In situ hybridization and immunohistochemical examinations of surgically resected specimens of human hyperplastic tonsils showed that macrophages in the germinal center and mast cells in the parafollicular and interfollicular areas expressed the transcript and protein of endothelin (ET)-1, but not ET-2 and ET-3. 1. Endothelin-1-like immunoreactivity (ET-1-LI) in cerebral cortex in postmortem brains obtained from patients with Alzheimer-type dementia (ATD) was measured by enzyme-immunoassay. 2. The ET-1-LI in the ATD brains was significantly increased in frontal and occipital cortex than those in the control brains and a significant correlation was found between frontal and temporal lobe of ATD brains. 3. These findings may explain the clinico-radiological results that the cerebral blood flow is decreased in ATD patients, the mechanism of which is still unknown.

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is common in the Arab population. Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is an a vasoconstrictor agent produced by the endothelin-1 gene (EDN1). Circulating ET-1 has been shown to be increased in T2DM. The current examined the association between the EDN1 rs5370 polymorphism and T2DM.
METHODS: The investigation was a case-control study and included 190 T2DM patients and 120 healthy subjects. Polymerase chain reaction was employed to determine rs5370 genotypes among the study participants.

The goal of this work was to study possible mechanisms underlying the potentiation of vasopressor response to serotonin observed in traumatic shock. Experiments with isolated aorta and mesenteric artery of the rat showed that vasoconstriction is caused by the activation of 5HT2A receptors. Agonists of 5HT1B, 5HT1D, 5HT2B, and 5HT4 receptors induced vasodilation. Agonists of 5HT1A receptors had a dual effect determined by interaction with alpha1-adrenergic receptors and 5HT1A receptors. Plasma membrane depolarization with 15 mM KCl increased the vasoconstrictive force in response to serotonin.
