Seasonal variations of Triatoma dimidiata demography and Trypanosoma cruzi transmission within its multi-host community in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico: Insights from an integrative SIR eco-epidemiological modelling.

Chagas disease is a zoonotic disease affecting 7 million people worldwide, mostly in Latin America. The causative agent, Trypanosoma cruzi, is transmitted by triatomine vectors feeding on a high diversity of vertebrate species. To understand its complex transmission dynamics is critical to assess disease risk and potential control strategies. We expanded a previous SI model of T. cruzi transmission in a typical synanthropic and domesticated host community into a SIR model to account for the effect of seasonal variations in the stage-structured vector demography and for the within-host parasite

Prognostic impact of treatment modalities and examined lymph nodes count on survival in T3-4 esophageal cancer: a retrospective cohort and predictive modeling study from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal carcinoma (EC) is a malignancy of significant global burden, characterized by high incidence and mortality rates. The majority of patients are diagnosed with advanced disease. While surgery-based multimodality therapy is standard for resectable disease at this stage, the optimal strategy requires further definition. Concurrently, the impact of the number of examined lymph nodes (ELNs) on patient prognosis across different treatment modalities remains to be further explored. This study aimed to investigate the prognostic impacts of different treatment modalities and the c

Assessing the co-occurrence of psychopathology and resilience: Evidence for the dual-factor model of mental health using a data-driven approach from a multi-ethnic youth epidemiology study in south-east Asia.

BACKGROUND: While studies have consistently shown that resilience is a protective factor for youth psychopathology, less is known about the co-occurrence between resilience and youth psychopathology symptoms particularly in the south-east Asian context, based on the dual-factor model (DFM) of mental health. METHODS: Data was taken from the nationally-representative Youth Epidemiology and Resilience (YEAR) study conducted in Singapore. The analysis, which included 3336 Singapore youth aged 10 to 18, used a person-centered approach (i.e. Latent Profile Analysis) to identify subgroups of youths

The Potential Epidemiological Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Epidemic and the Cost-effectiveness of Linked, Opt-out HIV Testing: A Modeling Study in 6 US Cities.

BACKGROUND: Widespread viral and serological testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) may present a unique opportunity to also test for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. We estimated the potential impact of adding linked, opt-out HIV testing alongside SARS-CoV-2 testing on the HIV incidence and the cost-effectiveness of this strategy in 6 US cities. METHODS: Using a previously calibrated dynamic HIV transmission model, we constructed 3 sets of scenarios for each city: (1) sustained current levels of HIV-related treatment and prevention services (sta

Clinicopathological characteristics associated with intrapulmonary metastasis rather than single primary lung cancer at first diagnosis: a study based on the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database using Bayesian networks and structural equation modeling.

BACKGROUND: At initial lung cancer diagnosis, intrapulmonary metastasis (IPM) usually reflects more advanced intrathoracic disease than single primary lung cancer (SPLC). However, the clinical and pathological characteristics associated with presenting as IPM rather than SPLC, and with more extensive IPM patterns, are not well described. This study aimed to characterise how sociodemographic and tumor features at diagnosis are associated with IPM compared with SPLC and with different intrapulmonary metastatic patterns in a large population-based registry. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectiona

Epidemiological and economic effect of preference-driven HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis implementation for men who have sex with men and transgender women across 16 countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific region: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) coverage remains low among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women in the Asia-Pacific region, and discrete choice experiments identified user preferences for PrEP modalities. We aimed to evaluate the epidemiological and economic effects of implementing preference-driven PrEP among MSM and transgender women. METHODS: We used preference data from large-scale discrete choice experiments in 16 Asia-Pacific countries and territories during May and November, 2022, involving MSM at substantial risk (MSMSR), MSM at low risk (MSMLR), and trans

Modelling the Unidentified Abortion Burden from Four Infectious Pathogenic Microorganisms (Leptospira interrogans, Brucella abortus, Brucella ovis, and Chlamydia abortus) in Ewes Based on Artificial Neural Networks Approach: The Epidemiological Basis for a Control Policy.

UNLABELLED: Unidentified abortion, of which leptospirosis, brucellosis, and ovine enzootic abortion are important factors, is the main cause of disease spread between animals and humans in all agricultural systems in most developing countries. Although there are well-defined risk factors for these diseases, these characteristics do not represent the prevalence of the disease in different regions. This study predicts the unidentified abortion burden from multi-microorganisms in ewes based on an artificial neural networks approach and the GLM. METHODS: A two-stage cluster survey design was cond

Sun exposure and skin cancer, and the puzzle of cutaneous melanoma: A perspective on Fears et al. Mathematical models of age and ultraviolet effects on the incidence of skin cancer among whites in the United States. American Journal of Epidemiology 1977; 105: 420-427.

Sunlight has been known as an important cause of skin cancer since around the turn of the 20th Century. A 1977 landmark paper of US scientists Fears, Scotto, and Schneiderman advanced a novel hypothesis whereby cutaneous melanoma was primarily caused by intermittent sun exposure (i.e. periodic, brief episodes of exposure to high-intensity ultraviolet radiation) while the keratinocyte cancers, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, were primarily caused by progressive accumulation of sun exposure. With respect to cutaneous melanoma, this became known as the intermittent exposure hypo

A test for seasonality of events with a variable population at risk.

A statistical significance test to detect seasonality of epidemiological events is described. The method is similar to that of Edwards, but makes it possible to allow for an arbitrary pattern of variation in the population risk, and also for the unequal lengths of time sectors of a cycyle of seasons (e.g., months of a year). From the test it is possible to estimate the amplitude of seasonal variation and the time at which the maximum occurs in a postulated simple harmonic fluctuation; the adequacy of the description of the data by a curve of this kind may be evaluated using a goodness-of-fit t

Building the model: a review of input structures in extreme temperature-health.

BACKGROUND: The health impacts of extreme temperatures have been extensively studied through epidemiological models. However, limited attention has been paid to the specification of these models, particularly regarding input structure and model selection. Although exposure metrics and statistical techniques have evolved over time, a comprehensive synthesis of the variables included in these models, and the rationale behind their inclusion, is still lacking. This gap limits the comparability of studies and may compromise the robustness of temperature-health evidence. METHODS: We conducted a sy…

Dynamical analysis of scabies delayed epidemic model with second-order global stability.

Scabies is a highly transmitted skin disease that can affect people of all ages, especially children. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa are the regions most affected. For the study of the dynamics of scabies in the population, the mathematical model is designed with delay differential equations (DDEs) for four subpopulations: unvaccinated individuals, vaccinated individuals, infected individuals, and recovered individuals. The fundamental properties of the model, such as positivity, boundedness, existence, and uniqueness, are proved. The equili

Optimum study of fractional polio model with exponential decay kernel.

This study introduces a fractional order model to investigate the dynamics of polio disease spread, focusing on its significance, unique results, and conclusions. We emphasize the importance of understanding polio transmission dynamics and propose a novel approach using a fractional order model with an exponential decay kernel. Through rigorous analysis, including existence and stability assessment applying the Caputo Fabrizio fractional operator, we derive key insights into the disease dynamics. Our findings reveal distinct disease-free equilibrium (DFE) and endemic equilibrium (EE) points, s

Fractal and fractional SIS model for syphilis data.

This work studies the SIS model extended by fractional and fractal derivatives. We obtain explicit solutions for the standard and fractal formulations; for the fractional case, we study numerical solutions. As a real data example, we consider the Brazilian syphilis data from 2011 to 2021. We fit the data by considering the three variations of the model. Our fit suggests a recovery period of 11.6 days and a reproduction ratio (R0) equal to 6.5. By calculating the correlation coefficient (r) between the real data and the theoretical points, our results suggest that the fractal model presents a h

The Dynamic Model of Health Assets: a model development.

AIM: Epidemiological research on resistance and resilience can build on models of health developed in health promotion. Nevertheless, these models need to be adjusted to approaches currently employed in epidemiology; namely, included concepts should be easy to operationalize, and links between them should be simple enough to enable statistical modeling. In addition, these models should include both individual and environmental assets. The objective of this study is to consolidate the current knowledge on health assets, adjust them to epidemiological research needs, and propose a new model of h

Investigating a deterministic canonical model for tropical influenza.

Mechanistic infectious disease models are crucial for understanding the forces driving epidemics. Many epidemic models naturally produce equilibrium or stationary behaviors readily seen in epidemiological surveillance. However, respiratory viruses in tropical locations exhibit non-equilibrium behavior without consistent timing. This prevents standard models that commonly produce cycles and equilibria from describing their true dynamics. To evaluate deterministic model structures that can create asynchronous nonannual epidemic patterns seen with tropical influenza, we parameterized 30 variation

Optimal control of vaccination for an epidemic model with standard incidence rate.

A critical challenge for diseases spread is the development of effective prevention and control measures while minimizing costs, representing the foremost priority. Unfortunately, research in this crucial area remains inadequately explored. Consequently, this paper addresses the issue by leveraging an SI reaction-diffusion epidemic model incorporating a logistic birth rate and standard incidence rate. Employing vaccination as a control variable and integrating sparse optimal control theory, the study elucidates the achievement of epidemic prevention and control through the optimization of reso

Transmission dynamics of mumps epidemic model through stochastic analysis with delay effect.

Stochastic delayed modeling (stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with delay parameters) has a significant non-pharmaceutical intervention to control transmission dynamics of infectious diseases and its results are close to the reality of nature. Mumps is a viral disease specified with swollen jaws and inflated cheeks. Direct contact with saliva or respiratory drop less from the mouth is the major causes of its outbreak. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), still, 20% of young adult males develop mumps worldwide. No doubt, the vaccination of Mumps exists. The main cause is to

Modeling and sensitivity analysis of cholera dynamics under fuzzy imprecision.

This article presents a sensitivity analysis of the cholera transmission model, in which all parameters related to disease dynamics are considered as fuzzy numbers. Classical and system sensitivities of this fuzzy system have been analyzed to provide a real world approximation to cholera outbreaks. Graphical results indicate that the susceptible population is most sensitive to the new recruitment and disease-induced mortality rates of the infected and treated populations, whereas the infected population is found to be more sensitive to immune loss and disease transmission rate. The treated ind
