Adenoviral Conjunctivitis in the Andaman Islands: A Clinical and Molecular Epidemiological Study.

Introduction Human adenoviruses are common causes of many acute illnesses, and keratoconjunctivitis is one of them. Acute infections, if left untreated, can progress to severity, thus causing morbidities and mortalities. It belongs to the mastadenovirus family and is characterized by seven subgenus, i.e., A-G; among those, Adenovirus D8 is the most common type associated with keratoconjunctivitis. Methodology A hospital-based study was conducted, and the samples were collected from GB Pant Hospital, Port Blair, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital, Port Blair, from August 2017 to December 2022. Clinical d

Bilateral Cytomegalovirus Retinitis With Co-infection of Epstein-Barr Virus and Varicella-Zoster Virus: A Rare Case.

Cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMVR) is a form of infectious uveitis, a disease characterized by inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye. It is caused by the cytomegalovirus (CMV). Although CMVR generally involves a single virus, rare cases have been reported in which multiple viral DNAs have been detected in intraocular fluid using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. The present case report documents a rare case of bilateral infectious uveitis with simultaneous detection of CMV and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in the right eye and CMV and varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in the left ey

Importance of reinfection in the pathogenesis of trachoma.

The authors' epidemiologic studies of trachoma on Taiwan and experimental monkey eye infections with and without Chlamydia trachomatis immunization are reviewed for the data they provide on the pathogenesis of trachoma. These studies indicate that trachoma is an immunopathologic disease in which the more severe progressive trachoma infections with pannus and scar formation occur only after reinfection. This hypothesis is supported by a 10-year study of 32 family households that were followed with repeated clinical and laboratory observations. Although most cases of active trachoma healed spont…

Differential diagnosis of retinitis and choroiditis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are at high risk for developing retinitis. The most common forms of retinitis in such patients are those caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Toxoplasma; however, retinitis or choroiditis can also be caused by other viral, protozoal, bacterial, and fungal agents. Differential diagnosis of these infections is based on a number of factors, including ophthalmoscopic appearance, underlying disease, clinical history, and severity of underlying immunosuppression. Rapid and accurate diagnosis is essential in preserving functional vision, as some

Ocular delayed hypersensitivity: a pathogenetic mechanism of chlamydial-conjunctivitis in guinea pigs.

We used a naturally occurring, Chlamydia psittaci-caused eye disease in guinea pigs, guinea pig inclusion conjunctivitis, as an animal model to understand both the immune response and the pathogenesis of chlamydial eye infections. When instilled into the conjunctival sac of guinea pigs that had been previously infected and were immune, viable chlamydiae or a Triton X-100-soluble extract of them produced a short-lived (12-48 hr) eye disease indistinguishable clinically and histologically from that observed during primary chlamydial eye infection. The clinical and histologic findings were consis…

Bacterial Spectrum and Antimicrobial Resistance Patterns of External Ocular Infections Among Patients Attending Dilla University General Hospital Ophthalmic Clinic, Southern Ethiopia.

Health professionals in ophthalmic clinics prescribe broad-spectrum topical antibiotics empirically, a major contributing factor to antimicrobial resistance. This practice is also observed in our study area. Thus, this study was done to identify the bacterial spectrum, determine antimicrobial resistance, and identify factors of external eye infections. A cross-sectional study was done from May to December 2023 with a systematic random sampling technique. The study participants' data were collected using a semistructured questionnaire. The specimen was taken aseptically and processed using stan…

COVID-19 and Other Pandemics: How Might They Be Prevented?

Pandemics such as influenza, smallpox, and plague have caused the loss of hundreds of millions of lives and have occurred for many centuries. Fortunately, they have been largely eliminated by the use of vaccinations and drugs. More recently, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), and now Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) have arisen, and given the current absence of highly effective approved vaccines or drugs, brute-force approaches involving physical barriers are being used to counter virus spread. A major basis for physical protection from respir

[Role of toxoplasmas in pathology of the vision organ].

The present paper presents data on the major clinical symptoms ofToxoplasma oculopathy in different forms of Toxoplasma infection. It also gives the results of the authors' own laboratory studies of specimens taken from individuals with pathology of the vision organ. They confirm the data available in the literature on that toxoplasmosis frequently occurs in combination with other infections, particularly with Herpes and Cytomegalovirus, Chlamydia, Ureaplasma, and Mycoplasma infections. The signs of eye lesions and a clinical case of an eleven-year-old girl diagnosed as having central recurren

Interventions for the management of CMV-associated anterior segment inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a virus that usually affects people with reduced immunity. In recent years, this virus has been thought to cause repeated inflammation in the eye, in otherwise healthy people. This form of inflammation can cause damage to the cornea (the outer layer of the eye) or to the optic nerve by causing secondary glaucoma, or to both, leading to visual loss. OBJECTIVES: Our primary objective was to assess the effects of drug therapies for the treatment of CMV-associated anterior segment inflammation. Our secondary objective was to determine the optimal dose and durat

[Endophthalmitis as the first clinical manifestation of infectious endocarditis].

Infectious endocarditis is considered one of the most severe infections in the Western world. Complications include septic embolism, for example to the brain or the eye. Endogeneous endophthalmitis is a rare but severe eye disease. It is important to remember that clinical signs from the eye can be the first manifestation of systemic disease. We present a case report of an 81-year-old woman with endogenous endophthalmitis as the first clinical manifestation of infectious endocarditis.
