Effects of transcranial electrical stimulation on face identification and related perceptual processes: a systematic review.

Face identification is a core capacity underpinning effective social interaction and communication. Although a growing body of literature has examined the effects of transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) on face identification, findings remain fragmented and lack an integrative synthesis. This systematic review adopted a broad scope, encompassing all published studies on TES and face identification, with the aim of mapping methodological trends and substantive findings, rather than focusing on a specific subtype of intervention or population. We conducted a PRISMA-guided systematic review

Hemispheric asymmetries in face recognition in health and dysfunction.

A defining characteristic of the human brain is that, notwithstanding the clear anatomic similarities, the two cerebral hemispheres have several different functional superiorities. The focus of this chapter is on the hemispheric asymmetry associated with the function of face identity processing, a finely tuned and expert behavior for almost all humans that is acquired incidentally from birth and continues to be refined through early adulthood. The first section lays out the well-accepted doctrine that face perception is a product of the right hemisphere, a finding based on longstanding behavio

Effect of Action Units, Viewpoint and Immersion on Emotion Recognition Using Dynamic Virtual Faces.

Facial affect recognition is a critical skill in human interactions that is often impaired in psychiatric disorders. To address this challenge, tests have been developed to measure and train this skill. Recently, virtual human (VH) and virtual reality (VR) technologies have emerged as novel tools for this purpose. This study investigates the unique contributions of different factors in the communication and perception of emotions conveyed by VHs. Specifically, it examines the effects of the use of action units (AUs) in virtual faces, the positioning of the VH (frontal or mid-profile), and the

Face-name memory in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) affects face-name memory, the ability to recognize faces and recall names. Remembering face and name requires a sophisticated cognitive process because of the complexity and similarity among faces and also because of their arbitrary association with names. Assessments of face-name memory can measure episodic and semantic memory performance and are useful for early detection of AD. Improving face-name memory is possible through cognitive interventions targeted to promote procedural memory, which is often preserved until the late stage of AD. This article describes a con

Impact of mask-wearing on emotion recognition accuracy and fixation duration in young children.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding how children recognize facial emotions is essential for explaining the development of social communication. During the COVID-19 pandemic, widespread mask-wearing partially occluded facial expressions, potentially influencing children's emotion recognition processes. METHODS: This study investigated age-related differences in emotion recognition accuracy and gaze fixation patterns in young children using eye-tracking technology. Participants included 36 three-year-olds and 45 five-year-olds. Children viewed facial expressions representing four emotions (joy, sadness

Socioeconomic status impacts metacognition of working memory and emotion recognition.

Socioeconomic status (SES) affects a wide range of cognitive functions. Still, its influence on metacognition, a second-order, integrative, and regulatory cognitive process, remains unknown. We compared low and high SES adults' performance in metacognition, a function critical for adaptation through the monitoring of mental and cognitive content to adjust behavior. In Study I, participants performed a working memory task and rated the task difficulty; based on the difference between the two measures, we calculated a metacognitive index (MI). In Study II, we used a facial emotion recognition ta

Aging alters face expressions processing and recognition: insights on possible neural mechanisms.

The present work investigated how aging influences the different stages of face expression processing: fixation patterns, early perception, face motor response, and recognition. Thirty-four participants (17 young, 17 senior) were subjected to 1) recording of fixation patterns, 2) recording of the P100 and the N170 components of event-related potentials, 3) excitability of short intracortical inhibition (SICI) and intracortical facilitation (ICF) of the face primary motor cortex (face M1), and 4) recognition task during the passive viewing of neutral, happy, and sad faces expressions. Joint encoding of facial identity, orientation, gaze, and expression in the middle dorsal face area.

The last two decades have established that a network of face-selective areas in the temporal lobe of macaque monkeys supports the visual processing of faces. Each area within the network contains a large fraction of face-selective cells. And each area encodes facial identity and head orientation differently. A recent brain-imaging study discovered an area outside of this network selective for naturalistic facial motion, the middle dorsal (MD) face area. This finding offers the opportunity to determine whether coding principles revealed inside the core network would generalize to face areas out

The effects of hippocampal dentate gyrus lesions on categorical face perception.

Traditionally considered a memory structure, the hippocampus may contribute to visual perception in fundamental ways. Recent evidence suggests that the ability to differentiate highly confusable unfamiliar faces could involve pattern separation, a mnemonic process mediated by the hippocampal dentate gyrus. Hippocampal involvement, however, may be influenced by existing face memories. We tested BL, an individual with rare selective bilateral dentate gyrus lesions accompanied by compromised pattern separation, and 34 control participants to investigate these possibilities. Participants were admi

Perceptual asymmetry during free viewing of words and faces: The effect of context on recognition.

There is ample evidence supporting the dissociation between the role of the left and right cerebral hemispheres in processing words and faces, respectively. Nevertheless, research has not yet studied the effect of perceptual asymmetry in memory context effect tasks using words and faces. Thus, the present study researches the advantages of presenting information in the right versus left hemispace and the effect of context on recognition when using faces compared to words presented in the right versus left hemispace. Participants (n=60) were assigned either to the group presented with pairs of

Emotional expression in psychiatric conditions: New technology for clinicians.

AIM: Emotional expressions are one of the most widely studied topics in neuroscience, from both clinical and non-clinical perspectives. Atypical emotional expressions are seen in various psychiatric conditions, including schizophrenia, depression, and autism spectrum conditions. Understanding the basics of emotional expressions and recognition can be crucial for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Emotions can be expressed in the face, gesture, posture, voice, and behavior and affect physiological parameters, such as the heart rate or body temperature. With modern technology, clinicians can

Domain-general object recognition predicts human ability to tell real from AI-generated faces.

Faces created by artificial intelligence (AI) are now considered indistinguishable from real faces. Still, humans vary in their ability to detect these faces-a skill so novel it would have been useless a few years ago. We show that some individuals are consistently better at discriminating real from AI-generated faces. We used latent variable modeling to test whether this ability can be predicted by a domain-general ability, called o, which is measured as the shared variance between perceptual and memory judgments of both novel and familiar objects. We show that o predicts detection of AI-gene

The anterior fusiform gyrus: The ghost in the cortical face machine.

Face-selective regions in the human ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC) have been defined for decades mainly with functional magnetic resonance imaging. This face-selective VOTC network is traditionally divided in a posterior 'core' system thought to subtend face perception, and regions of the anterior temporal lobe as a semantic memory component of an extended general system. In between these two putative systems lies the anterior fusiform gyrus and surrounding sulci, affected by magnetic susceptibility artifacts. Here we suggest that this methodological gap overlaps with and contributes

Rapid neural categorization of angry and fearful faces is specifically impaired in boys with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Difficulties with facial expression processing may be associated with the characteristic social impairments in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Emotional face processing in ASD has been investigated in an abundance of behavioral and EEG studies, yielding, however, mixed and inconsistent results. METHODS: We combined fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS) with EEG to assess the neural sensitivity to implicitly detect briefly presented facial expressions among a stream of neutral faces, in 23 boys with ASD and 23 matched typically developing (TD) boys. Neutral faces

Social-emotion recognition in borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by interpersonal disturbances, but the neurocognitive aspects of these symptoms are poorly understood. We hypothesized that patients with BPD have impaired perception of emotional expressions, which are related to symptoms of interpersonal dysfunction. To control potential confounding factors, this study excluded subjects with comorbid diagnoses known to be associated with impaired affect perception. We tested 43 outpatients with BPD and 26 healthy controls on emotion recognition tasks (facial, prosodic, and integrated facial/prosodic), no

High-level attentional selection results in repulsive biases in face space.

Object-based attention enhances processing of attended relative to unattended objects across categories, but how selection functions within a category, where visual features are similar and confusable, remains less well understood. For simple, low-level features, research has shown that attention can bias similar representations away from each other to exaggerate perceptual differences. We investigated how attention operates when selecting visually similar objects from the same category-a face among other similar faces. Participants performed visual search to identify a unique target face amon

Brain leakage exposes covert cognitive computations in bodily movements.

Brain and body are fundamentally intertwined. A recent study from Cazettes et al. reveals how latent decision variables in the mouse brain can be read out from facial expressions. This shows how covert cognitive computations 'leak' into the periphery, and opens new opportunities for tracking cognitive processes through bodily measurements.

Effects of early institutionalization on emotion processing in 12-year-old youth.

We examined facial emotion recognition in 12-year-olds in a longitudinally followed sample of children with and without exposure to early life psychosocial deprivation (institutional care). Half of the institutionally reared children were randomized into foster care homes during the first years of life. Facial emotion recognition was examined in a behavioral task using morphed images. This same task had been administered when children were 8 years old. Neutral facial expressions were morphed with happy, sad, angry, and fearful emotional facial expressions, and children were asked to identify t

Investigating the role of the fusiform face area and occipital face area using multifocal transcranial direct current stimulation.

The functional role of the occipital face area (OFA) and the fusiform face area (FFA) in face recognition is inconclusive to date. While some research has shown that the OFA and FFA are involved in early (i.e., featural processing) and late (i.e., holistic processing) stages of face recognition respectively, other research suggests that both regions are involved in both early and late stages of face recognition. Thus, the current study aims to further examine the role of the OFA and the FFA using multifocal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). In Experiment 1, we used computer-gener

Facial features of lysosomal storage disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The use of facial recognition technology has diversified the diagnostic toolbelt for clinicians and researchers for the accurate diagnoses of patients with rare and challenging disorders. Specific identifiers in patient images can be grouped using artificial intelligence to allow the recognition of diseases and syndromes with similar features. Lysosomal storage disorders are rare, and some have prominent and unique features that may be used to train the accuracy of facial recognition software algorithms. Noteworthy features of lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) include facial fea…
