Visual placebo and nocebo effects.

Placebo and nocebo effects modulate symptom perception through expectations and learning processes in various domains. Predominantly, their impact has been investigated on pain and physical performance. However, the influence of placebos and nocebos on visual system functionality has yet to be explored. The present study aimed to test whether placebo and nocebo effects can intervene in altering participants' performance outcomes during a novel visual accuracy task and to examine the underlying neural mechanisms through EEG. After performing a baseline session, visual accuracy was said to be en

Pushing the P300-based brain-computer interface beyond 100 bpm: extending performance guided constraints into the temporal domain.

OBJECTIVE: A new presentation paradigm for the P300-based brain-computer interface (BCI) referred to as the 'asynchronous paradigm' (ASP) is introduced and studied. It is based on the principle of performance guided constraints (Townsend et al 2012 Neurosci. Lett. 531 63-8) extended from the spatial domain into the temporal domain. The traditional constraint of flashing targets in predefined constant epochs of time is eliminated and targets flash asynchronously with timing based instead on constraints intended to improve performance. APPROACH: We propose appropriate temporal constraints to de

Evaluation of the Effect of Modafinil on Cognitive Functions in Patients with Idiopathic Hypersomnia with P300.

BACKGROUND: Modafinil is a well-tolerated psychostimulant drug with low addictive potential that is used to treat patients with narcolepsy and other excessive sleepiness. Whereas favorable effects of modafinil on cognitive functions have been shown in a large number of studies, there are very few reports presenting the effects of modafinil electrophysiologically. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of modafinil on auditory P300 latency and amplitude electrophysiologically. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighteen patients (age range: 16-48 years) with a diagnosis of idiopathic hypersom

Neural correlates of decision making on a gambling task.

Individual differences in affective decision making were examined by recording event-related potentials (ERPs) while 74 typically developing 8-year-olds (38 boys, 36 girls) completed a 4-choice gambling task (Hungry Donkey Task; E. A. Crone & M. W. van der Molen, 2004). ERP results indicated: (a) a robust P300 component in response to feedback (punishment vs. reward outcomes), (b) anticipation effects (stimulus-preceding negativity) prior to outcomes presented on frequent (vs. infrequent) punishment choices, (c) anticipation effects prior to selections associated with short and long-term losse

The role of event-related potentials in subclinical cognitive dysfunction in essential tremor.

Several studies have reported that patients with essential tremor (ET) may also have mild cognitive impairment. Event-related potentials (ERPs) involve cognitive processes in the brain. No detailed investigation has been conducted into auditory ERPs (AERPs) to detect the subclinical cognitive dysfunction in patients with ET. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the usefulness of AERPs in ET-related cognitive impairment. The AERPs were obtained by using an oddball paradigm in 27 patients with ET and 27 age-matched control subjects. The mean latency and amplitude of the ERPs were compared betw

Endogenous event-related potentials in acupuncture clinical research: A critical narrative review.

Acupuncture lacks well-established electrophysiological indicators for objective efficacy evaluation. Endogenous event-related potentials (ERPs), with their millisecond temporal resolution, offer a unique window into the modulatory effects of acupuncture on cognitive and emotional processing. This review summarizes studies conducted over the past decade that have utilized endogenous components such as P300, mismatch negativity, and contingent negative variation to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture. It covers two major fields, cognitive disorders and neuropsychiatric diseases, and includes s

The Application of P300-Long-Latency Auditory-Evoked Potential in Parkinson Disease.

Introduction  Parkinson disease (PD) is a degenerative and progressive neurological disorder characterized by resting tremor, stiffness, bradykinesia, and postural instability. Despite the motor symptoms, PD patients also consistently show cognitive impairment or executive dysfunction. The auditory event-related potential P300 has been described as the best indicator of mental function, being highly dependent on cognitive skills, including attention and discrimination. Objective  To review the literature on the application and findings of P300 as an indicator of PD. Data Analysis  The samples

P300 in heavy social drinkers: the effect of lorazepam.

The P300 component of the event-related potential (ERP) and reaction time (RT) were recorded during a simulated driving task using an oddball paradigm. ERPs and RTs were recorded from heavy social drinkers (n = 11) and low social drinkers (n = 11). A pharmacological challenge (lorazepam-ATIVAN) was administered to both groups in a double-blind procedure. In both groups, P300 amplitude was reduced and RT was increased by the presence of lorazepam; however, heavy social drinkers had longer latency P300 than low social drinkers regardless of the drug condition. The P300 amplitude results are cons

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is associated with increased engagement of frontal brain regions across multiple event-related potentials.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric condition leading to significant distress and poor quality of life. Successful treatment of OCD is restricted by the limited knowledge about its pathophysiology. This study aimed to investigate the pathophysiology of OCD using electroencephalographic (EEG) event-related potentials (ERPs), elicited from multiple tasks to characterise disorder-related differences in underlying brain activity across multiple neural processes. METHODS: ERP data were obtained from 25 OCD patients and 27 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) by

Hostile attribution biases for relationally provocative situations and event-related potentials.

This exploratory study investigates how hostile attribution biases for relationally provocative situations may be related to neurocognitive processing using the P300 event-related potential. Participants were 112 (45 women) emerging adults enrolled in a large, public university in upstate New York. Participants completed self-report measures on relational aggression and hostile attribution biases and performed an auditory perseveration task to elicit the P300. It was found that hostile attribution biases for relational provocation situations was associated with a larger P300 amplitude above an

Deficits in facial emotional valence processing in older people with subjective memory complaints: Behavioral and electrophysiological evidence.

Subjective memory complaints (SMCs), which occur in the absence of clinical memory deficits, may precede mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer's disease (AD). Some studies have reported a deficit in facial emotion processing in people with MCI or AD. However, it is unclear whether this deficit is also present in older people with SMCs. The present study used behavioral measurements and event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate the facial emotion processing of 41 older people with SMCs and 38 without SMCs. The task contained 204 images displaying facial emotions (positive, negative,

Disentangling the effects of reward value and probability on anticipatory event-related potentials.

Optimal decision-making requires humans to predict the value and probability of prospective (rewarding) outcomes. The aim of the present study was to evaluate and dissociate the cortical mechanisms activated by information on an upcoming potentially rewarded target stimulus with varying probabilities. Electro-cortical activity was recorded during a cued Go/NoGo experiment, during which cue letters signaled upcoming target letters to which participants had to respond. The probability of target letter appearance after the cue letter and the amount of money that could be won for correct and fast

The Cortical Source of the P300 ERP Generator in the Associative Learning Task: A Consensus of Four Inversion Algorithms.

Background: Associative learning, the process of binding stimuli, responses, and outcomes, is critical for behavioral adaptation. While event-related potentials (ERPs) like the P300 effectively index the cognitive effort and context updating required during trial-and-error learning, the precise cortical generators of these signals and their shift across development remain difficult to isolate due to the electroencephalography (EEG) inverse problem. The aim of the study was to examine the differences in P300 localization depending on the associative learning task stage and participants' age. Me

The preattentive change detection in preschool children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a mismatch negativity study.

To investigate the preattentive change detection in preschool children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), we compared the mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a of event-related potentials (ERPs) between preschool ADHD and normal children using three-stimulus oddball paradigm. Analyzing MMN and P3a components, we found that MMN elicited by deviants and P3a elicited by novelty were significantly reduced in patients than in controls. In addition, the P3a amplitude was positive correlated to IQ and negatively correlated to hyperactivity, antagonistic defiance and conduct problems in

Effects of sensation seeking on habituation to novelty: An EEG study.

Sensation seeking is characterized by a strong need for novelty and has been associated with various risk-taking behaviors. Using the extreme between-group design, the current study investigated the electrophysiological mechanisms underlying habituation to novelty processing in sensation seeking. Twenty high sensation seekers (HSS) and 20 low sensation seekers (LSS) performed an auditory oddball task while their EEG was recorded. The results revealed that both the novelty P3 and midfrontal theta power decreased from the first to the second half for LSS but not for HSS. Additionally, this reduc
