Twenty-three patients with chronic or acute to chronic slip of the capital femoral epiphysis were treated using a modified trapezoid osteotomy of the femoral neck. All slips were greater than 60 degrees. After a follow-up period of 70 (54-93) months, the results were excellent or good in 18 hips, fair in 1, and poor in 4 hips. Avascular necrosis developed in 3 hips, and chondrolysis in 2.

The treatment of severe slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) remains problematic. Treatment of most mild and moderate cases has been simplified, not by our increasing knowledge of physiology or molecular genetics, but by the advances in radiographic imaging, metallurgy, and the development of cannulated screw technology. Most centers agree that the placement of a single pin or screw across the center of the epiphysis, stabilizing the unreduced epiphysis and keeping the implant out of the joint space until physeal closure is achieved, is the most efficient and effective method for the major

Twenty-one children and 26 hips with recent slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) underwent serial sonographic examination after operative fixation. The initial sonographic step at the anterior outline of physis decreased as a result of metaphyseal resorption. The first signs of resorption were evident 3 weeks after onset of symptoms; thereafter, the rate of resorption was 2 mm for each 3 weeks of follow-up. Finally, the physeal step was smooth and the anterior aspect of the femoral neck was straight. Sonography is accurate and free of projectional errors in assessment and classification of

Arthroscopy was performed in five hips with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) before pinning in situ. Arthroscopy disclosed erosion of acetabular cartilage in the anterosuperior region and damage to the posterolateral aspect of the acetabular labrum. Cartilaginous erosion and transverse cleft were identified on the anterior surface of the femoral head. These findings support the hypothesis that all pathomechanisms of SCFE are caused by traumatic factors. Arthroscopy for SCFE is also clinically useful in reducing hip pain. Arthroscopy performed simultaneously with pinning in situ can per

The technique for percutaneous in situ fixation of chronic slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is described. It is based on the anatomy of the slip. The technique utilizes a cannulated screw, which obviates the need for an incision and allows variation of the starting point of the screw depending on the degree of slippage.

Traumatic proximal femoral epiphysiolysis is a rare event. Early recognition and management are important to minimize sequelae. Evaluation should include plain roentgenograms and arthrography. Treatment should be conservative with open reduction reserved only for severe cases.

STUDY DESIGN: An anatomic and radiographic study of archeological skeletal remains from two genetically and geographically distinct groups with high occurrence rates of spondylolytic spondylolisthesis was done. Specimens were Aleut (27% known occurrence rate, n = 48) and Arikara Plains Indians (9% occurrence, n = 250+ of 1,062).
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate three radiographic parameters highly correlated with spondylolisthesis (pelvic incidence [PI], sacral table angle [STA], and lumbar index [LI]) in genetically homogeneous populations to determine which may be etiologic or most predictive for lys

Fixation in situis the most common method of management for different degrees of slip of the proximal capital femoral epiphysis. The aim of our study is to retrospectively analyze final results and complications after in situ pinning with Kirschner wires for stabile slipped capital femoral epiphysis. We retrospectively reviewed clinical records and radiographs of 61 children (17 girls and 33 boys) at the average age of 11.8 years. The average follow-up period was 7.4 years, minimum 3 years. In slips 300 and less (38 hips) vast majority of patients had very good and good subjective results (pai

A study was conducted to determine what effect pinning in situ for slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) had on the timing of subsequent closure of the growth plate. Eighty-nine patients with a SCFE were reviewed. Twenty-six patients with a unilateral SCFE were treated with closed pinning in situ; no manipulative reductions were performed. The timing of physeal closure was assessed using postoperative radiographs of both pinned and non-pinned sides. The average time until physeal closure was 12.0 months for the pinned physis and 22.2 months for the non-pinned physis. In two cases, the physe

Ninety six distal tibial epiphyseal fractures were identified and treated in our institution from 1976 to 1988. The average age was twelve years and eight months (range two to seventeen years), but seventy-one were between eleven and fourteen years old. Using the Salter-Harris classification we have found twelve type 1 tibial fractures, fourty-two type 2, thirty type 3 and twelve type 4. Four were triplane fractures and seven were Tillaux fractures. Twenty-six had injuries in the medial corner of the ankle mortise (Mac-Farland). Fifty patients were treated non-operatively with closed reduction

BACKGROUND: Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) requires surgical treatment when diagnosed. The surgical management of moderate to severe SCFE remains an area of controversy among pediatric orthopedic surgeons. The severity of slippage, the viability of the femoral epiphysis, and the method of surgical management determine the long-term clinical and radiographical outcome. This study sought to evaluate the mid-term results of subcapital realignment of chronic stable slipped femoral epiphysis with open physis using surgical hip dislocation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a prospect
