Analyzing the factors that contribute to the development of embryological classical type of bladder exstrophy.

Bladder exstrophy is a rare congenital condition of the pelvis, bladder, and lower abdomen that opens the bladder against the abdominal wall, produces aberrant growth, short penis, upward curvature during erection, wide penis, and undescended testes. Exstrophy affects 1/30,000 newborns. The bladder opens against the abdominal wall in bladder exstrophy, a rare genitourinary condition. This study is vital to provide appropriate therapy choices as a basis to improve patient outcomes. This study may explain bladder exstrophy and provide treatment. Epispadias, secretory placenta, cloacal exstrophy,

Embryological approach to philtral hair sparsity in bilateral cleft lip deformities.

OBJECTIVE: In bilateral cleft lip cases, surgeons have long known that the medial nasal prominence or prolabium is devoid of muscle. Despite cheiloplasty restoring orbicular muscle continuity, moustache hair growth is less developed on the philtral skin. We sought to understand this hair disparity. BASIC PROCEDURES: The authors conducted a comprehensive literature search using reference materials on the physiological and pathological development of the face in utero and the PubMed database using the keywords 'embryology', 'bilateral cleft lip' and 'hair'. MAIN RESULTS: In bilateral cleft lip…

The cerebrofacial metameric syndromes: An embryological review and proposal of a novel classification scheme.

The cerebrofacial metameric syndromes are a group of congenital syndromes that result in vascular malformations throughout specific anatomical distributions of the brain, cranium and face. Multiple reports of patients with high-flow or low-flow vascular malformations following a metameric distribution have supported this idea. There has been much advancement in understanding of segmental organization and cell migration since the concept of metameric vascular syndromes was first proposed. We aim to give an updated review of these embryological considerations and then propose a more detailed cla

New embryological and palaeontological evidence sheds light on the evolution of the archosauromorph ankle.

The homology and evolution of the archosaur ankle is a controversial topic that has been deeply studied using evidence from both extinct and extant taxa. In early stem archosaurs, the astragalus and calcaneum form the ancestral proximal tarsus and a single ossification composes the centrale series. In more recent stem archosaurs, the centrale is incorporated to the proximal row of tarsals laterally contacting the astragalus. This bone is subsequently lost as an independent ossification before the last common ancestor of birds and crocodilians, but the evolutionary fate of this element remains

Unifocal versus Multiple Ileal Neuroendocrine Tumors Location: An Embryological Origin.

INTRODUCTION: Small-intestinal neuroendocrine tumors (SI-NET) are situated preferentially within the ileum. The aim was to describe a potential difference in location between unifocal and multiple ileal-NET. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between December 2010 and December 2019, all consecutive patients who underwent resection in our European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society Center of Excellence, of at least 1 non-duodenal SI-NET, were retrospectively included. The main objective was to prove that multiple ileal-NET were mostly located on the left side of the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) axis (defined

Thirteen ribs and long gap oesophageal atresia: The embryological hypothesis for exploration.

CONTEXT: Since the gap between two atretic segments of oesophagus is a critical determinant of prognosis for oesophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF), the search for a surrogate non-invasive pre-operative marker of long gap atresia continues. AIMS: The purpose of the study was to compare the presence of normal and supernumerary ribs with length of EA and survival rates. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A prospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary care referral neonatal intensive care unit in North Karnataka, India, from January 2016 to June 2019. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Amo

Partial pancreatic resection along the embryological fusion plane - no longer a fantasy.

BACKGROUND: The embryological connection between the dorsal and ventral pancreatic regions divides the pancreas into two segments. This anatomical dependence allows segmental pancreatic resection through the embryological fusion plane (EFP). The advantages of limited pancreatic resection are the preservation of the natural continuity and function of the gastrointestinal tract and the avoidance of the metabolic and endocrine consequences of total resection of the pancreas and the duodenum. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two patients are described who underwent anatomicalsegmentectomyof the pancreatic

Accessory right spermatic ganglion: possible embryological basis and clinical significance.

The spermatic ganglia are collections of sympathetic neuron cell bodies located within the cords of the infrarenal aortic plexus, positioned at the origin of the testicular arteries in males. During routine dissection of the aortic plexus at our institution, one specimen exhibited a second (accessory) testicular artery on the right side that coursed retrocaval. Histology was used to confirm the presence of an accessory right spermatic ganglion at the base of the accessory retrocaval testicular artery. Interestingly, the accessory spermatic ganglion was also supplied by its own right lumbar spl

Embryological basilar apex disposition as a risk factor of basilar apex aneurysm.

The pathogenesis of basilar apex aneurysm (BAA) are still poorly understood. Embryologically, basilar apex anatomical disposition is formed by the fusion of both caudal internal carotid divisions on the midline. To compare basilar apex morphology by embryological classification among patients with BAAs, anterior circulation aneurysms (ACAs), and controls. Prospectively collected data of 47 consecutive patients with unruptured BAAs (42 females and five males), age- and gender-matched 47 patients with unruptured ACAs, and 47 controls without any aneurysms were analyzed. Based on embryology, basi…

Superior mesenteric origin of the proper hepatic artery: embryological and clinical implications.

The hepatic arteries are subject to a great deal of anatomical variation, potentially complicating hepatobiliary surgical procedures as well as general gastrointestinal procedures that involve foregut and midgut structures. We report a case of a rare variant of the proper hepatic artery discovered during dissection of an 84-year-old male cadaver. In this individual, the common hepatic artery was absent and the proper hepatic artery was replaced directly to the superior mesenteric artery. The gastroduodenal artery and the right inferior phrenic artery took origin from the celiac trunk. In addit

Unusual branching pattern of brachial artery - Embryological basis and clinicoanatomical insight.

Variations in the arterial pattern of upper limb are of colossal importance to the surgeons as they are liable to iatrogenic injuries. During routine dissection for undergraduate medical students, an anomaly of brachial artery was discovered. The brachial artery terminated at higher level into ulnar and radial artery. The common interosseus artery took origin arising from radial artery. The ulnar artery did not give any branches in the forearm. Both radial and ulnar artery displayed a superficial course in the forearm. The anatomical knowledge of these variations may be of great help for the c

Deciphering caudal embryonic defects: embryological analysis and reviewing literature data.

BACKGROUND: A number of syndromes÷associations involving the caudal region have been described in the literature. Each of them is characterized by a set of morphological features. Reports on difficulties in delineation and an ever-increasing constellation of defects in recent past call for a comprehensive study into the morphologic presentations and pathogenesis of caudal embryonic defects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present article describes a case of the OEIS complex--a combination of omphalocele, exstrophy of bladder, imperforate anus and spinal defects. Literature search was performed and

Abnormal bilateral drainage of testicular veins: embryological aspects and surgical application.

A combination of unusual bilateral drainage of the testicular veins observed in a male cadaver utilized for educational and research purposes is prescribed. In specific, the right testicular vein was terminated on the right renal vein at almost right angle, whereas the left testicular vein was bifurcated into a lateral component drained into the left renal vein and a medial component opened into the inferior vena cava close to its confluence with the left renal vein. Such a co-existence of bilateral testicular vein termination is very rarely presented in the literature. The main goal of this s

Variation of the posterior cerebral artery and its embryological explanation: a cadaveric study.

The posterior cerebral arteries are paired vessels that usually originate from the basilar artery at the level of the pontomesencephalic fissure and are joined by the posterior communicating artery to close the posterior portion of the Circle of Willis (circulus arteriosus cerebri). There is a considerable variation in the presence of the arterial segments of the circle of Willis. In the fetal type posterior cerebral artery there is an embryonic derivation of this vessel from the internal carotid artery. The irrigation of the posterior cerebral artery territory is thus completely dependent on

Tracheal dyskinesia associated with midline abnormality: embryological hypotheses and therapeutic implications.

Abnormalities of tracheal rigidity, which may lead to the collapse of the airway during expiration and consequent complications, characterize two groups of disorders: tracheomalacia (weakness of the anterior cartilaginous arc of the trachea) and tracheal dyskinesia (dysfunction of the posterior membranous trachea). Tracheal dyskinesia can either be isolated or associated with a more complex syndrome of malformations: esophageal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula and laryngotracheal cleft. Although our knowledge of the embryological development of the tracheoesophageal axis remains limited, the
