Validation of Lam assessment of employment readiness (C-LASER) for Chinese injured workers.

INTRODUCTION: The Stage-of-Change Model offers a theoretical framework for understanding people's intention to change. The Lam Assessment of Stages of Employment Readiness (LASER) was developed to measure one's psychological readiness to return to work after an extended period of unemployment due to disability. METHOD: The present study aimed to validate the Chinese version of LASER using a sample of Chinese industrial injured workers. Ninety subjects with previous history of work-related injuries participated in the study. RESULTS: Principal component analysis revealed a two-factor solution

Long-term botulinum toxin treatment increases employment rate in patients with cervical dystonia.

We examined the impact of cervical dystonia (CD) and long-term botulinum toxin (BTX) treatment on employment status. Data on employment status at onset of CD, at initiation of BTX treatment, and at evaluation of long-term treatment were obtained from 62 CD patients aged 31-66 years (median, 53 years; 61% females) who had been treated for a median of 5 years (range, 1.5-10 years). The employment rate fell from 84% at the onset of CD to 47% before initiation of BTX treatment. With long-term BTX treatment, 72% of those who worked at the initiation of treatment stayed employed, and 67% of those on

A case study of employment case management with chronically unemployed methadone maintained clients.

Employment interventions implemented in drug treatment programs have been marginally successful, but few interventions have been found to address the needs of chronically unemployed clients. Employment case management (ECM) is a comprehensive employment intervention strategy designed to motivate chronically unemployed persons to engage in work, assist in job placement, and provide post employment support through workforce integration, while maintaining progress in drug treatment. This clinical case study reports on a convenience sample of 10 chronically unemployed methadone maintained clients

Identifying alterable patterns in employment success for highly successful adults with learning disabilities.

Adults with learning disabilities were studied to ascertain the patterns of successful functioning that promoted high levels of vocational success. This area of research has been neglected in the developing research base on adults with learning disabilities. In this study of 46 highly successful and 25 moderately successful adults with learning disabilities using ethnographic interviews, it was found that the overriding theme was control and that control was sought through the pursuit of two sets of themes--internal decisions and external manifestations. These themes transcended the entire sam

Supported employment and compensatory strategies for enhancing vocational outcome following traumatic brain injury.

This paper describes two approaches to improving the employment prospects of those suffering from head injury. It is noted that unemployment within the first 7 years post-head injury is as high as 70% and that this contributes to the long-term difficulties faced by the head-injured and their families. A 'supportive' approach to employment involving the use of job coordinators or job coaches is described and a number of 'compensatory' strategies described. These two approaches are compatible and are derived from the individual needs of the head injured person in relation to retaining or seeking

Cumulative (dis)advantage, employment turbulence and health: evidence from the German LifE study.

This study uses longitudinal data from Germany to examine how socioeconomic position across the life course and employment stability are associated with self-rated health (SRH) in mid-adulthood, and whether employment stability compensates for cumulative disadvantage. While previous research has already sufficiently documented links between socioeconomic position in childhood and various health outcomes, long-term mechanisms across life courses remain less understood. To address this gap, the study adopts a life-course perspective that captures the accumulation of socioeconomic positions and e

Partners' Long Work Hours and Changes in New Parents' Employment Over 40 Years.

OBJECTIVE: This paper examines employment responses to partners' long work hours among new mothers and fathers and asks how gendered couple dynamics at the transition to parenthood have changed over four decades. BACKGROUND: Mothers are more responsive than fathers to institutional constraints on managing demands at home, and evidence is mixed on the extent to which couple dynamics have become more egalitarian over time. The current study extends research on the incompatibility of long work hours and motherhood, drawing on a couple perspective to assess the moderating role of partners' long w

Relationships between combat injury, pain, mobility and post-service employment: the ADVANCE study.

OBJECTIVES: Over 600 UK Armed Forces personnel and civilians were seriously injured in the conflict in Afghanistan. We examined whether combat injury, and limb loss specifically, reduced the likelihood of employment after leaving the UK Armed Forces and to what extent this was mediated by pain and mobility. METHODS: Combat-injured participants who were aeromedically evacuated to a UK hospital while on deployment to Afghanistan and subsequently left the UK Armed Forces (n=406) and a comparison group of uninjured personnel who had left the military (n=107) were drawn from an existing cohort (th

Meaningful Employment Among Veterans with Co-Occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders.

Objective: To examine associations between employment-based self-regulatory processes and meaningful employment attainment among veterans with co-occurring conditions. Methods: A survey was administered to a national Qualtrics panel of 534 employed veterans self-reporting mental health and substance use conditions. We tested whether career exploration, goal clarity, job-searching skills, and self-regulation skills explained unique variance in meaningful employment beyond other relevant predictors: mental health symptoms, alcohol and drug use severity, economic constraints, marginalization, job

Adverse childhood experiences and adult employment outcomes: Unpacking mechanisms across the life course.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are increasingly recognized as determinants of long-term health and development, yet their effects on employment outcomes in adulthood remain understudied. This study examines the association between ACEs during adolescence and two employment outcomes in adulthood: unemployment status and precarious employment. Based on a life course framework, we also explored five potential mediators: educational attainment, locus of control, incarceration, depressive symptoms, and self-rated health. Data were drawn from three waves (Waves I, IV, and V) of the National Lo

Employment, income, and sleep in South Africa: An actor-partner interdependence model approach.

OBJECTIVE: We analyze the relationship between employment status, income, and sleep in South Africa to address two research questions: (1) How does employment status influence the sleep quantity of the individual and their partner? (2) How does income impact the sleep quantity of the individual and their partner? METHOD: Using data from 1600 Black African couples in the South African Time Use Study, we employ the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model to investigate the relationship between employment status, income, and sleep in couples. We categorize nighttime sleep into three categories: reco

Employment interventions to assist people who experience borderline personality disorder: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Employment is an important social determinant of health and is associated with positive health outcomes. However, individuals who have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) are significantly underrepresented in the workforce. Whilst there is an array of evidence based therapeutic interventions, there remains a gap in knowledge regarding the most effective ways to enhance employment outcomes for people with a diagnosis of BPD. AIM: To explore employment interventions for people with BPD, map the available evidence and identify key concepts and knowledge gaps. M

Child Sexual Abuse and Employment Earnings in Adulthood: A Prospective Canadian Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Child sexual abuse remains a worldwide concern with devastating consequences on an individual's life. This longitudinal study investigates the associations between child sexual abuse (official reports versus retrospective self-reports) and subgroups by perpetrator identity (intrafamilial and extrafamilial), severity (penetration/attempted penetration, fondling/touching, noncontact), and chronicity (single, multiple episodes) and employment earnings in adulthood in a cohort followed for over 30 years. METHODS: The Quebec Longitudinal Study of Kindergarten Children database was li

Abstinence-contingent wage supplements to promote drug abstinence and employment: Post-intervention outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorder, unemployment, and poverty are interrelated problems that have not been addressed adequately by existing interventions. This study evaluated post-intervention effects of abstinence-contingent wage supplements on drug abstinence and employment. METHODS: Unemployed adults enrolled in opioid agonist treatment were randomly assigned to an abstinence-contingent wage supplement group (n = 44) or a usual care control group (n = 47). All participants could work with an employment specialist throughout a 12-month intervention period. Those in the abstinence-contingen

Individualized Placement and Support Supported Employment for Justice-involved Homeless and Unemployed Veterans.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is a significant issue affecting the general US population. Two subsets of the population overrepresented in the US homeless population are justice involved individuals and Veterans. However, relatively little research has addressed alleviating homelessness in justice-involved Veterans (JIV). One direction for addressing homelessness in this population is facilitating employment. OBJECTIVE: This study examined differences in housing and employment outcomes between homeless JIV enrolled in 2 different vocational rehabilitation conditions. METHODS: This study evaluates

Effects of increased body mass index on employment status: a Mendelian randomisation study.

BACKGROUND: The obesity epidemic may have substantial implications for the global workforce, including causal effects on employment, but clear evidence is lacking. Obesity may prevent people from being in paid work through poor health or through social discrimination. We studied genetic variants robustly associated with body mass index (BMI) to investigate its causal effects on employment. DATASET/METHODS: White UK ethnicity participants of working age (men 40-64 years, women 40-59 years), with suitable genetic data were selected in the UK Biobank study (N = 230,791). Employment status was ca

Self-employment and eudaimonic well-being: Energized by meaning, enabled by societal legitimacy.

This study investigates why and where self-employment is related to higher levels of eudaimonic well-being. We focus on meaningfulness as an important eudaimonic process and subjective vitality as a eudaimonic well-being outcome that is central to entrepreneurs' proactivity. Building on self-determination theory, we posit that self-employment, relative to wage-employment, is a more self-determined and volitional career choice, which enhances the experience of meaningfulness at work and perceptions of work autonomy. In a multi-level study of 22,002 individuals and 16 European countries, meaning

Predictors of long-term employment among patients with cystic fibrosis undergoing lung transplantation.

AIMS OF THE STUDY: Lung transplantation is an established therapy in selected patients with advanced cystic fibrosis lung disease. Resumption of employment after lung transplantation is generally supported. In Switzerland, there are no data on long-term employment in people with cystic fibrosis undergoing lung transplantation. METHODS: In a single-centre, cross-sectional study at a Swiss university hospital, clinical data from lung transplant recipients with cystic fibrosis, covering the transplantation period from January 1996 to December 2016, were analysed retrospectively. The potential in

Chronic conditions as predictors of later life disability employment exit: a gendered analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Increasing life expectancy has led governments to implement reforms aimed at delaying retirement. Chronic conditions are an important barrier to this given their association with pain, functional limitations, depression and ultimately lower life expectancy. Chronic diseases are gendered in terms of these characteristics, as well as their population prevalence. I examined the extent to which gender moderates the extent to which different chronic conditions lead to disability employment exit, the proportion of exits they account for and key mediators in this process. METHODS: Data f
