Live trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica of low virulence (LV) were inoculated intraportally in hamsters. We used severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) mice to study resistance to invasive infection with Entamoeba histolytica. Seven of seven SCID mice developed liver abscesses when challenged intrahepatically with virulent HM1:IMSS strain E. histolytica trophozoites. Specimens obtained from 176 eight- to nineteen-year-old subjects were cultured for oral protozoa. This is a case report of a 36-year-old patient who developed an amebic liver abscess after a stay in the Sudan. He was first misdiagnosed as having pneumonia of the right lower lobe. The early formation of amebic cecal lesions in the gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus) was studied sequentially from 1 to 10 days post-inoculation. Of 110 subjects with clinical evidence of amebiasis, 15 (14%) were shown to be infected with Entamoeba histolytica. A rapid and simple assay for cytopathogenicity of axenically cultivated Entamoeba histolytica has been developed employing baby hamster kidney (BHK) or mouse 3T3 cells conventionally tissue cultured. Animal models have been utilized to study experimentally produced intestinal amebiasis. The guinea pig has been the animal of choice to study the mechanisms by which trophozoites of E. histolytica produce colonic lesions. The purpose of this study was to produce lesions in the colon of newborn guinea pigs by the injection of E. histolytica, HM-1 IMSS, strain grown axenically, and to characterize the early changes with the light and electron microscopes. A total of 35 guinea pigs, one to two days old, were inoculated into the cecum with one and a half million of trophozoites of E. histolytica.
