Seeking help, doing gender: Gender differences in facilitators of psychotherapy use-A qualitative study.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines how individuals "do gender" in their help-seeking for psychotherapy, focusing on the facilitators that support entry into treatment and the ways these are articulated by women and men. DESIGN: A qualitative study design was adopted, guided by the theoretical framework of doing gender and complemented by a mixed-methods component. METHODS: Narratives from 43 psychotherapy patients who identified as female or male were analysed using qualitative content analysis. This was supplemented by a word count analysis. RESULTS: Women often relied on female social and pr

Qualitative investigation of the speech-language therapy experiences of individuals who covertly stutter.

PURPOSE: Individuals who covertly stutter have a unique experience of stuttering that involves concealing the core behaviors of stuttering (e.g., repetitions, prolongations, and blocks). From the listener's perspective, covert stuttering results in minimum typical, overt stuttering behaviors. However, from the speaker's perspective, covert stuttering often increases the cognitive and emotional impact of stuttering. This study explores the speech-language therapy experiences of individuals who covertly stutter in order to improve treatment recommendations and best practice. METHODS: This inves

[What Did You Like About the Therapy? - A Qualitative Study on the Evaluation of Mentalization-Based Treatment for Adolescents with Conduct Disorder].

Psychotherapeutic treatment for adolescents with conduct disorder (CD) is considered difficult for various reasons. On the one hand, patients frequently lack psychological strain, and striving for autonomy is part of typical adolescent development. On the other hand, therapists can react aversively to delinquent and violent behavior, and insufficient psychological models explaining aetiology and maintenance of symptoms can impede treatment of adolescents with CD. Mentalization-Based Therapy for adolescents with CD (MBT-CD) was developed with the aim of addressing these difficulties and improvi

Overview of the Mechanistic Potential of Serotonin Reuptake Transporters in Depression.

Depression is considered to be one of the most common psychiatric disorders that affect millions of people, despite a large amount of unrecorded data. This disorder has been associated with feelings of hopelessness, sleep disturbances, and even suicidal thoughts. However, the serotonin hypothesis emerged in the 1960s, suggesting that serotonin was one of the key neurotransmitters associated with depression by regulating mood, emotion, and cognitive effects. The serotonin reuptake transporter (SERT) plays a vital role in maintaining homeostasis by facilitating the reuptake of synaptic serotonin

Does mental health coaching improve efficacy of transcranial magnetic stimulation for major depression? A pilot randomized controlled trial and benchmarking study.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is common and burdensome. Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is recommended for individuals who do not respond to first-line treatments. Coach-supported digital mental health programs are scalable strategies for delivering therapeutic content. This randomized controlled trial tested whether digital mental health programs bolster rTMS for MDD. N = 36 depressed adults completed a six-week course of rTMS. Of this group, n = 18 were randomized to digital cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT with Coaching), and n = 18 were randomized to digital narrati

Disrupted self-referential processing and empathy-based interventions in mental disorders: neural mechanisms, cognitive biases, and therapeutic integration.

Self-referential processing (SRP), the mental activity of linking experiences and stimuli to the self, is fundamental to shaping identity, regulating affect, and navigating complex social environments. Disruptions in SRP are increasingly recognized as a transdiagnostic hallmark across psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia spectrum disorders, major depressive disorder, and anxiety disorders. Such disruptions often manifest as distorted self-perception, negative cognitive-affective biases, and dysfunctional connectivity within key neural networks, particularly the default mode network (

Toward Integrated Treatment for Co-Occurring Borderline Personality Disorder and Eating Disorders: A Clinician Perspective.

OBJECTIVE: It is common practice in Australia for co-occurring borderline personality disorder (BPD) and eating disorders (ED) to be treated separately. The objective of this research was to review features these disorders share, evidence-based approaches used for treating these disorders in isolation, clinicians' experiences of delivering treatment for co-occurring BPD and ED, and finally to explore integrated approaches to treating this dual diagnosis. METHOD: A qualitative approach was used to examine interview transcripts of 10 clinicians employed at specialist outpatient services for sev

Reduced reward responsiveness and depression vulnerability: Consideration of social contexts and implications for intervention.

Depression is a prevalent, heterogeneous, and debilitating disorder that often emerges in adolescence, and there is a need to better understand vulnerability processes to inform more targeted intervention efforts. Psychophysiological methods, like event-related potentials (ERPs), can offer unique insights into the cognitive and emotional processes underlying depression vulnerability. I review my and others' research examining ERP measures of reward responsiveness in youth depression and present a conceptual model of the development of low reward responsiveness, its role in depression vulnerabi

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for residual depressive symptoms and relapse prophylaxis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The article reviews the recent evidence for mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) for patients with residual depressive symptoms or in remitted patients at increased risk for relapse. RECENT FINDINGS: Randomized controlled trials have shifted focus from comparing MBCT with treatment-as-usual to comparing MBCT against interventions. These studies have provided evidence for the efficacy of MBCT on par with maintenance antidepressant pharmacotherapy and leading to a relative reduction of risk on the order of 30-40%. Perhaps fuelled by these data, recent efforts have focus

Targeting binge eating through components of dialectical behavior therapy: preliminary outcomes for individually supported diary card self-monitoring versus group-based DBT.

The current study examined two condensed adaptations of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for binge eating. Women with full- or sub-threshold variants of either binge eating disorder or bulimia nervosa were randomly assigned to individually supported self-monitoring using adapted DBT diary cards (DC) or group-based DBT, each 15 sessions over 16 weeks. DC sessions focused on problem-solving diary card completion issues, praising diary card completion, and supporting nonjudgmental awareness of eating-related habits and urges, but not formally teaching DBT skills. Group-based DBT included eating

Tobacco use and gambling disorder: Associations with clinical characteristics, and treatment outcome.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Gambling disorder (GD) usually co-occurs with other addictive behaviors. Given shared neurobiological underpinnings, particularly involving dopaminergic pathways, and behavioral similarities such as high reward sensitivity, investigating the link between GD and tobacco use is warranted. Therefore, the present study explored how daily smoking use relates to clinical, personality, and psychopathological profiles, as well as its potential association with treatment outcomes. METHODS: Our sample included 455 individuals with GD, who completed clinical, personality, psychopath

Borderline personality disorder in East Asian adolescents: a comprehensive review of research on assessment, etiology, and treatment.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder marked by instability in affect, impulse control, interpersonal relationships, and behaviors. Its symptoms typically appear during adolescence and may predict adverse long-term outcomes. In East Asia, research focusing on this population is growing. This review aims to comprehensively summarize these findings to provide an overall profile of adolescents with BPD in East Asia. Studies show the prevalence of BPD among East Asian adolescents ranges from 2% to 14%, depending on the assessment instruments and the study population. Se

Reattribution of Auditory Hallucinations Throughout Avatar Therapy: A Case Series.

Background and Clinical Significance: Avatar Therapy (AT) for individuals with treatment-resistant auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) in schizophrenia aims to address emotional responses, beliefs about voices, self-perception, and coping strategies. This study focuses on three participants who, during AT, shifted their belief about the origin of their most distressing voice from an external source to a self-generated one. Case Presentation: The objective of this study was to explore the evolution of the reattribution of the participants' most distressing voice to oneself during AT and the p

A Unified Approach to Facial Contours and Volume Correction: The Role of the Cheek and the Chin.

BACKGROUND: Facial proportions and contours influence perceptions of beauty and youthfulness. In particular, the shape and definition of the midface and lower face impact the overall appearance of the face. METHODS: This review provides anatomical evidence to support a holistic approach to facial analysis and rejuvenation that starts with assessment and treatment of the midface and lower face to create an aesthetically desirable facial balance. RESULTS: The cheek and chin can be considered "anchors" or starting points within full-face treatment because of the noticeable impact of their treat

5-HT Receptors and the Development of New Antidepressants.

Serotonin modulates several physiological and cognitive pathways throughout the human body that affect emotions, memory, sleep, and thermal regulation. The complex nature of the serotonergic system and interactions with other neurochemical systems indicate that the development of depression may be mediated by various pathomechanisms, the common denominator of which is undoubtedly the disturbed transmission in central 5-HT synapses. Therefore, the deliberate pharmacological modulation of serotonergic transmission in the brain seems to be one of the most appropriate strategies for the search for

Managing vascular compromise of hand and digit replantation following traumatic amputation.

Hands are anatomically complex and have great social, physical and emotional importance. Hand or digit replantation following traumatic partial or complete amputation is a complex injury for nursing staff to understand and manage. The absence of clear guidance, combined with a lack of consensus in the literature gives rise to ambiguity and insufficient understanding of appropriate and effective management. This article aims to outline nursing care of the patient in the first few days following hand or digit reattachment, particularly focusing on the recognition and management of arterial and v

[Gilles-de-la-Tourette syndrome].

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome, a combination of multiple chronic tics and vocalizations, usually first occurring during childhood, is described in its history, symptomatology, genetics, etiology and therapy. Traditionally TS has been viewed either as an organic or as a psychogenic disorder. We propose an integrative concept combining both aspects. During a vulnerable phase in childhood a hypersensitivity of dopamine 2-receptors, induced by gene defects or perinatal trauma, leads to a lack of suppression of subcortical programs which discharge as tics. Tics are modified by multiple psycholog

Tremor in Parkinson's Disease.

Tremor is one of the most visible and distressing symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), ranking high among patients' most bothersome features. While levodopa is the most effective pharmacological therapy, approximately half of patients report insufficient tremor control, and refractory tremor remains a major therapeutic challenge. The psychosocial impact of tremor is profound: its visibility leads to embarrassment, stigma, and emotional distress, while its interference with daily activities and professional life compounds disability. Prevalence studies suggest that nearly all individuals with

Mental health service use by African American women: exploration of subpopulation differences.

Studies focusing on mental health service use have consistently viewed African American women as a homogeneous population, and very few studies have examined subgroup differences. However, important differences exist both within and between groups in lifestyle, stressors, type and availability of support resources, societal interactions, and risk-taking behaviors. This study examined rates and patterns of mental health service use by African American lesbian women and a matched sample of heterosexual women. Results suggest both similarities and differences in factors associated with use of ser

Multiple perspectives and dialogue in understanding experiences of living with eating disorders: Two narratives-four unpackings.

BACKGROUND: This is a response to Conti et al.'s article, "Listening in the dark: why we need stories of people living with severe and enduring anorexia nervosa" (published in JED, 2016), and its call for relational metaphors and a relational approach to supplement the traditional medical/psychological diagnostic language used to describe the life experiences and complex emotions of people affected by an eating disorder. METHODS: Four authors with different backgrounds unpack two narratives, 'The Prima Donna with the Green Dress' and 'Breaking down the Wall', both narrated during fieldwork in
