Pathological features of primary cardiac myxoid tumour in dogs: a review of 11 cases (2002-2022).

This report documents the pathological features of primary cardiac myxoid tumour (MT) in 11 dogs. Macroscopically, all the tumours were loca … plastic cells. Tumour embolization to the intrapulmonary arteries and/or tumour implantation on the endocardium of the right heart chambers was evident only in the four cases of irregular-surfaced MT.

A transmurally heterogeneous model of the ventricular tissue and its application for simulation of Brugada Syndrome.

We present a transmurally heterogeneous phe-nomenological model of ventricular tissue that is designed to reproduce the most important features of action potential prop-agation of endocardial, midmyocardial, and epicardial tissue. Our model consists of only 3 variables and 20 parameters. Therefore, it is highly computational efficient and easy to fit to experimental data. We exploited our myocyte model to simulate action potential propagation in a 3D slab of cardiac tissue both in healthy conditions and in presence of Brugada syndrome. The results show that our model can accurately reproduce t

Subendocardial hemorrhages in a case of complete avulsion of the heart.

We present a case of a 66-year-old man who died on the scene in a traffic accident. He was a car driver involved in a head-on collision with a bus. Autopsy performed 4 days after death showed multiple head, torso, and limb injuries, including complete avulsion of the heart from the great vessels and avulsion of both lungs from the tracheobronchial tree due to rapid deceleration. Gross examination of the heart was remarkable for patchy hemorrhages beneath the endocardium involving the left side of the interventricular septum and papillary muscles. Histological examination identified streaky sub…

Blood Stasis Imaging Predicts Cerebral Microembolism during Acute Myocardial Infarction.

BACKGROUND: Cardioembolic stroke is a major source of mortality and disability worldwide. The authors hypothesized that quantitative charact … asis were calculated, such as the average residence time and the size and ratio of contact with the endocardium of blood regions with long residence times. The incidence of brain microemboli (high-intensity transient signals [HITS]) was monitored using carotid Doppler ultrasound. RESULTS: HITS were detected in 0%, 50%, and 90% of the animals at baseline and …

Pathohistological changes in endomyocardial biopsy specimens in patients with myotonic dystrophy.

BACKGROUND: Endomyocardial biopsies in patients with myotonic dystrophy (MD) have, so far, shown changes such as myofibrillar degeneration, mitochondrial abnormalities, focal myocarditis, fibrosis and fatty infiltration of the myocardium and the conduction system. METHODS: This study presents the results of endomyocardial biopsy in 10 patients with MD. Endomyocardial biopsy was carried out using King's bioptome. RESULTS: In two patients with servere MD biopsy specimens showed changes compatible with border line myocarditis. In five patients with moderate to severe forms of MD fibrosis and fa

Use of an atrial loop to extend the duration of endocardial pacing in a neonate.

Use of an atrial loop has been proposed as a means of extending the longevity of endocardial pacing systems in small children who require ventricular pacing. A few reports have demonstrated the effectiveness of this method at reducing the number of interventions in infants and small children, but there is little reported experience in neonates. Permanent endocardial ventricular demand pacing was performed in a 3.4-kg neonate. The generator was placed in a prepectoral pocket and a redundant loop of lead was left in the atrium to cater for further growth. At 32 months he weighs 13.6 kg and the l

An 81-year-old female underwent mitral valve plasty and tricuspid annuloplasty using an artificial annulus for mitral valve insufficiency an … cal tissues which were partially organized white thrombi histologically. Damage to the right atrial endocardium during previous surgery could be the cause.

Double valve involvement: papillary fibroelastoma in a patient with severe mitral and aortic valve regurgitation.

Cardiac papillary fibroelastoma is a benign neoplasm that arises in the endocardium. It commonly presents as an incidental finding on transthoracic echocardiography or as emboli to the coronary, cerebral or pulmonary vasculature. Clinical manifestations described in the literature have generally been related to a sequelae of the associated embolic phenomenon of these lesions. Valve regurgitation is less common with papillary fibroelastoma and when found, it is not known to cause severe regurgitation requiring valve replacement. We report a case of papillary fibroelastoma in a patient with seve…

Endocardial fibroelastosis in a quarterhorse mare.

A 4-year-old crossbred Quarterhorse mare was submitted to the Clemson Veterinary Diagnostic Center for necropsy examination with a chronic history of inappetence, weight loss and lethargy. Prior to death the horse had developed mild diarrhoea and began showing evidence of colic. Necropsy examination revealed a markedly enlarged heart due predominantly to marked dilation of the right atrium, tortuous congested mesenteric blood vessels, marked ascites, pleural effusion and pulmonary oedema. Further examination of the heart showed the endocardium of the left side of the heart, including the mitra…

[Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae endocarditis].

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a thin, non-sporulating, gram-positive rod found worldwide and hosted by many domestic or savage animals, birds, fish, and shell/fish. It is extremely resistant in the external environment (soil, surface waters). Human infection is prevalently related to occupational exposure to sick or infected contaminated animals (anthropozoonosis). Frequently, the disease manifests itself as an acute cellulitis on the skin around the gate of entry. Systemic infection is uncommon, most commonly involving the endocardium or joints. We present a case of subacute E. rhusiopathia…

[What does the ECG reveal in infectious endocarditis?].

The electrocardiogram should be recorded at the very beginning of infectious endocarditis. It provides information on the origin and complications of possible organic disease (aortal stenosis--left ventricular hypertrophy). Moreover regular follow up of ECG tracings can reveal changes signalizing spread of the infection beyond the endocardium. Thus the conduction system may be affected--bundle branch block, atrioventricular blocks grade I to III, ectopic functional tachycardia, extrasystoles, myocardium--by development of typical ECG changes during myocardial infarction after embolization of t…

[Endocardial fibroelastosis: prenatal manifestation of aortic valve stenosis].

A diagnosis of fibroelastosis was made in a 33-week-old fetus, based on the echocardiographic features of a marked impairment of left ventricular contractility and hyperechogenicity of the endocardium. Fibroelastosis was associated with an aortic stenosis. There was no evidence of hydrops fetalis. Prenatal detection of this severe congenital heart disease allowed its early management in an intensive care unit. Heart failure due to closure of the ductus required the use of prostaglandin, then a surgical aortic valvulotomy was performed. There was no postoperative problem, and one year after sur…

Unexpected death in an adult dog with anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary trunk.

A two-year-old female miniature poodle died unexpectedly while romping with its owner. Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the left pulmonic sinus was discovered at necropsy. Histologically, the right ventricle was unremarkable, but multifocal to coalescing necrosis and fibrosis occurred in the myocardium and endocardium of the left ventricle. Medial hypertrophy of small muscular pulmonary arteries was observed in the lung. The cardiac lesions were similar to those of children with anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary trunk. Pulmonary hypertension, whic…
