Whether there is an association between coeliac disease and epilepsy is uncertain. Recently, a syndrome of coeliac disease, occipital lobe epilepsy and cerebral calcification has been described, mostly in Italy. We measured the prevalence of coeliac disease in patients attending a seizure clinic, and investigated whether cerebral calcification occurred in patients with both coeliac disease and epilepsy. PURPOSE: To clarify the electroclinical manifestation of epileptic seizures and the evolution of epilepsy in patients with peroxisomal diseases.
METHODS: Retrospective review of the medical records and EEGs of 14 patients with peroxisomal diseases: seven with Zellweger syndrome (ZS), two with neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy (NALD), two with acyl-CoA oxidase deficiency (AOXD), two with bifunctional enzyme deficiency (BFED), and one with rhizomelic chondrodysplasia punctata (RCDP). The diagnoses were made by biochemical analysis and pathological examinations in our laboratory.

BACKGROUND: Only a few studies have reflected the incidence and causes of preoperative and postoperative seizures in meningiomas. This study concerned the incidence and types of preoperative epilepsy, and the predisposing factors for postoperative epilepsy in meningiomas.

In the past, epilepsy was usually treated with polytherapy, but with little knowledge as to the interactions and side-effects of the combinations of the anti-epileptic drugs used. Adverse events and sparse clinical knowledge led to monotherapy becoming the treatment regime of choice. A new generation of drugs, which are well-tolerated and have few or predictable interactions, have enabled the reassessment of polytherapy for the treatment of epilepsy. We report a family with nodular subependymal masses of heterotopic gray matter occurring in six members in four generations. Only female members of the family are affected, and there is a high rate of spontaneous abortion, consistent with X-linked dominant inheritance, and lack of viability in affected males. Both in this family and in sporadic cases of subependymal heterotopias there is a high frequency of convulsive disorders, suggesting that epilepsy may be the major clinical manifestation of this developmental defect.

Nine patients who had epileptic attacks while playing computer games were studied in the laboratory. Patients had an EEG recorded as well as their response to intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) at flash rates of 1-60 fps. Women with epilepsy who are of childbearing age need to understand what the risks of pregnancy are. These women have a 33% risk of increased seizures, a twofold increase in risk of hemorrhage, eclampsia, premature labor, and an increased need for cesarean sections. Babies born to women with epilepsy face a higher risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, prematurity, developmental delay, and major malformations. Seizure control should be obtained without clinical toxicity. Monotherapy reduces the risk of adverse outcomes.

Epilepsy is the most common neurological disease of females in reproductive age. Problems concerning contraception, reproduction, teratogenicity and antiepileptic therapy preceding and during pregnancy are discussed and recommendations made. We underline the advantages of a planned pregnancy with optimal adjustment of antiepileptic drug therapy and recommend prophylactic treatment with folic acid before and during, and with vitamin K towards the end of pregnancy.

A number of neurological disorders have been described in association with coeliac disease, including epilepsy. A review of 177 patients with coeliac disease failed to show an increased prevalence of epilepsy. This is contrary to the findings of other workers, and requires further investigation.
