Effect of route familiarity on attentional resource allocation during real-world road driving.

Previous studies indicate that route familiarity can adversely affect drivers' attentional states. However, few studies have examined how route familiarity affects attentional resource allocation using physiological measures. We investigated the effect of route familiarity on attentional resource allocation by measuring physiological indices during real-world road driving. Participants (n = 10) drove a vehicle on public roads on the same route over six days. We analyzed the eye-fixation-related brain potentials (EFRPs), auditory-evoked potentials (AEPs), and eye-blink duration from the electro

Cerebellum-mediated trainability of eye and head movements for dynamic gazing.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether gaze stabilization exercises (GSEs) improve eye and head movements and whether low-frequency cerebellar repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) inhibits GSE trainability. METHODS: 25 healthy adults (real rTMS, n = 12; sham rTMS, n = 13) were recruited. Real or sham rTMS was performed for 15 min (1 Hz, 900 stimulations). The center of the butterfly coil was set 1 cm below the inion in the real rTMS. Following stimulation, 10 trials of 1 min of a GSE were conducted at 1 min intervals. In the GSE, the subjects were instructed to stand upright and hor

Pediatric polysomnography-A review of indications, technical aspects, and interpretation.

Polysomnography is an elaborate diagnostic test composed of numerous data-collecting sensors working concomitantly to aid in the evaluation of varied sleep disorders in all age groups. Polysomnography is the study of choice for the assessment of pediatric sleep-disordered breathing, including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, central apnea, and hypoventilation disorders, and is used to help determine treatment efficacy. Beyond the purview of snoring and breathing pauses, polysomnography can elucidate the etiology of hypersomnolence, when associated with a multiple sleep latency test, and abnor

Ocular myasthenia revisited: insights from pseudo-internuclear ophthalmoplegia.

Ocular myasthenia can mimic central disorders of eye movements. We compared horizontal saccades in two patients with myasthenia gravis who presented as pseudo-internuclear ophthalmoplegia (pseudo-INO), two patients with true INO due to multiple sclerosis (MS), and five healthy subjects. In myasthenics, peak velocity of horizontal saccades was similar to, or greater than, controls; in MS patients, adducting saccades were slower than controls. Differences between the peak velocity of abducting and adducting eyes for each saccade were similar to controls for myasthenic pseudo-INO, but greater tha

Electro-oculographic abnormality in eyes with uveal melanoma.

PURPOSE: To seek out correlations between preoperative electro-oculogram (EOG) recordings with different types of uveal melanomas, after surgery. METHODS: We analysed the EOG recordings of 120 patients with uveal melanomas, histologically verified, 100 in the choroid and 20 in the iris and ciliary body. The EOG data were correlated with the site, size and histological type of the tumor. RESULTS: In 100 eyes with choroidal melanoma the Arden Index (AI) was less than in fellow eyes (mean 126.6, SD +/- 23.8 and 202.9, SD +/- 47.0; p=0.01). The EOG values were not different with respect to the h

Neocortical and hippocampal electrical activities are similar in spontaneous and cholinergic-induced REM sleep.

Neocortical and hippocampal EEG power spectra obtained during REM-like sleep induced by unilateral carbachol microinjections (0.01 M, 0.02 M and 0.2 M; volume 20 nl) into the ventral part of the nucleus reticularis pontis oralis have been compared with EEG power spectra obtained during spontaneous REM sleep. Our findings indicate that neocortical and hippocampal electrical activities during the REM-like state generated by carbachol delivery in this pontine region mimic those present in spontaneous REM sleep.

Induction of visual imagery during NREM sleep.

In an attempt to induce eye movements (EMs) in non-rapid eye movement sleep, light and sound stimuli were presented to human subjects (at below-waking threshold) during stage 2 sleep. EMs were used as an indicator of ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) wave activity. When at least one concurrent EM in response to the stimuli was observed, the subjects were awakened and mentation reports collected. Compared to equivalent control periods with no stimulation, awakenings from the stage 2 stimulation condition showed a higher frequency of visual imagery reports, electroencephalogram alpha activity, and

An electrophysiological study on children and young adults with Alport's syndrome.

Alport's syndrome is characterised by progressive haematuric nephritis and high tone sensorineural hearing loss. Ocular signs are variable, the most consistent findings being anterior lenticonus and retinal flecks in the macula and mid peripheral areas. Previous electrophysiological studies on patients with Alport's syndrome have mostly been on adult patients undergoing haemodialysis, or after renal transplantation. A group of young patients with Alport's syndrome were studied to assess if early electrophysiological changes were detectable. A total of 20 patients (15 males and five females) be

Congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium associated with familial adenomatous polyposis.

PURPOSE: Multiple, bilateral areas of congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (CHRPE) have been described in association with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Histopathologic findings have suggested a generalized effect of the FAP gene on the RPE, which could impair the functional integrity of the RPE. The clinical, psychophysical, electrophysiologic, and fluorescein angiographic findings in CHRPE in subjects with FAP were assessed. METHODS: RPE function was assessed in 7 subjects with CHRPE and a family history of FAP. Four had documented FAP (mean age = 22.25 years) an

[Oculomotor and visual sensory changes in the neurologically lesioned child].

Pathological changes in the visual system are often present in children with neurological handicaps. Strabismus, refractive errors, amblyopia, optic atrophy are the more frequent findings. The ophthalmological evaluation in these children includes: eliciting of pupillary light reflex; occlusion test; cover-test; observation of symmetry of corneal light reflexes; retinoscopy and ophthalmoscopy. Strabismus is the most frequent alteration. The so-called "caotic" strabismus, with very variable angle of squint and abnormalities of the vertical movements, is peculiar in children with neurological ha

Effects of diazepam on behavior and dopamine-containing substantia nigra units in freely moving cats.

Administration of diazepam at doses that produced ataxia (5-10 mg/kg IP) significantly decreased the discharge rate of substantia-nigral dopamine-containing neurons by 28.1% in freely moving cats. Diazepam also altered the characteristic decremental bursting pattern of these neurons, producing a steady rhythmic discharge pattern. Similar results were obtained with another centrally acting muscle-relaxant drug, mephenesin. However, the peripherally acting muscle relaxant dantrolene did not produce these effects. These data suggest that diazepam and other centrally acting muscle relaxants may pr

Autosomal dominant peripheral preretinal deposits.

Abnormal yellow-white peripheral preretinal deposits are described as an autosomal dominant disorder in ten members of a large pedigree spanning three generations. The absence of any other major vitreoretinal abnormalities or retinal function disorders suggests that this is a benign disease; the nature and origin of the preretinal deposits is obscure.

Twenty-four-hour recording in REM-narcoleptics with special reference to nocturnal sleep disruption.

Twenty narcoleptic patients and ten age-matched normals were polygraphically monitored for 58 consecutive hours. All subjects were on regimented sleep (hours between 2230 and 0700). Group A (11 patients and 10 normals) had enforced wakefulness during the day whereas Group B (9 patients) were permitted to sleep (mean = 2 1/2 hr.). On day 2, all subjects were permitted to sleep for 15-min periods every 2 hr. In narcoloptics, sleep recordings demonstrated a reduction of sleep latency, an increase of stage 1, and a decrease in stages 3 and 4 compared to normals, but total REM time and percentage o

[Investigations on the vestibular recruitment (author's transl)].

Searching for some kind of vestibular recruitment that might be similar to the audiological recruitment as defined by Fowler, a caloric test was done at 44 degrees, 33 degrees, 30 degrees, 26 degrees, 17 degrees. The parameter of vestibular response was the maximum slow component speed, In total 36 Menière-patients were electronystagmographically examined. Out of the 36 only 16 were analyzed further for the question of vestibular recruitmen, who showed strictly unilateral lesions, who were attack-free since some months and who showed clear audiological recruitment at four different recruitment
