervention method of physiotherapy in vitro. In order to optimize the effect of PEMFs intervention, this study combined with the orthopedics clinic to construct a static magnetic intramedullary implant using NdFeB magnets as components. At the same time, it combines external-pulsed electromagnetic field to achieve locally targeted magne…

Pulsed electromagnetic fields modulate bone metabolism via RANKL/OPG and Wnt/β-catenin pathways in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis: A pilot study.

Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) have been proven to enhance in vitro and in vivo osteogenesis with unknown mechanism. Aim of our study was to explore whether RANKL/OPG and Wnt/β-Catenin pathways could be involved in bone response to PEMFs in a setting of postmenopausal osteoporotic women. Forty-three women (mean age 62.8 ± 4.5 yr.) were randomized into two groups. The PEMFs group received PEMFs treatment (50 min treatment session/day, 6 treatment sessions/week, for a total of 25 times), by wearing a specific gilet applied to the trunk and connected to the electromagnetic device (Biosalus…

Whole-body exposure to 2.45 GHz electromagnetic fields does not alter anxiety responses in rats: a plus-maze study including test validation.

In a first phase of this investigation, a validation of our elevated plus-maze apparatus was performed in male Sprague-Dawley rats by testing anxiety response at various ambient light intensities (200, 30, 10 and 2.5 lux), as well as the effects of diazepam treatment (0.5 and 1.0 mg/kg, i.p. at 30 lux). Anxiety responses were found to decrease with decreasing light intensity and to be attenuated by diazepam treatment. Subsequently, a separate set of rats was exposed to 2.45 GHz EMFs (2 micros pulse width, 500 pulses per second, whole-body and time averaged of SAR 0.6 W/kg +/-2 dB, brain-averag

Exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields and IARC carcinogen assessment: Risk of Bias preliminary literature assessment for 10 key characteristics of human carcinogens.

This is the first assessment of evidence needed to determine whether exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) exposures, below the levels recommended in the ICNIRP (2020) guidelines, can influence any of the ten key characteristics (KCs) of human carcinogens developed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). We define the 10 KCs and their relevance to carcinogenesis; review in vivo and in vitro studies relevant to the KCs; and conduct a risk of bias (RoB) analysis using 6 criteria. We did not include KC studies on genotoxicity or oxidative stress since Romeo…

Pulsed electromagnetic fields preconditioned extracellular vesicles derived from mesenchymal stromal cells prevents necroptosis of osteoblasts in osteonecrosis of the femoral head rats.

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a refractory orthopedic disease in which steroids may induce bone cell necroptosis. Extracellular vesicles derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BMSC-EVs) are recognized as novel therapies to improve ONFH. Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) increase the paracrine activity of BMSCs. Nonetheless, the effect and mechanism of PEMFs preconditioned BMSC-EVs (BMSC-EVsPEMFs) for treating ONFH are unclear. METHODS: The BMSC-EVsPEMFs with different magnetic amplitudes were incubated with dexamethasone-induced MC3T3-E1 cells and th…

The impact of electromagnetic fields generated by high-voltage power lines on the spatial arrangement of pike (Esox Lucius Linnaeus 1758) embryos.

Urbanization and technological advancements result in the dispersion of antropogenic electromagnetic fields (EMF) that can affect on ecosystems. Therefore, it is important to understand their impact on the environment. Aquatic ecosystems are subject to EMF as part of various electricity sources, e.g., high-voltage transmission lines (HVTL). We examined the impact of EMF generated by HVTL on the spatial arrangement and survival of pike (Esox lucius) embryos. Fertilized eggs were incubated under two HVTL configurations 110 kV and 220 kV compared with a control group devoid of anthropogenic EMF. …

Pulsed electromagnetic fields and platelet rich plasma alone and combined for the treatment of wear-mediated periprosthetic osteolysis: An in vivo study.

UNLABELLED: Wear-mediated osteolysis is a common complication occurring around implanted prosthesis, which ultimately leads to bone loss with mechanical instability and the need for surgical revision. At the moment, revision surgery is the only effective treatment. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) and platelet rich plasma (PRP), alone and in association, in a clinically relevant in vivo model of periprosthetic osteolysis. Titanium alloy pins were implanted intramedullary in distal femurs of male inbred rats and, after osseointegration, p…
