Mandibular symmetry on posterior-anterior cephalograms of neurofibromatosis type 1 patients with facial plexiform neurofibroma.

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an is an autosomal dominant heritable tumor predisposition syndrome.. Peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNST) are a hallmark of NF1. Plexiform neurofibromas (PNF) are neoplasms that are characteristic of NF1, often causing disfiguring effects (e.g., on the face), and are considered precancerous lesions. Previous studies have shown that facial PNF (FPNF) have an impact on the shape of facial bones. This study examines deviations of mandibular symmetry from cephalometric reference planes considering the topography of FPNF. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The

Association between genetically determined telomere length and health-related outcomes: A systematic review and meta-analysis of Mendelian randomization studies.

Emerging evidence has shown that leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is associated with various health-related outcomes, while the causality of these associations remains unclear. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of current evidence from Mendelian randomization (MR) studies on the association between LTL and health-related outcomes. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science up to April 2022 to identify eligible MR studies. We graded the evidence level of each MR association based on the results of the main analysis and four sensitive MR methods, MR-Egger, weighted median, MR

Clinical assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with unilateral sinonasal disease.

OBJECTIVES: Unilateral sinonasal disease is commonly encountered in practice and represents an issue of major concern since neoplasms may mimic inflammatory conditions. This paper aims to describe the demographic, clinical and radiological patterns of unilateral pathologies and, accordingly, to establish a guiding algorithm for diagnosis and management. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of medical records of patients with unilateral sinus opacification on CT scan who underwent endoscopic nasal surgery in our department from January 2011 to December 2017. RESULTS: Of t

Expression of the adenocarcinoma-related antigen recognized by monoclonal antibody 44-3A6 in salivary gland neoplasias.

The monoclonal antibody 44-3A6 detects a cell-surface protein that has been shown to be a useful marker in distinguishing adenocarcinomas from other histologic tumor types in a variety of tissues. The objective of this study was to determine whether 44-3A6 could be used as a tool in the classification of salivary gland neoplasms. These complex tumors share overlapping pathologic features but distinct clinical outcomes. This study used 44-3A6 to immunohistochemically describe the pattern and frequency of this antigen in salivary gland neoplasms. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections

Glioblastoma of the cerebellopontine angle and internal auditory canal mimicking a peripheral nerve sheath tumor: case report.

Glioblastoma (GBM) of the internal auditory canal (IAC) is exceedingly rare, with only 3 prior cases reported in the literature. The authors present the fourth case of cerebellopontine angle (CPA) and IAC GBM, and the first in which the lesion mimicked a vestibular schwannoma (VS) early in its natural history. A 55-year-old man presented with tinnitus, hearing loss, and imbalance. MRI identified a left IAC/CPA lesion measuring 8 mm, most consistent with a benign VS. Over the subsequent 4 months he developed facial weakness. The tumor grew remarkably to 24 mm and surgery was recommended; the ma

First report of a clinical and radiologic response to vorasidenib in a patient with isocitrate dehydrogenase-mutant brainstem astrocytoma.

BACKGROUND: IDH (isocitrate dehydrogenase)-mutant gliomas of the brainstem are exceedingly rare. In the INDIGO trial, patients with brainstem gliomas were excluded, thus, no data exists on the use of vorasidenib in this group. CASE SUMMARY: We describe the case of a 20-year-old female who developed progressive left facial myokymia and binocular horizontal diplopia on leftward gaze over two years. Brain MRI demonstrated a non-enhancing, expansile T2/FLAIR hyperintense lesion in the left greater than right brainstem extending from the dorsal pons into the cervicomedullary junction. Facial palsy from temporal bone lesions.

INTRODUCTION: Facial nerve palsy results in the loss of facial expression and is most commonly caused by a benign self-limiting inflammatory condition, known as Bell's palsy. However, there are other conditions which may result in injury of the seventh cranial nerve and the radiologist should be familiar with their imaging appearances. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The relevant anatomy of the facial nerve and pathology which may affect the intratemporal portion of the nerve is described. The role of imaging and choice of imaging modality is also reviewed. RESULTS: High-resolution computer tomograph

Pediatric parotid mucoepidermoid carcinoma: a case report.

Salivary gland neoplasms are rare, comprising less than 5% of pediatric head and neck tumors, with mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) being the most common malignant type. MEC in the parotid gland is exceedingly rare in children. Histologically, MEC tumors consist of squamous cells, mucus-secreting cells, and lymphoid infiltration, reflecting their complex cellular composition. This case report presents a 9-year-old female with a one-year history of progressive, painless swelling in the left cheek, accompanied by facial nerve palsy. Imaging studies revealed a heterogeneously enhancing mass in the

Multimodal Imaging and Clinical Implications of Collagenous Fibroma in the Juxtaforaminal Premaxillary Fat Pad Mimicking Locoregional Tumor Recurrence: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Collagenous fibroma (CF), or desmoplastic fibroblastoma, is a rare benign tumor with few reported cases involving the facial region. Its presence in uncommon sites can pose diagnostic challenges due to overlapping clinical and radiologic features with malignant neoplasms. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, we report a case of a 48-year-old female with CF in the juxtaforaminal premaxillary fat pad, presenting with neuralgic pain extending to the ipsilateral upper gingiva. The patient had a history of adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) of the right nasolabial fold, which was treated surgically

Hyperandrogenism after menopause: diagnostic evaluation.

Excessive androgen levels in women after menopause often result from an imbalance in ovarian steroid secretion: a rapid decline in estrogen secretion associated with a slow decrease in androgen secretion, compounded by a physiological decrease in sex hormone-binding globulin. Hyperandrogenism is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular events and gynecological neoplasms, also impacting the emotional well-being of affected women. Therefore, the aim of these guidelines is to guide the clinical physician in the appropriate clinical and biochemical evaluation of hyperandrogenism after menop

Bilateral cochlear implantation in a young patient with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP-D) and progressive sensorineural hearing loss-How to do it?

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), a rare genetic skin condition, causes ultraviolet (UV)-induced neoplasms and possible neurological deficits including sensorineural hearingloss. We present the first case in literature of bilateral cochlear implantation (CI) in a patient with XP-D with neurodegeneration. Multi-disciplinary team members (national XP team, dermatologist, anaesthetist, theatre team, biophysicists) were involved. UV exposure from equipment and areas where the 14-year-old patient would track was measured. Maximum possible surgery was performed under operating headlights to limit higher-U

Use of an Ultrasonic Aspirator in Removal of an Orbital Rim Hemangioma.

Intraosseous hemangiomas are rare bony neoplasms that infrequently develop in the calvarium or facial bones. Due to their highly vascular nature, biopsy or resection of these tumors can present a surgical challenge, with reports of significant blood loss during tumor resection. Traditional surgical resection of intraosseous hemangiomas often includes the use of high speed oscillating or sagittal saws. Ultrasonic aspirators, which spare adjacent soft-tissue structures and minimize blood loss, have been successfully used in resection of firm soft tissue masses of the orbit; however, this technol

Partial parotidectomy via periauricular incision: Retrospective cohort study and comparative analysis to alternative incisional approaches.

BACKGROUND: We investigated a periauricular approach to the parotid and compared outcomes to alternative parotidectomy incisions. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of patients (n = 97) undergoing partial parotidectomy for benign or malignant pathology by a single surgeon. After October 2017, most patients were approached via a periauricular incision (n = 59). RESULTS: There was no significant difference in patient age, tumor location, length of hospital stay, postoperative complication, or pathology. Mean tumor diameter was significantly smaller in the periauricular group (2.1 cm) than in

Acute Parotitis: A Rare Complication of Fine Needle Aspiration in Warthin Tumour.

UNLABELLED: Salivary gland tumours are a group of neoplasms with considerable heterogeneity regarding their histology and biological behaviour. Warthin tumour (WT) is the second most common benign parotid tumour. Options for tissue diagnosis include fine needle aspiration (FNA) and ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy. Complications related to FNA are rare. We present the case of a 49-year-old man admitted with parotitis after FNA and discuss management and an alternative investigative approach when WT is strongly suspected. LEARNING POINTS: Warthin tumour (WT) can be clinically suspected bas

Surgical treatment of salivary malignant tumors.

Salivary gland malignant tumors (SGMT) are of key interest for head and neck surgeons since surgery with adjuvant radiotherapy is considered the treatment of choice in most of the cases. Some factors, namely rarity, high histologic heterogeneity, and possible occurrence in all the head and neck subsites, contribute to make this topic very controversial; some unclear aspects pertain surgical treatment. When dealing with major salivary gland malignant tumors (MaSGMT), the most debated issues remain the extent of surgery and management of facial nerve. In minor salivary gland malignant tumors (Mi

NK cell lymphoblastic lymphoma in the masticator space: a case of non-Hodgkin lymphoma with challenging maxillofacial manifestation and immunophenotype.

Clinical and pathologic findings in extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) often raise challenging problems in diagnosis. We demonstrate the first established case of lymphoma with precursor natural killer (NK) cell origin in the oral and maxillofacial region. An 81-year-old Japanese man had an enlarged facial mass mainly in the parotid region but hyposensitivity in the affected side of the mental and lingual region, and diagnostic imaging revealed the origin to be in the masticator space and indicated an advanced-stage lymphoma. The tumor cell immunophenotype was CD56(+)CD3(-)CD4(-), with no B
