Bedding materials and early infant wheezing: A randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Various observational studies have suggested that infants and young children who regularly sleep in synthetic bedding materials are more likely to experience wheezing and asthma, while children who use feather duvets and/or feather pillows are less likely to wheeze. METHODS: In Wellington, New Zealand, we conducted a three-armed, parallel, randomised trial of 460 infants who were assigned to use different bedding materials: synthetic, wool or feather bedding in the form of sleepsacks from 3 months of age to 2 years of age to test the hypothesis that children exposed to feather mat

Geolocator-tracking seabird migration and moult reveal large-scale, temperature-driven isoscapes in the NE Atlantic.

RATIONALE: By combining precision satellite-tracking with blood sampling, seabirds can be used to validate marine carbon and nitrogen isoscapes, but it is unclear whether a comparable approach using low-precision light-level geolocators (GLS) and feather sampling can be similarly effective. METHODS: Here we used GLS to identify wintering areas of northern gannets (Morus bassanus) and sampled winter grown feathers (confirmed from image analysis of non-breeding birds) to test for spatial gradients in δ13 C and δ15 N in the NE Atlantic. RESULTS: By matching winter-grown feathers with the non-br…

Modification of an intrauterine shunt catheter to reduce the incidence of spontaneous displacement.

OBJECTIVE: To determine which of four types of catheters would be the least likely to become displaced spontaneously when employed as a fetoamniotic shunt, by testing the force required to remove the catheters from a lamb's bladder. METHODS: The catheter designs tested were unfeathered straight, unfeathered pig-tailed, superficially feathered, and deeply feathered. The catheters were placed percutaneously into the urinary bladders of recently euthanized newborn lambs. The force required to withdraw the catheters was determined, employing nine measurements for each catheter design. RESULTS: T

Density and group size effects on caged hens of two genetic stocks differing in escape and avoidance behavior.

Hens of two moderately inbred White Leghorn stocks, known to differ significantly in escape and avoidance behavior, were compared for productivity traits, nervousness, and feather loss when housed four or eight per cage at densities of 348 (high), 464 (medium), and 580 (low) cm2/bird. Differences were found between stocks in sexual maturity, egg production traits, body weights, nervousness, and feather loss. The more nervous strain lost more feathers. Highest density housing depressed performance and increased nervousness and feather loss, but differences were generally lacking between the med…

Mercury and growth of tree swallows at Acadia National Park, and at Orono, Maine, USA.

In 1997 and 1998 we weighed nestling tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) and measured selected body components at two colonies: Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island, and at Orono, ME. We used differences in mean growth variables among individual nestlings to evaluate differences between colonies, years, and amount of total mercury (THg) in carcasses and methyl mercury (MeHg) in feathers. We marked nestlings on the day hatched and measured body components every day in 1997 and every other day in 1998 until nestlings fledged. We calculated linear growth rates and asymptotic means as appropr…

[Sensitization in budgerigar owners].

In a prospective study 258 adults were investigated for sensitisation against bird antigens (budgerigar, canary, pigeon) using intracutaneous test. 18 of 78 budgerigar keepers were sensitised against budgerigar feathers. 30 (38%) showed a positive skin reaction at least with one of the three extracts tested. In none bird exposed persons a sensitisation was found in 18/96 (19%) against budgerigar and in 24/96 (25%) against at least one of the three allergen extracts. Late reactions occurred in 5/70 (7%) budgerigar keepers, 4/5 with pigeon feathers. The frequency of sensitisation against budgeri…

An experimental test of the site specificity of preening to control lice in feral pigeons.

Site specificities of ectoparasites on the host may have evolved due to the selective pressure exerted by host grooming. The present study demonstrates that the efficiency of avian preening varies among sites on the host. The study relies on the simple idea that the effectiveness of preening behavior to control lice can be quantified by the removal rate of dead lice glued onto the feathers of living birds. Two treatments were done to document site-specific differences in the efficiency of preening for louse control. The first treatment showed that lice disappear from the underwing covert feath…

Effects of Dietary Sterol-Rich Yeast Hydrolysate on Serum Lipid Indices, Intestinal Morphology, Digestive Enzyme Activities, Barrier-Related Gene Expression, and Cecal Microbiota in Yellow-Feathered Broiler Breeder Hens.

This study evaluated dietary sterol-rich yeast hydrolysate (SYH) at 0, 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8 g/kg in 720 yellow-feathered broiler breeder hens for 6 weeks. The tested SYH, supplied as a powder, contained 9.24% mannan, 3.1% total sterols, 2.0% amino nitrogen, and 3.64 g/kg nucleotides. Serum lipoproteins, intestinal morphology, digestive enzyme activities, barrier-related gene expression, and cecal microbiota were assessed. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was higher in J-C than in Control, J-A, and J-B, whereas high-density lipoprotein cholesterol did not differ among treatments. Duodenal lipas

The potential of supplementing compound organic trace elements at lower levels in Chinese yellow- feathered broiler diets, part II: Impacts on growth performance, gut health, intestinal microbiota, and fecal mineral excretion.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of reducing inorganic trace minerals (ITM) by supplementing compound organic trace minerals (OTM) chelates on growth performance, fecal mineral excretion, intestinal health, and cecal microbiota of yellow-feathered broilers. A total of 960 one day old male broilers were randomly assigned to 6 treatments, among which birds were fed with the basal diets (negative control, NC), or supplemented with 1,000 mg/kg (positive control, PC), 300, and 500 mg/kg ITM or OTM, respectively. Dietary supplementation of OTM significantly increased the average daily gai

Lactic-fermented red onion (Allium cepa L.) extract in drinking water improves feed efficiency, selectively modulates cecal microbiota, and reduces ammonia emission in heat-stressed yellow-feather chickens.

Heat stress is a major constraint to sustainable poultry production in tropical regions. This study evaluated the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum 1582-fermented red onion bulb extract (LFRO), supplied through drinking water, on growth performance, cecal microbiota, and excreta gas emissions in heat-stressed yellow-feather chickens. A total of 300 one-day-old male Rilai chicks were assigned to four treatments in a completely randomized design with five replicate pens of 15 birds each: unsupplemented control or LFRO at 25, 50, or 100 mg/L in drinking water. Effects of Dietary Sterol-Enriched Yeast Hydrolysate on Ovarian Development, Reproductive Endocrine Status, Immune-Inflammatory Responses, Antioxidant Indices, and Egg Quality in Late-Laying Yellow-Feathered Broiler Breeder Hens.

This study evaluated graded dietary supplementation with sterol-enriched yeast hydrolysate (SYH) in late-laying yellow-feathered broiler breeder hens. A total of 720 55-week-old hens received 0, 0.2, 0.5, or 0.8 g/kg of SYH for six weeks after a one-week adaptation period. SYH is a composite product containing sterols, mannan, nucleotides, and amino nitrogen; therefore, the observed effects cannot be attributed to sterols alone. Eggshell strength increased at 0.5 and 0.8 g/kg, whereas fertility and hatchability were unaffected. The 0.5 g/kg group showed the highest ovarian index values and the

Soft-tissue and dermal arrangement in the wing of an Early Cretaceous bird: Implications for the evolution of avian flight.

Despite a wealth of fossils of Mesozoic birds revealing evidence of plumage and other soft-tissue structures, the epidermal and dermal anatomy of their wing's patagia remain largely unknown. We describe a distal forelimb of an enantiornithine bird from the Lower Cretaceous limestones of Las Hoyas, Spain, which reveals the overall morphology of the integument of the wing and other connective structures associated with the insertion of flight feathers. The integumentary anatomy, and myological and arthrological organization of the new fossil is remarkably similar to that of modern birds, in whic…

Accumulate or eliminate? Seasonal mercury dynamics in albatrosses, the most contaminated family of birds.

Albatrosses (Diomedeidae) are iconic pelagic seabirds whose life-history traits (longevity, high trophic position) put them at risk of high levels of exposure to methylmercury (MeHg), a powerful neurotoxin that threatens humans and wildlife. Here, we report total Hg (THg) concentrations in body feathers from 516 individual albatrosses from 35 populations, including all 20 taxa breeding in the Southern Ocean. Our key finding is that albatrosses constitute the family of birds with the highest levels of contamination by Hg, with mean feather THg concentrations in different populations ranging fro…

Topographical mapping of α- and β-keratins on developing chicken skin integuments: Functional interaction and evolutionary perspectives.

Avian integumentary organs include feathers, scales, claws, and beaks. They cover the body surface and play various functions to help adapt birds to diverse environments. These keratinized structures are mainly composed of corneous materials made of α-keratins, which exist in all vertebrates, and β-keratins, which only exist in birds and reptiles. Here, members of the keratin gene families were used to study how gene family evolution contributes to novelty and adaptation, focusing on tissue morphogenesis. Using chicken as a model, we applied RNA-seq and in situ hybridization to map α- and β-ke…

Reconstructing avian mercury concentrations through time using museum specimens from New York State.

We examined how variation in MeHg concentrations through time is reflected in birds, a taxon commonly used as a biological indicator of ecosystem health. Using museum specimens collected from 1880 to 2016, we measured feather MeHg concentrations in six species of birds that breed in New York State and have distinct dietary and habitat preferences. We predicted that MeHg concentrations in feathers would mirror Hg emission patterns in New York State and increase through time until 1980 then decrease thereafter in response to increased regulation of anthropogenic Hg emissions. We found that MeHg …

Allergens causing bird fancier's asthma.

The study investigates to what extent bird feathers contain relevant allergens/antigens involved in bird fancier's asthma. The study group consisted of two budgerigar fanciers, two parrot fanciers and one canary fancier. All subjects complained of asthmatic symptoms, caused by contact with their birds, and they showed a significant bronchial hyperreactivity to acetylcholine. Positive IgE antibody reactions to bird sera as well as to extracts of feathers were observed in RAST. Well-defined major allergenic bands could be detected and identified in the IgE immunoblots with feather extracts as we…
