The aim of this study was to assess the anatomical variations, especially the anomalous muscles passing through Guyon's canal and the fibrous arch forming the piso-hamate hiatus, which may play a role in ulnar tunnel syndrome. We have also focused on the relation of these structures with specific concern to the ulnar nerve. Nineteen embalmed cadavers (37 hands and forearms) were dissected. A fibrous arch extending between the pisiform and the hook of the hamate was observed in 21 hands. In majority of the cases flexor digiti minimi muscle was found to originate only from this arch. An anomalou

Because of its proximity to the urethra, the anterior part of the arcus tendineus fasciae pelvis (ATFP) may be used in urethrosuspension procedures for urinary stress incontinence. In this study, 10 embalmed female cadaver hemipelves were dissected and their gross anatomy described. In females, the ATFP is a condensation of the endopelvic fascia. The anterior attachment of the ATFP is to the caudal inner surface of the body of the pubic bone at a site averaging 4 mm lateral to the pubic symphysis and covering an average area of 53 mm(2). Posteriorly, it attaches to the medial surface of the is

Twelve cervical spines from C2 to T1 were harvested from embalmed cadavers to study the location of the nerve root on plain radiographs. After removal of the soft tissue, the spinal nerves just lateral to the transverse processes were exposed and injected with lead oxide. Plain radiographs including anteroposterior (AP) and left and right oblique views were taken. Angular and linear measurements were performed directly on the radiographs. Results showed that the average frontal angle of the nerve root for all levels was 155 degrees on the AP view, 108 degrees on the foraminal side of the obliq

Supraclavicular nerve blocks are technically easy to perform, but may be associated with pneumothorax. The objective of this study is to define the parasagittal anatomy important to our modified technique of supraclavicular nerve block designed to decrease the incidence of pneumothorax and to determine whether this technique is anatomically sound. Two cadaver specimens were studied. One embalmed specimen was dissected to establish the relationship of the brachial plexus to our modified needle entry site. The neck and upper thorax of an unembalmed cadaver were frozen, and parasagittal serial se

The buccinator muscle plays an important role in mastication, swallowing, and facial expression, yet its detailed fiber architecture, particularly at the site where the parotid duct penetrates the muscle, remains insufficiently defined. This study aimed to elucidate the three-dimensional organization and layered structure of the buccinator muscle at the parotid duct penetration site. Fifty hemifaces from embalmed adult cadavers (22 Korean, 3 Caucasian) were examined by meticulous microdissection under a surgical microscope. The buccinator fibers surrounding the parotid duct consistently formed

The postglenoid foramen (PGF) is a rarely reported anatomical variant of the temporal bone, with limited data on its morphology, prevalence, and clinical relevance, particularly in non-European populations. This study aimed to investigate the anatomy and frequency of foramina located on the squamous part of the temporal bone, including the PGF, and to propose a classification system based on their anatomical positions. A total of 117 human skulls (234 sides), including both dried and Thiel-embalmed specimens, were examined through gross observation, cadaveric dissection, and computed tomograph

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine whether the administration of a modified thoracoabdominal nerves block through perichondrial approach (M-TAPA) could result in the blockade of the lateral cutaneous branches. This study focused on a newly discovered anatomical space/plane adjacent to the M-TAPA plane, which we termed "space between the endothoracic fascia, diaphragm, and costodiaphragmatic recess: SEDIC."
METHODS: Thirteen sides of nine formalin-embalmed cadavers were macroscopically dissected to investigate the anatomical spaces related to the effects of M-TAPA. Furthermore, ten adult v

INTRODUCTION: Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is characterized by the compression of the ulnar nerve in the cubital tunnel and can cause restrictions to the activities of daily living. Traditional treatment includes conservative methods and, in more severe cases, different types of surgery. In these cases, common side effects of surgery may limit the clinical success. A new alternative could be a minimally invasive Ultrasound-guided (US-guided) thread release of cubital tunnel retinaculum also known as the Osborne's ligament. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of ultrasound-gu

BACKGROUND: Facial proportions can be improved by means of chin augmentation in patients with a receding chin. The ascending mental artery is the main arterial supply to the top of the chin, and arterial occlusion of this artery can result in soft-tissue infarction. This study aims to measure the topographic anatomy of the ascending mental artery at the chin injection area, using a three-dimensional camera.
METHODS: Thirty-one embalmed cadaveric faces were dissected at the chin. The midline of the inferior margin of the mandibular protuberance was marked with a pin. A variation in size betwee

BACKGROUND: Several anatomic relationships between the ear and the temporo-mandibular joint have been proposed to account for the presence of tinnitus during temporo-mandibular disorders. Among the otomandibular structures, the discomallear ligament (DML) is interposed between the malleus and the retrodiscal capsular complex. The aim of present paper was to study through dissection the frequency and morphology of DML, to characterize its type of collagen, and to evaluate the DML on routine computed tomography (CT).
METHODS AND RESULTS: The study has been conducted on five un-embalmed adult ca

For 50 years now, sacrospinous ligament fixation (SSLF) has been used to treat pelvic organ prolapse consequent on altered integrity of the pelvic myofascial structures. It is usually performed vaginally, but it has recently been performed laparoscopically through either an anterior or a posterior approach, with the broad ligament as a landmark to differentiate the two. In the present study, these two laparoscopic approaches were assessed using Thiel-embalmed cadavers. The anterior and posterior approaches were compared in terms of the closest distance to anatomical structures at risk, includi

The auriculotemporal nerve is one of the many branches of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve. Of these, its superficial temporal branch has been most described. Although the parotid branches, secretomotor fibers to the parotid gland, are well known as the cause of Frey syndrome, there have been almost no descriptions of their anatomy. In this study, the authors dissected the parotid branches of the auriculotemporal nerve to elucidate their anatomy. A total of 10 sides from 7 adult and embalmed cadaver heads were used in this study. The specimens were derived from 3 males and 4 fem

INTRODUCTION Hemicolectomies are not tailored in right-sided colon cancer resections, despite significant variation in the incidence and origin of the right colic artery (RCA). Early evidence suggests that removal of the relevant lymphovascular package and associated cancer as part of complete mesocolic excision (CME), rather than the entire right colon, may produce better outcomes. Advancing laparoscopic techniques are making this possible, and so it is increasingly important to more precisely define the anatomy of the RCA. METHODS To demonstrate the incidence and variation of the RCA, 25 for

The flexor digitorum accessorius longus (FDAL), a variant leg muscle, can cause tarsal tunnel syndrome. This study was performed to classify the variants of the FDAL by dissection and to correlate the dissection results with clinical cases of tarsal tunnel syndrome caused by this muscle. Eighty lower limbs of embalmed Korean cadavers were dissected. MR images of two clinical cases of tarsal tunnel syndrome caused by the FDAL were correlated with the dissection results. The FDAL was observed in nine out of 80 specimens (11.3%) and it was classified into three types depending on its site of orig

The aim of this study was to clarify the topography of the longitudinal pharyngeal muscles and to relate the findings to pharyngeal muscular function. Forty-four specimens (22 right and 22 left sides) from embalmed Korean adult cadavers (13 males, 9 females; age range, 46-89 years; mean age, 69.2 years) were used in this study. The palatopharyngeus muscle originated from the palatine aponeurosis and the median part of the soft palate on oral aspect; it ran downward and lateralward, respectively. The palatopharyngeus muscle, which held the levator veli palatini, was divided into two bundles, me

The mentalis muscle (MT) is the only elevator of the lower lip and the chin, and it provides the major vertical support for the lower lip. However, there are few reports on the relationship between the MT and its surrounding muscles. The aim of this study was to clarify the morphology of the MT, especially in relation to the orbicularis oris muscle and the incisivus labii inferioris muscle (ILI), thereby providing data to understand the function of the MT in relation to the surrounding muscles. The MT was examined in 40 specimens of embalmed adult Korean cadavers. The medial fibers of both MTs

INTRODUCTION: The membranous superficial fascia (MSF) was described early in the 19th century, as was its role in the clinical sign of urethral disruption. Clinical signs of haemorrhage or leakage of pancreatic and biliary fluid into the retroperitoneum, which were described throughout the 20th century, all relied on circumscribed discolouration of the skin of the torso. The objective of this study was to relate the anatomy of the MSF to clinical signs of retroperitoneal catastrophe.
METHODS: The MSF was dissected in the torso of seven embalmed cadavers to note its extent and its attachments.

The coccygeal plexus is variably described in anatomy texts and has rarely been studied despite the idiopathic nature of coccydynia in up to one-third of affected patients. The plexus was therefore investigated using a combination of microdissection and histology. The distal sacrum and coccyx in continuity with ischiococcygeus were removed en bloc from 16 embalmed cadavers (mean age 78 ± 10 years, 7 females) with no local disease. Ten specimens underwent microdissection of the coccygeal plexus and the remaining six were examined histologically after staining with hematoxylin and eosin and S100

OBJECT: Grafting or nerve transfers to the axillary nerve have been performed using a deltopectoral approach and/or a posterior arm approach. In this report, the surgical anatomy of the axillary nerve was studied with the goal of repairing the nerve through an axillary access.
METHODS: The axillary nerve was bilaterally dissected in 10 embalmed cadavers to study its variations. Three patients with axillary nerve injuries then underwent surgical repair through an axillary access; the axillary nerve was repaired by transfer of the triceps long head motor branch.
RESULTS: At the lateral margin
